They hope to incentivise customers to use intel foundries by splitting them off. Intel compete with AMD and nvidia in many segments, so neither of these companies would want to manufacture their products at intel. But turning their foundries into a separate company could maybe change that (probably not). Their foundries also bleed money like crazy, separating them could stabilize share prices for the 'main' intel brand.

But snaps do have shared dependencies to a degree. Also, do you use gentoo?
ichbinjasokreativ 6 days ago • 100%
I disagree. Native packages are still a bit more hassle-free, but snaps have gotten really good by now. And you can do some things that debs can't, like setting up an entire nextcloud installation with a four-words-long terminal command.

edit: despite what people will say, ubuntu is still a rock solid distro. Alternatively, tumbleweed is brilliant too.

Ubuntu has zero telemetry if you flick the switch they show you right after installation. And steam is proprietary software, yet basically every distro ships it in their repos. Your points make no sense.

what do you mean modding was only possible on windows? I assume that you don't mean the skyrim approach of just downloading and unpacking, which has always worked under linux too. As do tools like mod organizer.

Good, but as pointed out by another user, you might need to reconfigure grub after deleting the windows partition. Or save your files on an external media and reinstall debian over the entire disk if you don't want to mess around.

No internet or cloud connections are required or used to save and analyze snapshots. Your snapshots aren't sent to Microsoft. Recall AI processing occurs locally, and your snapshots are securely stored on your local device only.
That's better than I thought. For the moment.
ichbinjasokreativ 4 weeks ago • 100%
It can, but that's not what I meant. When booting linux, do you see the blue windows menu where you can decide between debian and windows or does linux just start? If it just starts, you can just delete the windows partition (make sure to check that all important data has been copied to linux or you will loose it!). If unsure which partition it is, it's the one with ntfs as the file system.
ichbinjasokreativ 4 weeks ago • 100%
You could use GUI partitioning tools to just remove the windows partition and expand your debian installation. Did you install an extra bootloader for linux?

Did they make hard commitments to 100% keep the data local and never use it to spy on you? What does their privacy policy say? Come on dude, we're talking about microsoft. You're more likely to receive millions from a nigerian prince than to get some privacy from them.

Carbon credits were the biggest climate scam ever invented. Corporations either emit carbon or they don't. This whole concept of 'corporation A could've produced 1 million cons of carbon but didn't, so now corporation B pays them a few millions and gets to emit that same amout while claiming to be "carbon neutral"' needs to stop, it's too ripe for abuse.

It used to be a major pro-AMD reason for me too, but it's become irrelevant since pluton. Weird thing is, pluton was announced with much fanfare for Ryzen 6000, but I've not heard about it since.
Edit: I just read up on this topic again and found out that both purism and system76 disable the Intel ME in all their products (don't know if all of it is disabled, since it normally controls a lot of necessary components)
Edit 2: they can either remove most of its code from the flash, or use a disabling system that Intel had literally developed for the NSA.

Difference is that Intel's Management engine can be controlled via the network whereas AMD's platform security processor is local-only.
The much bigger problem is Microsoft's Pluton coprocessor, which they plan on making mandatory for using windows in the future.

Nothing. My car has AC and I can buy cold water anywhere. There's an umbrella in my car though.
Bought this kingston xs2000 a while ago. It's officially rated for "up to" 2000Mb\s read\write but slows to a crawl after 30GB have been copied. Fyi, I'm copying files from an internal nvme (samsung 980 pro) via a usb 3.0 cable, so this kingston ssd is the only bottleneck.
I opened my laptop for unrelated reasons and was greeted by a slightly bloated battery. Idk if the picture makes it clear, but the individual segments of the battery have slightly raised above the solid structure pieces in between. Laptop is just over a year old. I have already contacted the manufacturer, but with the holidays and everything I'm not sure when I'll get an answer. Basically, I'm worried about the potential danger. I use my laptop a lot (usually plugged in). Since the battery seems to be screwed in and not glued, I could just take it out, but idk if that would be better than just leaving it in until the manufacturer sends me a new one or has me send it in for battery replacement. Also, I hope that consumer hardware posts like this are accepted in this community. The rules at least don't state otherwise. Edit: thank you all for your comments. I brought the bloated battery to a recycling center the day after I made this post. Communication with Medion support eventually led to me talking to a very pleasant service technician on the phone. He sent me a new battery, which I just installed. Everything is working great again.
"The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) has introduced the FISA Reform and Reauthorization Act of 2023–an absolutely awful bill that ignores years of abuse and unconstitutional surveillance in order to renew a mass surveillance law with no real changes, reforms, or new oversight. Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is set to expire on December 31, 2023, and there is currently a race to see what bill will renew Big Brother’s favorite surveillance law. Any reauthorizations must come with significant reforms in order to protect the privacy of people’s communications. To that end, the choice is clear - we urge all Members to vote NO on the Intelligence Committee’s bill, H.R.6611, the FISA Reform and Reauthorization Act of 2023."
Hi everybody, bit of a warning here: The recovery key generated during the installation of Ubuntu 23.10 (if you select tpm-backed fde) cannot be used to unlock the disk outside of boot, as in any 'cryptsetup' command and so on will not accept the recovery key. unlocking when accessed from different system does not work etc. You can use it to unlock the disk while booting if your tpm somehow fails, but ONLY in that specific situation. I kind of purposefully broke my tpm keys to see if it could be restored with 23.10 and ended up having to reinstal, as I ended up having to enter the recovery key at boot every time and no way of adding additional unlock options to the volume, as cryptsetup would not accept the recovery key as passphrase. This bug could be very bad for new users. See this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-desktop-installer/+bug/2039741
Because my NAS isn't used while I'm at work, I set up a systemd service that reliably suspends the OS to memory at the same time every day (excluding weekends), and uses rtcwake to then wake it up again just before I typically get home from work. I also have an alias set up on my laptop to send a magic packet to the NAS in case I get home earlier etc. The issue is, that while the nas wakes up automatically, it does not wake up if I send a magic packet. In the BIOS of my MSI motherboard, I can change who handles wake events from OS to BIOS and doing so fixes my magic packet issues, but it also causes the systemd service to no longer wake the nas. WakeOnLAN is enabled in the network card, the network card is bridged ( I use the 'real' mac for WoL though). I got it to work while my nas ran ubuntu on different hardware (Biostar motherboard), but I'm a bit confused as to why I can no longer make it work. any ideas? Edit: I fixed it. On my specific MSI motherboard, wake event handling needs to be set to BIOS controlled, then wake on pcie needs to be enabled and wake on rtc needs to be disabled (!). This way, I guess, the BIOS does not take control over the rtc alarm, allowing the OS to write to it instead. Wake On LAN is still handled by the BIOS though, as it should be. I also realize that this was an MSI-related topic, not so much OpenSUSE, but I'd ask the mods to keep this post around in case anybody else ever stumbles across it.
Hi everybody, I recently installed OpenSuse Leap, but I have trouble working with firewalld. The goal is to accept incoming ssh and vnc connections from two IPs exclusively, but it just does'nt work. I removed all interfaces from zone public, set the internal zone up so that it has only the two IPs as sources and only the ssh and vnc services, but I still get asked for password when I try to ssh into the machine from an IP that is not listed. Any hints? firewall-cmd --get-active-zones returns this: docker interfaces: docker0 internal sources: 192.168.0.3/24 192.168.0.2/24 firewall-cmd --zone=internal --list-all returns this: internal (active) target: default icmp-block-inversion: no interfaces: sources: 192.168.0.3/24 192.168.0.2/24 services: ssh vnc-server ports: 22/tcp 5900/tcp 5901/tcp protocols: forward: no masquerade: no forward-ports: source-ports: icmp-blocks: rich rules: edit: Even with this configuration here, incoming ssh connections from an unlisted address still ask for password: firewall-cmd --get-active-zones docker interfaces: docker0 drop interfaces: eth0 br0 internal sources: 192.168.0.3/24 192.168.0.2/24
I currently have a personal nas running ubuntu server, but I'm considering moving it to opensuse leap. I've dabbled a bit with leap inside of virtual machines, but maybe someone more experienced with it can give me a more complete opinion. Also, is btrfs worth getting into, or can I just use ext4 and loose out on nothing (except snapshots)?
