Yes, that is absolutely insane, I agree, and I am not trying to justify his actions. I just wanted to point out that it's not like some kids walked up to the door and got shot they were in fact trespassing, so the headline is a bit misleading.

I am not justifying the guy's actions in any way, but the article says the teens hopped the fence and walked around the property looking for the homeowner. I can certainly understand why the woman would feel threatened. It's not an excuse for anybody to just start shooting, but this feels like an extremely dumb decision on the boys' part.

Probably Call of Juarez: The Cartel. I wanted to play the entire franchise back to back, but it wasn't being sold on Steam, so I had to hunt down a copy on some key reseller. Boy, do I see why it's not on sale anymore. runs like absolute shit, incredibly buggy, cheesy as hell and with some pretty questionable game design choices. Still, it was somewhat entertaining in a "so bad it's good" sense, and it ties into the previous games in a fairly interesting way, so I don't regret playing it. It was certainly an experience, but it's a very bad game by pretty much all metrics.

The map looks and feels amazing, one of my favourite worlds in a game, and the main story missions are really, really good

    BUT

To unlock said story missions you have to do multiple hours of open world tasks, most of which consist of going to an area and mindlessly killing everybody. If you enjoy grinding, you will probably like it, I have a friend who does, but I couldn't bring myself to finish it because I found unlocking the story missions mind-numbing.

"watch the ficus" - telling somebody to be more careful after they do something clumsy like tripping or nearly dropping something. I used it in front of some friends once and got confused looks. Apparently grandma used to have a potted ficus tree and used to tell me to watch it when I was playing close to it, so it stuck as a saying in the family.

Hmm, I do have tap to wake and that is giving me an idea. You can pull down the status bar while the phone is locked and in the bottom right corner there's a power button. So theoretically my leg can double tap the screen, pull down the status bar, tap the power button and confirm. Feels like a bit of a stretch but who knows. I've never had it randomly turn off while I was using it or while sitting on my desk after all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, I'd say 4 is about right. And the power button is a bit recessed (it doubles as the fingerprint reader), so it's really hard to press it accidentally. I genuinely have no idea how it could randomly turn off in my pocket. As for the battery, I'm pretty confident it's a software issue. It's only happened twice in the 4 months I've owned the phone and a restart fixed it both times.

Keep in mind that my basis for comparison is a Galaxy S9. The Fairphone feels smoother and more responsive most of the time, but you do occasionally get freezes and lag spikes, mostly when you try to minimise an app that is currently loading something from my experience. Particularly heavy websites also slow it down sometimes, but pretty rarely.

And I wouldn't really call the design "that bad", I was listing off my issues with it, so it might have come across that way, but the majority of the time it works completely fine.

I have a Fairphone 5 and it's... ok. It's definitely overpriced for its specs but you can't really expect a cheap phone while cutting down on slave labour at the same time. It's also quite buggy. Not unusably so, but coming from a Galaxy S9 (yes, Samsung bad, that's why I switched), it's a bit jarring. For example, sometimes I'll pull it out of my pocket and it's mysteriously off. I turn it back on and there doesn't appear to be a reason for it and it works fine. A few times I've had the battery drain insanely fast for some reason, despite the phone reporting no apps having high battery usage. Some apps also have issues on occasion, Discord for example tends to get stuck in the gallery view after you send a picture and it doesn't allow you to open the keyboard again. It's also missing some minor, but neat things, like the ability to snooze alarms by turning over the phone (Edit: tbh that's probably a stock Android thing and not really fair to hold against the phone, but I still miss it) and the fingerprint reader is nowhere near as reliable as the one in my old phone.

The vast majority of the time it works just fine and if you don't expect the polish you'll get out of a Samsung flagship, you'll probably be ok with it. But you are very much paying a premium for the sustainability and repairability, not the overall experience. I don't regret supporting Fairphone, vote with your wallet and all that, but I definitely recognise the device itself has issues and when looked at purely on specs and software quality, it isn't really worth the money.

Should I get this bent wheel repaired?

So, a few months ago I ran into a pothole and got a bubble on my tyre. It was almost time to switch to winter tyres so I kept driving for a few more weeks with no issues, put winters on and that was that. Today I went to get the summers installed and replace the one with the bubble and the mechanic pointed out that I also bent the rim on that pothole. I hadn't noticed the damage, nor any vibrations and it's still holding air perfectly. It's now mounted in the rear, where it will hopefully be under less stress (I drive a Yaris). I can get a new wheel, but not for the next few weeks and I do need to drive in the meantime, so my question is, should I bother getting this wheel repaired? The damage doesn't seem big and from what I've heard straightening aluminium wheels sometimes leads to cracks, which will just make the situation worse than it already is. I'd rather have a wheel that's probably usable than one that definitely isn't. Edit: I should point out, the winter tyres are on a different set of rims. I've only driven on this wheel for about 2 weeks, from when I hit the pothole until I had the winter tyres installed. Today I had it put back on the car and the mechanic pointed out the damage to me. ![](https://midwest.social/pictrs/image/3a01dbb6-f387-4ff7-b566-bee6ad243ac8.jpeg) ![](https://midwest.social/pictrs/image/144ab30a-e0ef-4997-b539-43da12ad7282.jpeg) ![](https://midwest.social/pictrs/image/082adbbf-e6e5-4c49-9732-d64dabbc150b.jpeg)

I'm still in the beginning of my programming career (maybe also the end, looking at how AI is going, lmao) and at my previous job I had fuckall to do. I spent nearly a year without a project, working basically 30 minutes a day. I quit mainly because I was afraid that when I change jobs I will have say 5 years experience on paper, but the knowledge for 1, because I've barely done anything.

Work isn't always about money, you also want to learn stuff so you can make even more money in the future. You can't really do that if you get paid to watch Youtube all day.

The map and gameplay of WD2 are great, but I absolutely hated the story-gameplay dissonance. "Oh, we are just a bunch of nice, happy hacker kids, we want to get more social media followers... Let's murder half of the San Francisco police force and literally thousands of criminals". I am aware the game has non-lethal options, but they make playing much more of a slog and unlike WD1, this game does nothing to encourage using them. Ubisoft removed the morality system because everybody hated it in the first game, but ironically it would have fit much better in WD2 imo.

    GZCLP questions

So I'm pretty new to the gym and on my second week of GZCLP. I'm curious what the reasoning is for no AMRAP set in the tier 2 exercises. I was under the impression muscles grow more when pushed close to failure, so why wouldn't you want to do that in the low weight/high rep sets? Also on a slightly related note: can I do the tiers out of order? If for example the squat rack is taken, can I do my tier 2 bench press first and my tier 1 squats afterwards or is that not recommended for some reason?

    I've been enjoying exercise recently.

I'm 25 and I've never really exercised much. I've tried jogging, cycling, etc but always bounced off after two or three weeks. While not fat or anything I was definitely way out of shape Half a year ago I moved into an apartment building right next to a gym and in December I decided to start going to it. It was a struggle, but I tried to be consistent over the last 3 months Anyway, yesterday I was about to begin a new training program and realised that I was actually looking forward to going to the gym. After hating most forms of exercise for 20-something years I finally *wanted* to work out. I'm lowkey proud of myself

Heat: Pedal to the Metal is great fun

Got the game a couple of days ago and so far we've had 4 sessions with 2-3 players. I know racing board games are generally kinda bad but we've been having a blast with this one. It's a hand management game, which means it's not quite as random as something with dice rolls like Formula D, while still having some unpredictability. It's relatively easy to learn and pretty intuitive once you've played a few rounds. There are also some very simple, but effective bot mechanics, so you can have a great game with only two players or even solo. It's also really pretty and incredibly thematic. Everything is based on 60s Formula 1, which the F1 fan in me loves.

    • RDR2, a game the online mode of which got abandoned two years in because it wasn’t making as much money as GTA5 nominated for Labour of Love.

Can I replace only one tire if the other 3 aren't very worn?

For context, I drive a Toyota Yaris on 17 inch wheels. I hit a pothole and got a bubble on my front right tire (the pain of running low profile tires). Anyway, I bough these tires something like 6 months ago and only have 5000-ish kilometers on them. The other 3 still look in perfect condition. I know it's normally recommended to replace tires in pairs, but is that really needed here considering how new the set is? Feels stupid to replace a tire that is practically new.

Yeah, you got into Hirata Estate. That's a semi-optional area that's a bit too hard for when you first gain access to it. It's really the game's fault for giving you the bell thingy so early imo.

I definitely recommend giving the game another go. Don't get me wrong, you will die a lot even when you follow the main path like you are supposed to, but the game is a bit more fair with the difficulty curve. Except for the Chained Ogre, that guy is just bullshit.

Lady Butterfly? She's technically an optional boss and really meant to be fought a bit later. She's an absolute pushover once you have some upgrades and actually know what you are doing, but if you are just starting the game she is way too difficult. It's honestly kinda stupid that you are allowed to access her so early.

The actual first boss is Gyoubu, the guy with the horse. While also difficult for first timers, he's much more doable than Lady Butterfly.

Just finished Red Dead Redemption 1 and Undead Nightmare on PC using the Xenia emulator

It’s a great game and I’m so glad I finally got to play it. I’m running a RTX 2070 Super and a Ryzen 5 3600 with 32 gigs of RAM. Using Xenia-Canary I could run the game at 1080p with decent framerate, but that caused some really unpleasant brightness issues at night, so I stuck with 720p and honestly stopped noticing the low resolution after a while. The game ran at a stable 60 all the way to the end and I encountered absolutely no issues besides some flickering shadows once or twice. If you have a decent gaming PC and have never played the original RDR I strongly recommend you try this. It can be a bit of a faff to find what emulator settings work for you, but once you get it working properly, it’s an absolute blast. RDR still holds up really well in my opinion.
