[mostly completed] Server maintenance August 30

**Update 21:00 CEST:** all services that had their home on this host have been moved and launched. ![](https://discuss.tchncs.de/pictrs/image/d222be64-4f3c-4f16-84d2-eb84e4d459eb.png) **Update 20:30 CEST:** the linux container was launched on the new host. It is possible that some of you still cache the old IP address. Please be patient. **** **tl;dr** Surprise maintenance! It looks like it is once again time for some fresh hardware. Within the next hours (perhaps also tomorrow, depending on time among other things), you might experience a downtime of up to one to two hours due to Lemmy being moved to a new machine. This is needed for more future proofing as well as making sure the current hardware is not about to die and forcing us to apply a backup. **This post will be updated as soon as there are any updates.** Old specs (about € 37.72 /month): * i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz * 2x512 GB KXG50ZNV512G TOSHIBA Gen 3 in Software Raid * 4x RAM 16384 MB DDR4 * 🇫🇮 Expected new specs (€ 76,16 € /month): * Ryzen 7 7700 * 2x1 TB SAMSUNG MZVL21T0HCLR-00B00 (not that i was given a choice) Gen 4 in Software Raid * 64 GB RAM * 🇩🇪 (they would be few eur cheaper in helsinki but AX52 are out of stock) *Additional costs are involved – **if in your budget** and if you want to support this instance, feel welcome to donate at https://tchncs.de/donate :)* **** Right now. both of the servers drives report 255% used. I have already received this machine in the unluckly state of equally (and much) used NVMe's... and there is some promising `iowait` going on, making me worry. It's not just the very unfortunate and (as i had to learn by actually losing drives upon reboot) dangerous state of the drives, but also the fact that the i7-7700 seems a bit overwhelmed with the load from Lemmy and Firefish. Another thing I am not (yet) sure about is whether the 64G memory are actually sufficient... ```` Total virtual memory: 61.74% - 38.6 GiB of 62.6 GiB RAM: 61.74% - 38.6 GiB of 62.6 GiB Committed: 65.29% - 40.9 GiB of 62.6 GiB virtual memory Commit Limit: 50.00% - 31.3 GiB of 62.6 GiB virtual memory Shared memory: 17.05% - 10.7 GiB of 62.6 GiB RAM Page tables: 3.15% - 1.97 GiB of 62.6 GiB RAM Disk Writeback: <0.01% - 2.42 MiB of 62.6 GiB RAM RAM available: 20.10% free - 12.6 GiB of 62.6 GiB Hardware Corrupted: 0% - 0 B of 62.6 GiB RAM ```` This is fine'ish but not sure for how long. Maybe for now I wait with upgrading the memory... – on the other hand... why not give some room for even more database tweaking perhaps?

I need to correct my previous statement: watching it for a bit longer and even trying to optimize things, it looks like hosting Lemmy on that i7 7700 machine can't continue for much longer. I am still trying to figure out whether I can improve things, but it is quite possible that there will be an announcement for moving this instance to a new host soonish.

Having an eye on it... from time to time the monitoring cries too - for me it is often hard to distinguish between a possible server problem or a starlink hickup... as of for right now, i couldn't spot obvious load issues but i have increased some things under the hood in the hope that maybe already helps. :)

    Potential decline of tchncs donations

Well hello there, I hope you are having a good time and that apart from the shaky recent update, discuss.tchncs.de serves you well! 🚀 > ### tl;dr > tchncs is doing wonderfully in terms of donations, but I have reason to worry about an ongoing decline. Please don't feel pressured but if some of you would help looking out that it doesn't fall below a certain threshold, that'd be amazing. :) Many of you are already using tchncs services elsewhere, but for those of you who are new, I'd like to briefly mention that this service is powered by donations of its users. By donating a small monthly fee, you ensure that I will be able to keep paying for the infrastructure and its upgrades, as well as investing my time, trying to keep the thing rolling. Donating is 100% voluntary and not each and every one of you need to do it – **also for now, there is no critical need for new donors.** ### If that's the case, why am I even pointing this out? For a couple of months, our dear Elon (and later /u/spez) gave us not only waves of new users, but also motivated them / existing users to boost donations quite a bit. **In fact, it is kinda unreal how much you kind people have donated to tchncs over the time.** The server-costs have increased and unlikely will go down soon again. Even tho it happened before, **the past month was quite weak compared to the previous trend.** Of course it is still much more than ~~many~~ most fediverse admins sadly have to deal with(!), but **also this month started weaker than usual** and I worry that this time it might become a new trend. At [tchncs.de/donate](https://tchncs.de/donate), I give you (maybe too) deep insights about the tchncs funding situation. Here you have what I just wrote as a screenshot: ::: spoiler 🖼 **very bright for darktheme screenshot of the previous months in donations** 🖼 ![Donation vs expense screenshot from july 12, 2024](https://discuss.tchncs.de/pictrs/image/d47e10f6-04d0-49b3-b35e-60ac48844503.jpeg) *Screenshot from july 12, 2024* ::: There is also tracked workhours on the site and together they even form dynamic goals with some hacky bash scripts. 😁 ### So what do I ask for?! If, and **only if** you can afford it and if you really want to, please consider checking from time to time as to whether tchncs currently achieves goal #1 and ideally goal #2 (hw upgrades). It is important to keep a buffer for new hardware. And if not needed for new hardware, you are helping your fellow admin (me) with day to day expenses and ideally, savings for bad times. *...so that's all, this got longer than anticipated, sorry for that. Please do not feel pressured, as of now it's all fine. Just trying to make sure it stays this way. ✌*

    [✔ DONE] Database maintenance / Lemmy update – june 10 @ 18h CEST

Normally I do not shut down services in order to perform updates, but [the new Lemmy release](https://join-lemmy.org/news/2024-06-07_-_Lemmy_Release_v0.19.4_-_Image_Proxying_and_Federation_improvements) requires a newer version of the PostgreSQL database server, which in turn requires a migration of the very cluster. If nothing special is hindering it (this happened with the Synapse Matrix server recently), this will be done quite quickly by just linking to the newer Postgres version (this is a feature of Postgres itself), otherwise it might take an hour or two. This will also affect the Firefish microblogging instance under https://procial.tchncs.de

Adjustments and updates are planned to the pict-rs instance (this is the software Lemmy uses in the background for handling media). I will need to stop it for a few minutes. Lemmy itself is expected to run without any interruption – without the media tho. 😉 Don't worry, if everything goes to plan, it will be done very swiftly. 🚀

As far as I know, they struggle with available hardware resources right now – althrough I am not sure if thats still the case... .

Edit: if I am watching the (known federation) problem correctly, it could also be "bad" not to regularely restart the instance – if thats true... well... maybe I should restart the thing too so others read us 😅

it appears that it was a mix of two issues... one was a problem introduced by a change on the webserver that i didn't expect to be related, then lemmy threw a 400 until it was restarted (so this is likely related to the federation issue). well then... at least this part is somewhat fixed.

Crossgeposted von: https://lemmy.ml/post/9347983 > ## What is Lemmy? > > Lemmy is a self-hosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top. > > ## Major Changes > > This release is very large with [almost 400 commits since 0.18.5](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/compare/0.18.5...main). As such we can only give a general overview of the major changes in this post, and without going into detail. For more information, read the full changelog and linked issues at the bottom of this post. > > ### Improved Post Ranking > > There is a new [scaled sort](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3907) which takes into account the number of active users in a community, and boosts posts from less-active communities to the top. Additionally there is a new [controversial sort](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3205) which brings posts and comments to the top that have similar amounts of upvotes and downvotes. Lemmy's sorts are detailed [here](https://join-lemmy.org/docs/users/03-votes-and-ranking.html). > > ### Instance Blocks for Users > > Users can now [block instances](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3869). Similar to community blocks, it means that any posts from communities which are hosted on that instance are hidden. However the block doesn't affect users from the blocked instance, their posts and comments can still be seen normally in other communities. > > ### Two-Factor-Auth Rework > > Previously 2FA was enabled in a single step which made it easy to lock yourself out. This is now fixed by [using a two-step process](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3959), where the secret is generated first, and then 2FA is enabled by entering a valid 2FA token. It also fixes the problem where 2FA can be disabled without passing any 2FA token. As part of this change, 2FA is disabled for all users. This allows users who are locked out to get into their account again. > > ### New Federation Queue > > Outgoing federation actions are processed through a [new persistent queue](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3605). This means that actions don't get lost if Lemmy is restarted. It is also much more performant, with separate senders for each target instance. This avoids problems when instances are unreachable. Additionally it supports horizontal scaling across different servers. The endpoint `/api/v3/federated_instances` contains [details about federation state](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/4104) of each remote instance. > > ### Remote Follow > > Another new feature is [support for remote follow](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/pull/1875). When browsing another instance where you don't have an account, you can click the subscribe button and enter the domain of your home instance in the popup dialog. It will automatically redirect you to your home instance where it fetches the community and presents a subscribe button. [Here is a video showing how it works](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/pull/1875#issuecomment-1727790414). > > ### Authentication via Header or Cookie > > Previous Lemmy versions used to send authentication tokens as part of the parameters. This was a leftover from websocket, which doesn't have any separate fields for this purpose. Now that we are using HTTP, [authentication can finally be passed via `jwt` cookie or via header](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3725) `Authorization: Bearer <jwt>`. The old authentication method is not supported anymore to simplify maintenance. A major benefit of this change is that Lemmy can now send cache-control headers depending on authentication state. API responses with login have `cache-control: private`, those without have `cache-control: public, max-age=60`. This means that [responses can be cached in Nginx](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ansible/issues/195) which reduces server load. > > ### Moderation > > Reports are now [resolved automatically](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3871) when the associated post/comment is marked as deleted. This reduces the amount of work for moderators. There is a new [log for image uploads](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3927) which stores uploader. For now it is used to delete all user uploads when an account is purged. Later the list can be used for other purposes and made available through the API. > > ### Cursor based pagination > > `0.19` adds support for [cursor based pagination](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3872) on the `/api/v3/post/list` endpoint. This is more efficient for the database. Instead of a query parameter `?page=3`, listing responses now include a field `"next_page": "Pa46c"` which needs to be passed as `?page_cursor=Pa46c`. The existing pagination method is still supported for backwards compatibility, but will be removed in the next version. > > ### User data export/import > > Users can now [export their data](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3976) (community follows, blocklists, profile settings), and import it again on another instance. This can be used for account migrations and also as a form of backup. The export format is designed to remain unchanged for a long time. You can make regular exports, and if the instance becomes unavailable, register a new account and import the data. This way you can continue using Lemmy seamlessly. > > ### Time zone handling > > Lemmy didn't have any support for timezones, which led to bugs when federating with other platforms. This is now [fixed by using UTC timezone for all timestamps](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3496). > > ### ARM64 Support > > Thanks to help from @raskyld and @kroese, there are now offical Lemmy releases for ARM64 available. > > ### Activity now includes voters > > - Previously, site and community activity counts were only based on people who commented, or posted. [Those counts now include anyone who voted on a comment or post as well.](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/4235) Thanks to @Ategon for this change. > > ## Upgrade instructions > > Follow the upgrade instructions for [ansible](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ansible#upgrading) or [docker](https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/administration/install_docker.html#updating). The upgrade should take less than 30 minutes. > > If you need help with the upgrade, you can ask in our [support forum](https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy_support) or on the [Matrix Chat](https://matrix.to/#/!OwmdVYiZSXrXbtCNLw:matrix.org). > > Pict-rs 0.5 is also close to releasing. The upgrade takes a while due to a database migration, so read the [migration guide](https://git.asonix.dog/asonix/pict-rs#user-content-04-to-05-migration-guide) to speed it up. Note that Lemmy 0.19 still works perfectly with pict-rs 0.4. > > ## Thanks to everyone > > We'd like to thank our many contributors and users of Lemmy for coding, translating, testing, and helping find and fix bugs. We're glad many people find it useful and enjoyable enough to contribute. > > ## Support development > > We (@dessalines and @nutomic) have been working full-time on Lemmy for over three years. Welcome, to the new Mobilizon instance of tchncs events.tchncs.de

[Mobilizon](https://joinmobilizon.org/) is federated software in the same network as Lemmy (but with some intentional restrictions*), **to help you organize your online or offline events!** The instance is now slowly opening its doors. For now, logins are restricted to our accountsystem at auth.tchncs.de but this might relax once a few things have been figured out. At the end of january 2024, i might evaluate whether people are actually using that instance and if it makes sense to keep it online. \* you may only follow groups, not individual accounts

    [Matrix] outgoing federation repaired

As of deep last light (cest), the error was identified and tchncs started to inform other servers about the events they were missing out on. It wasn't processing one of the outgoing queues correctly due to a well hidden typo in a configfile – causing one of the federation senders not identifying itself correctly. You may run into a few recent messages that can't be decrypted, but otherwise everything federation related should be back to normal. Sorry about this mess and thanks to everybody who has helped in identifying the issue.

[Matrix server] Upcoming maintenance and backup restore July 31

Well hello again, I have just learned that the host that recently had both nvme drives fail upon drive replacement, now has new problems: the filesystem report permanent data errors affecting the database of both, Matrix server and Telegram bridge. I have just rented a new machine and am about to restore the database snapshot of the 26. of july, just in case. All the troubleshooting the recent days was very exhausting, however, i will try to do or at least prepare this within the upcoming hours. ![](https://discuss.tchncs.de/pictrs/image/7bb1c76e-94df-4c77-9195-1e1ae38833c8.png) ### Update After a rescan the errors have gone away, however the drives logged errors too. It's now the question as to whether the data integrety should be trusted. ### Status august 1st Well ... good question... optimizations have been made last night, the restore was successful and ... we are back to debugging outgoing federation :( **** The new hardware also will be a bit more powerful... and yes, i have not forgotten that i wanted to update that database. It's just that i was busy debugging federation problems. ### References * federation issues after restore: https://github.com/matrix-org/synapse/issues/16025 * why we had to restore initially: https://text.tchncs.de/tchncs/about-the-matrix-incident-on-july-26-2023

Hey there, many of you worried after recent registration bot waves on other instances and now after the temp captcha removal for this Lemmy release. It was fine until now, but it looks like the bored kids with their bots have now found this server. Approval of new signups is now required again. Especially sad as this does not scale well.

This has [many disadvantages](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/2841#issuecomment-1535469357), like making the code harder to maintain, and causing live updates to the site which many users dislike. Most importantly, it requires keeping a connection open between server and client at all times, which causes increased load and makes scaling difficult. That's why we decided to rip out websocket entirely, and switch to HTTP instead. This change was made much more urgent by the sudden influx of new users. [@CannotSleep420](https://lemmygrad.ml/u/CannotSleep420) and [@dessalines](https://lemmy.ml/u/dessalines) have been working hard for the past weeks to implement this change in lemmy-ui. > > HTTP on its own is already more lightweight than websocket. Additionally it also allows for caching of server responses which can decrease load on the database. Here is an [experimental nginx config](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ansible/pull/75) which enables response caching. Note that Lemmy doesn't send any cache-control headers yet, so there is a chance that private data gets cached and served to other users.

-> **[Community Beta Release & Alpha Migration Trail Guide](https://community.anytype.io/t/community-beta-release-alpha-migration-trail-guide/9463)**

[Done(?)] Scheduled maintenance for moar hp

    ##### Hello there friendly users! **Update 3:50pm CEST** The container has been moved, most work on the new host has been completed. There are some permanent data errors on the original storage pool, but it does not like it affected this linux container. Please give DNS and federation a moment. **** Some (but only a few) of you have experienced an outage today around 5-8am CEST. This – as far as my current findings go – happened due to a filesystem panic. So far, i only experienced such a thing on virtual servers with a certain amount of load. Even tho relatively speaking, i didn't feel like there was much to worry about with the current setup and its utilization, i feel like when looking at a potential second wave from Reddit, this instance should be prepared – so i just did a thing: ##### What we are moving to We will be moving from a `Netcup RS 4000 G9.5` KVM with 32 GB memory and 10 dedicated EPYC cores, *(that was meant for various smaller tchncs services such as XMPP, Email, Clouds, Websites and stuff and lots of headroom)*, to a Hetzner serverauction baremetal thing with an `Intel Core i7-7700`, `2x SSD M.2 NVMe 512 GB`, `64 GB DDR4 Mem`, `1 Gbit Networking` in Finland. ##### I plan to migrate today as soon as the thing is ready and configured. There will be a downtime of up to 1 hour. Lemmy will share its seat on the machine with the tiny Calckey instance that was deployed around the same time. Increased monthly cost: around 40 EUR **** **Note on the thing Meta is developing with ActivityPub federation support:** I am not a friend of Meta and am happy to keep it out of my life an off of my servers. However there are lots of rumors and barely any confirmed informations around the project. I will act accordingly once more is known. I also won't make any exceptions in terms of enforcing our rules. However i won't participate in signature lists for pre-blocking everything Meta and run around in circles, screaming in panic.

[Feedback requested after:] Quick media maintenance

**Update June 11:** (local) media is now being cached by the webserver. This is important to keep the costs low after migrating to object storage. Lemmy implements media in an uncommon way and i had to adapt. If you spot weird behavior for (local) media, please drop a comment. **Update June 10:** to keep costs low, the new media location needs caching. This is currently being worked on and may or may not result in a few seconds of unavailable media. **** ##### Original post: It is time to migrate the media over to object storage and yes, i suppose i should have done this in the beginning. 😇 This will take a few minutes while the underlaying mediaserver needs to be down. :) ~~Refreshing the page is not recommended 😅~~

lemmy.ml is overloaded, asks users to join other instances instead https://discuss.tchncs.de/post/5232

I’ll tweak a thing or two today to ensure the current machine will be able to handle that ever growing wave, as not only the known network grows, the line of people trying to join the instance keeps growing as well (welcome!). A few seconds of downtime are to be expected as changes require very short restarts of services. Don’t worry this is expected to be so quick, most of you won’t even notice.

Howto: show bigger version of media

Since it took me a second as well, i thought, i'd better share this with you: If you want to see a bigger version of an image, you don't need to open the thread (in fact it wouldn't even help). Just click on the small tile with the image and a bigger version will appear.

    Removed custom logo

...because I find that it can be confusing... if you search for your Lemmy browsertab, I assume, you'll look for that mouse, not for the tchncs logo. 🐭 Feel free to add your opinion on this. (if you still see the tchncs logo in the navbar, refresh the page)

Howto: subscribe to new remote communities

Oh noes, that short community list 😱 – but hey, some have been shown to the instance already! 🎊 *An instance needs to learn the network either organically from interactions or by getting pointed to nice places of the fediverse.* #### Finding a community You might have seen [the instancelist](https://join-lemmy.org/instances) already. You can view their communities and subscribe to them from tchncs. Also check out [browse.feddit.de](https://browse.feddit.de/) for finding all teh nice communities across instances. #### Syntax The syntax for a community is `!community`. The syntax for a remote community is `!community@server.xyz` The searchbox also understands full links like `https://lemmy.ml/c/unixporn` #### Show this server a community: > **Note:** make sure you are searching the fediverse. Do not filter for local, which might be your default! 1. Go to the **search** and look up a remote community that you either found on the network or simply guessed. 2. The server will now try to subscribe to it **in the background** 3. After a while the ui will refresh and show the community as a search result. This might take a few seconds. (otherwise see below). 4. If you want to make sure, **just search again after a few seconds** or check the community-list and you should find what you were looking for. #### If it's stuck at pending There currently are many discussions around this. Right not it seems like it still works, even tho it says pending.

Vote for new tchncs services! cloud.tchncs.de

    #### About the vote Since a little while, you can vote for and suggest, what could be next for tchncs.de – use this thread to discuss suggestions or just use the Nextcloud poll in the link. :) Most services will be tried without full commitment within the first while, because it is often unclear how well they scale, can be moderated or will be used. However i am not good at not continuing things... need to improve on that front. #### What you can do here Find the missing link, but also discuss certain software before voting or maybe for giving your vote (or submission) more weight – or just use it as a forum to find cool stuff. #### What we are testing now - **[Calckey](//procial.tchncs.de)** *(intended for production)* - **[Lemmy](//discuss.tchncs.de)** *(intended for production)* - **[Vikunja](//todo.tchncs.de)** - **[OpenTalk](//tchncs.de/opentalk)** *(now in production)* - **[Bookwyrm](//tomes.tchncs.de)** *(now in production)* #### Considered for testing someday soon - Mobilizon *(currently lower prio)*

Welcome to Lemmy, hosted at tchncs.de

Feel welcome to use this post for testing purposes, **feedback** on the instance and to say hi! Since the playground model wasn't really that good (it prevents users from making things their home), I've decided not to announce this instance to be in playground/testing mode. Instead, i'll simply try to make it work and hope that it won't become an administrative nightmare. ***However – things are looking quite good so far.*** In the background i am currently trying to determine whether the current location is powerful enough midterm, if not, there will be a quick and quiet maintenance to move the thing to a more fitting place (looking at the potential upcoming wave from Reddit). Also there are some smaller things in the background still being worked on, but they shouldn't affect users. **tl;dr have fun, if everything goes well, this will be a permanent place for people to enjoy – i hope. 🚀** Also check out https://join-lemmy.org/apps for apps and stuff.
