homeassistant homeassistant Why is Home Assistant an operating system and not an application installable through distro packages?
Jump
  • mhzawadi mhzawadi 2 days ago 92%

Home Assistant has a lot of moving parts, all the add-ons and extra user stuff. So they provide a docker image with everything you need, they also provide a full appliance install for easy setup.

If you did all that as a package install, you would complain about all the dependancies and if you didnt install the right version of something Home Assistant might not work at all

maybe its just me, but self hosting is more about learning to run and then simplify my setup. Thats why I read the documentation for the project I want to deploy, then see if I have anything that looks similar. But as I've been doing self hosting for almost 20 years, plus working at a SaaS company. I have done a lot of things with a lot of different tech

All my docker stuff has a very common look to it, also I have tried a lot of stuff. See my Git repo with some examples -> https://github.com/mhzawadi/docker-stash

  • mhzawadi mhzawadi 2 months ago 100%

I leave my servers running 24/7, thats the point of a server. Also my home automation would be a little pointless if its off.

I did have a UPS, but it died and I have got round to replacing it.

Its all horses for courses, if your homelab is a playground to test things out then turning it off when not is use is fine. But some have live services that you may want at a moments notice and there for having it up all the time is better.

    Jump
  • mhzawadi mhzawadi 3 months ago 100%

I use swarm in my home lab, I don't have any docker things at work so Kubernetes is way more then I want to manage.

All my stacks are in a git repo, I have an ansible playbook to update them if needed. I also have most things tracked on new releases (https://newreleases.io/) so I know when something needs an update, then I can either update the git repo by hand or use ansible.

Also have a look at docker contexts, you can manage your swarm from a remote location.
