I’m pretty sure that at the time that photo was taken he was in the middle of running for political office and hiding the fact his money came from drug trafficking. I assume that look you described was exactly what he was going for.

Nice work! I tried this out a few months ago (maybe longer?) and it was still a bit too rough around the edges but I liked the concept. I’ll download it again today and give the new update a spin!

It’s funny reading these mundane “the service was great, good steak” kind of review and knowing it’s written by a billionaire drug kingpin 😂

I watch a variety of tech and programming related YouTube channels and I’ve never once cared what the presenter looks like. I wouldn’t worry about it.
Your personality is way more important and that will matter the same whether you’re showing your real face or a VTuber avatar… arguably it’s even more important for a VTuber since you have to convey that personality without your normal facial movements and body language.
So I’m not saying you shouldn’t do the VTube thing if you want to do it, but if the main reason is that you’re worried about being out of shape I can tell you 100% it doesn’t matter. The content will speak for itself if it’s good.

Yeah that makes sense, that’s right about when they started teaching English in schools from grade school on. That’s why everyone under 40 tends to speak great English but over 40 and it’s hit or miss.

Yeah in my experience pretty much everyone under the age of around 40 in any major city speaks English there. Cities like Berlin sometimes it seems like half the people there don’t even speak German haha

Sounds about right for an academic computer scientist, they are usually terrible software engineers.
At least that’s what I saw from the terrible coding practices my brother learned during his CS degree (and what I’ve seen from basically every other recent CS grad entering the workforce that didn’t do extensive side projects and self teaching) that I had to spend years unlearning him afterwards when we worked together on a startup idea writing lots of code.

It looks like you have iOS Safari debugging turned on. Here’s the instructions I found from Apple to toggle it:
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to Safari.
- Scroll down to Advanced.
- Disable the Web Inspector toggle.
I found this info on this Apple developer documentation page: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/safari-developer-tools/inspecting-ios

That is...unfortunate.
I've been thinking about learning Rust after hearing about it's benefits, but was put off by its ugly type syntax that I hate from C++ and the whole "fighting with the borrow checker to do simple stuff" thing. But now it seems it also has the terrible bloated dependency culture I hate from JavaScript too!
IMO any security benefits from the increased memory safety are immediately nullified by the security nightmare that is hundreds of statically compiled dependencies...
I guess I'll keep waiting on the sidelines and see how the standard lib and dependency culture evolves.
didnt_readit 7 months ago • 100%
Wow I when you said 268 dependencies I figured JavaScript was involved…
Is the culture of Rust/Cargo getting as bad as JS/NPM these days or is this developer just using an insane amount of dependencies? I don’t have any experience working with Rust so I’m genuinely curious. I stay away from JS in part due to the insane amount of dependencies every non-trivial project has.
I’ve built projects in many languages and other than a few JS/React/ReactNative projects which seem to have unavoidably massive node_modules folders, I’ve never had more than maybe 10 dependencies in a project ever…

Even better, there's full archives of all yuzu and citra GitHub repos on archive.org. Yuzu depends on a bunch of other repos they had hosted on their GitHub to build. Same with Citra. All of that is included, plus full git history, in the archive.org 7z files. The torrents are actually really fast right now as there are a lot of seeders. Highly recommend downloading while you can in case Nintendo files a DMCA.

Is there any way to download the whole git repo with history from that archive? Their FAQ seems to indicate there's a way:
If absolutely needed, you can use the more expensive “revision” option of the Download button, that will prepare for you the equivalent of a git bare clone , which you will be able to use offline. This may require quite some time (hours, or even days for huge repositories).
But when I got to a repo I don't see a "revision" option when I click the download button...

Yep and it seems to line up with the rise of the Steam Deck and all the discussion around how viable gaming on Linux is these days. I think there were/are a LOT of people that only stick with Windows due to gaming. Hopefully as gaming support continues to improve on Linux more of those people will make the switch.

Yeah that’s a fair take. I also have an actual DSi that I use with a flash cart to play DS games, but if I only have my 3DS I feel like the smaller screen with weird borders still looks better than the crappy scaling, but I agree neither way is really ideal unfortunately.
didnt_readit 7 months ago • 100%
You can actually hold the start button while launching DA games on the 3DS and they will play without scaling. Makes the size of the images about the same size as a DS Lite (depending on which 3DS you have of course, XL will be larger).
IMO it’s the best way to play DS games on 3DS as I agree the scaling looks awful.

Wario Land hands down is the best game on the Virtual Boy IMO. Give that a play first, it's a really solid Wario Land game that makes good use of the 3D effects and even without the 3D part is just a good game (if you liked Wario Land on GB anyway).
After that just give them all a try, there's only 22 official games on the system haha.
Really cool development in the Virtual Boy emulation scene as of a couple days ago! For years and years I've wanted a Virtual Boy emulator on the 3DS since it's the perfect system to emulate the stereoscopic 3D effect, but one never came out. There was one called r3Ddragon that was partially developed years ago but it never really worked. Apparently over the past few months or so, a new developer forked that project and completed it! It's called Red Viper and plays all official Virtual Boy games at full speed on any 3DS with full stereoscopic 3D support! There have been some crashes reported by users now that it's available for testing, but I tried it out yesterday to play the Virtual Boy Wario Land game and it worked great! The graphics are super crisp on my New 3DS XL screen and the stereoscopic 3D effect is perfect! You can even change the default red color to any color you want and it has button mapping support to use the ABXY buttons as the second DPad when needed for some games (otherwise it's on the touch screen or vice versa). It should work on a 2DS but the games are very difficult to play without the stereoscopic effect and it kind of defeats the point, so I highly recommend using a 3DS. I happen to have a New 3DS but apparently it also plays full speed on a regular 3DS, so really any model is fine except the 2DS. Also the 3DS depth slider "works" but only as a toggle, due to how the games are programmed the depth is always at maximum or completely off (***EDIT: As of version 0.9.1 the depth slider is now fully functional!***). But honestly it looks great! I had completely given up hope that this would ever come out, but here we are!

Unfortunately I think this is exactly what Reddit wants. They want to be social media like Instagram or TikTok style. A lot more ad money from that crowd.
I know Reddit (and Lemmy) was always technically social media but I consider it more like Internet forums than the Facebook/Insta/TikTok style social media.

Yeah iOS has had native support for content blocking since iOS 9 back in 2015. You just install any ad blocker you want from the App Store and you get full desktop style ad blocking in Safari. Also of course you can use DNS based as blocking as well to block ads in apps etc.
I imagine there is a big conflict of interest from Google with Android ad blocking since they’re essentially an advertising company and run by far the biggest ad network in the world. I’m kind of surprised Android supports it at all to be honest, but good to hear there’s good support now.
Fuck ads!!
didnt_readit 7 months ago • 100%
That kind of makes sense though. I figure they assume you’ll have one computer hooked up and then a bunch of consumer devices that all use HDMI. And if you need a second computer hooked up you can also use HDMI if needed. Probably makes the most sense to the most people as having more DP in place of HDMI would just mean the average user couldn’t hook up as many devices since (almost?) no consumer devices use DP unfortunately.

I’m using AdGuard on an iPhone and there are zero ads in the article. You should get a better ad blocker I’m sure there are good ones on Android too.
didnt_readit 7 months ago • 100%
Why do so many people on Lemmy think iPhones don’t have ad blocking? It’s an OS feature and there’s like a dozen ad blockers available that all work with the stock browser.
I swear this is like the 5th time I’ve seen a comment like this on Lemmy. I swear no one that complains about iPhones has ever actually used one…
