I did some research on what would be a good OS for someone coming from Windows and at the time Linux Mint was recommended a lot so that's what I chose.

Yeah that is a likely outcome. I was just trying to stay positive and hope for the best. When I think about how bad things can get with the misuse of AI, it makes me kinda depressed.

The spoiler tag doesn't work on apps it seems.

I've made a post and a comment using the spoiler tag. On desktop and mobile Lemmy sites, it works as intended, hiding the text. In three apps I looked at the post & comment on, the spoiler tag doesn't hide the text. The apps I used are Jerboa, Liftoff, and Connect. ::: spoiler spoiler Example spoiler :::

Good point. I hope you're right that we're very far off from that reality. It's best to be prepared, though. Productivity increases from AI use across industries may bring us the hardware needed for encryption-breaking quantum computing algorithms sooner than we think.

Oh, okay I had no idea. Crazy how they bothered to trademark it but not do anything to support the mods of the AMA community, rather even actively harming them by firing the only person at Reddit that was helping them out, Victoria Taylor.

It's so crazy how they fired her. Reddit's leadership really loves to shoot themselves in the foot. I applaud the mods scaling back their AMA mod duties. No point in doing so much extra work for a community that reddit continually shows it doesn't care about and actively harms through their bad decisions.

Whoa, not good. Looks like more online accounts may get hacked from phishing with this increase of spam emails slipping through. I know a Youtuber that very recently got their Youtube account hacked & stolen from a phishing email sent to their Gmail. Luckily they got their account back, but I believe it was due to the help of their friends & audience on Youtube, as they were told by Google that most people who get their channel stolen like that don't get it back. I'm glad I use Proton Mail for my main email account. Its spam filter is robust.

Don't be too hard on yourself. It's hard to work when tired and I totally understand wanting to include the hair description if you thought it could be contextually relevant, and since you found out it's not, taking it out is the right choice. I'm not at all experienced in transcription for the blind so when I made my suggestion of clumpy afro-textured hair, at first I thought the point of the transcription was to be as detailed as possible while also being brief, so I thought the hair description had to stay in in some form. But now I see only contextually relevant info is needed. Good to know. We've both learned something in this, yeah? Thanks again for the work you do and being open to suggestions. You're awesome! 🙂

I tried the official app soon after it's initial release and didn't like it. Tried again the other day and it was even worse than I remember. It was ugly and slow scrolling on my phone. I deleted it right away. I don't mind using the reddit desktop site, if I go back for my niche communities until they make it to the Fediverse, but I'm no longer using reddit on mobile if I can't use my favorite 3rd-party app. Reddit even made it's mobile website annoying to use, trying push people to its app. I absolutely hate when sites do that. I'm so happy I have Lemmy to use on mobile whether its in an app or the mobile website.

I see. It's an understandable assumption to make. That's his natural hair texture. You may see this video he talks about his hair. The thing about afro-textured hair is it can stand up and out on it's own. No wind needed, lol (and I say this as a person with this kind of hair texture).

so that he comes across as crazier

Are you sure this is the reason? Did he state his reason that way? Or is that your assumption that he wants to look crazier? In a post above @BarackObama@lemmy.world said his reason was because brushing it takes too much time according to interviews. I haven't seen it myself since there's no timestamp, but I'll check it out later.

so what’s the blind user of this program going to attach to the concept of unkempt hair?

The problem isn't with blind users, but sighted users who could read that and associate afro-textured hair like that with being unkempt.

Edit: Found the timestamp in the Eric Andre interview with Larry King about his hair. Here he doesn't say he wants to look crazier. He says that's what his hair looks like when he doesn't brush it. And as I mentioned in another comment, afro-textured hair isn't meant to be either combed or brushed every day because that can cause breakage.

Edit 2: Corrected his Eric Adams to Eric Andre. Woops.

You're great for transcribing! To avoid the word unkempt, as that can be offensive, I would transcribe the hair as 'clumpy afro-textured hair'.

Yeah, if you don't comb (not really brush as a brush wouldn't detangle) afro-textured hair of that length, it will clump up like that. And afro-textured hair isn't meant to be combed or brushed daily. The less it's manipulated the healthier it is as frequent manipulation can cause breakage. That's why you'll see some people with afro-textured hair keep their hair in braids or twists or locs if they want to look more what is considered "presentable" while also protecting their hair from breakage. These are called protective styles. Braiding and twisting takes time though that Eric Andre probably doesn't want to spend and locs are kinda permanent. If his hairstlye works best for his lifestyle, I think that's good. It's better for people to see the different ways afro-textured hair can exist in its natural state because I think such exposure without ridicule can lead to further acceptance.

Edit: Thank you for sharing those interview links!

I edited my first comment with this Lemdro.id link that lists all available apps with descriptions if you're interested in finding an app that works for you. If you want to vote and comment on that post with your lemmy.world account, I think this link will work for you https://lemmy.world/c/lemdroid@lemdro.id From there just go to the topic. Hmm, my preview is showing that link as a lemm.ee link (my instance) rather than a lemmy.world link, so sorry if it doesn't work for you. But I include it to show you how to make links on other instances accessible to your own account on a different instance for voting, subscribing, and commenting.

'Your instance url/c/community name@community's instance url' does the trick. Took me a little while to figure that out, so I thought I'd give you a tip too. 🙂

The other way to do it is just to go to Communities at the top of your instance and use the search box to search for the community name. Make sure to select All under List of Communities so that the results include communities on other instances. When the community comes up in the results, you'll be able to go to it and interact with it on your account. Just look to make sure it's right instance as we do have some duplicate communities in the Fediverse across different instances. Like if you search Android in the Communities search box with All selected, we currently have 3 communities that are /c/Android but on 3 different instances: lemmy.world, lemmy.ml, and Lemdro.id. But if you search Lemdroid, there's only one community and that's on Lemdro.id.

Also I don't know if you've seen this image which helped me understand more how Lemmy works: The Fediverse for Reddit Refugees. It goes over with pictures how to search for Lemmy communities.

If the mobile website fine for you, you don't need to get an app. I used the mobile website in my phone's browser with no problem for a few days before I started trying out apps out of curiosity. So far, I've settled on the Liftoff app, but again having an app isn't necessary because of how well the mobile website works. I'm not someone who needs an app for everything and I prefer it when mobile websites are useable. Reddit made me angry when they made their mobile website annoying to use by trying to force people onto their app. I used a 3rd-party app instead, but now that's going away so here I am on Lemmy.

If you don't want to bother with Lemmy apps, you can create a shortcut to Lemmy.world on your phone's home screen which can make it faster to open up Lemmy as if you were using an app. Since you're using Chrome, I'm assuming you're on Android, so here are some instructions if you want to add the shortcut.

How to Add a Website to Your Android Home Screen

    Hope that helps!

Edit: Also, if you do want to try out an app, Here's a post with some Lemmy apps that are currently available. If you need any more help, just let us know!

You're so lucky to experience that! I'm currently stuck in the USA in a car-dependent city. I hate driving. I'm going to do whatever I can to relocate to a city or country where I don't need a car and public transportation is clean and safe.

Another reddit refugee here! Although my preferred reddit app, Infinity, is still working at the moment, I no longer want to use reddit as my frontpage of the internet due to the actions & attitude of spez towards the users, mods, and 3rd party developers. I'm thrilled to be here at Lemmy. Thank you so much for hosting this instance! I will become a sponsor if I can.
