I currently have an annoying bit of string stuck in my teeth, and I can't remove it because it's the end of my disolving stitches and is tied into my gums. I do not like this situation.

One advantage to a toothless cat, bites are not something I need to be concerned about! You might like to pass on to Ted how lucky he is to have a heater to sit on, Miss Meow is not provided with such luxuries.

Miss Meow will volunteer to eat them for him. Miss Meow is currently very unhappy with the portion sizes of her meals at the moment, and is rather disgruntled that I keep picking up Mr Woof's excess dry food and not letting her eat that either.

It's a bit like when your employer pays part of your pay to the ATO in anticipation of future tax. If the company distributes money they have already paid tax on you will have a dividend that is paid directly to you, plus an amount that has been paid in tax. Fully franked means the company has paid tax on the whole lot, partially franked means they only paid tax on a part of it. When you come to do your tax return the ATO will work out how much you actually owe (based on the tax rate for your income) and either ask for a bit more tax or refund the extra.

I think last time I made waffles I must have done a half batch. This time I did a full batch and I now have 16 waffles in the freezer for future consumption, along with a couple in my tummy.
I also stewed up my remaining apples and pears with some spice & brown sugar, a couple of serves are in the freezer, one was eaten on the waffles and one is waiting to be topped with yoghurt for a future snack. I'm starting to run out of room in the freezer!

I made the camembert and cherry muffins. The texture is great, but the flavour is a bit incipid. I tasted a bit of the dip first and was underwhelmed by that too, so it is not very surprising. It should be fine for a snack warmed with a bit of butter, or could accompany a soup or stew. 6/10, I'll eat them, but wouldn't make them again.

I try to harness my more enthusiastic moments to make extra to freeze or preserve for the future so I can pull out easy meals when I don't have the energy. Things like extra cheese sauce are especially good, because it doesn't take much more effort to make a big batch than a small one.

I think I have my menu plan sorted for the next few days, which should clear out everything perishable from the fridge before I am away for a few days next week. I've also fully cleared out the vegetable drawer, which was nowhere near as bad as I feared - I did find some very gooey celery and some tomatoes that were more liquid than solid. I'm going to freeze a few things I have excess of (cauliflower & leek bake, some mushrooms and some stewed apple & pear) and have put some excess bananas in the freezer for future cooking. Plus I'll be freezing the planned camembert and cherry muffins. This whole "cook everything from scratch and focus on reducing food waste" hobby is very labour intensive some days!

I think it is savoury with a touch of sweetness. Crackers and wine would work, but is probably not the best option to scoff the lot like that myself...
It's the sweet bit that limits what it goes with. If it was onion or something instead of cherry it could be used for things like a baked potato, with eggs or a much wider range of sandwich fillings. Plus the use by date is today, so I can't really spread out using it up much.

I almost took the lazy route and skipped the free food market this morning, but it turned out to be a good day and I got lots of good vegies. I also got some camembert and cherry dip I'm not sure what to do with. I'm thinking either using as a filling in some pastry, or muffins. I'm leaning towards muffins as pastry is more hassle.

Nice looking day today, I really need to try and get outside for a bit. I should probably pull some weeds while I'm out there too. Or clean the back paving, it's gotten quite gunky and slippery.
I received my first ever order from Ali Express yesterday. Their website is quite dreadful to deal with, but I managed to get some thread I've been struggling to get from any Australian suppliers. Some sewing needles I bought were not all the right type, and I got a refund without having to return - which is nice, because 4 out of 5 were right, and the others I can use eventually, just not what I wanted.
It is frustrating how expensive sewing notions are in Australia, it is generally much cheaper to buy ready made items than the materials to make it yourself.

Miserable weather for either. I would honestly stay home instead of a trip tomorrow, but if forced out I would choose Ballarat. It will be a touch colder in Ballarat, but the road in Walhalla can be a bit dangerous and I wouldn't want to be driving through there in a storm.

The standard roster where I work is 4 days on and 4 days off. Well, sort of, because the second two work days are actually nights and finish at 6am, thus somewhat ruining the first day off (along with your body clock). This also requires working 12 hour shifts, on a rotating roster that means you can't do anything regularly on set days (or even figure out what day it actually is most of the time).

I think I have the same initial reaction due to bullying, with a particular distaste for teenage girls. But I can attest to the fact that not all kids are disrespectful on PT. Last time I went into the CBD on a train I got on at the same time as a group of school boys. I was prepared for noise and rumbunctiousness, but instead got to over hear them earnestly discussing how to determine when the train had reached the appropriate level of crowding that they should stand up and leave their seats for adults to sit down 🤣

I've got mine on a shelf inside the lounge room, so only I get to be dazzled by the light. I put a shower curtain around it to cut it down, but it still glows a lot. I've bought some mylar sheets that I will use to line it inside to cut the light further. The shower curtain has a nice forest scene on it and is quite pretty, but still a bit too bright - and the reflective surface will be good for the plants too.

I haven't planted anything so far - I am probably moving so don't want to put too much into the garden just to have to leave it behind! I have been doing a lot of sorting, so I'm redoing the indoor seed raising area in preparation for the future. I'll be getting rid of an old flourescent light and moving to all LEDs, plus I'm upgrading to two heat mats. Hopefully next year I'll have a permanent garden situation so I can put it to good use.

After a messup with last week's appointment I finally had my dental implant appointment first thing this morning. I did have to drive to Armadale for it, which sucked because it adds about 30mins travel time and involved driving on tram tracks. Apparently the bone had not regrown enough so instead of the implant I have had a bone graft, and the implant is rescheduled for January. It was a pretty quick procedure, but involves cutting open the gum, filling it with some sort of bone powder and stitching it back up, so it's going to be a bit hurty for a while. Plus the sensation of stitches in the mouth is never nice. As a positive it kicks the costs a bit further down the road, and the bone graft was bulk billed so no extra cost. I've no idea why Medicare pays for some of the dental stuff, but I'm definitely not arguing.
Edit to add: I'm grateful that my insurance has limited ability to roll over unused dental limits into the next year, otherwise the move to January could have pushed the other work I need back a year!

I think I used up all my creativity yesterday, so I've been working on decluttering/sorting my sewing room instead. I think I have finally gotten all my cotton in one place and under control. I have far too many partly used reels, many of them multiples of the same colour. When you have a mess it is easier to just grab a new one for each project instead of finding the old one. I now have all of the partly used rolls in one box, roughly sorted by colour tone. I have also ordered some clips to stop the thread unravelling from the bobbins and reels to try and keep things a bit more orderly. Some of the rolls are getting a bit old, but nothing too antique - I sold all the ones on wooden reels a few years ago!
I also found some nice thick cardboard that I need for the covers of the book I am making - an old fabric covered storage box that I was going to throw out but didn't because Miss Meow enjoyed jumping in it. The cardboard inside that gives it structure should be a perfect weight.

Instead of doing anything constructive I should be doing I spent the morning shopping online for embroidery cottons and some additions to make my thread stand more user friendly. I would like to know why, when I already own so many different colours of cotton, I always struggle to find the right colours for every new pattern I do?
I'm not sure how we're supposed to believe that disposal of nuclear waste won't be a problem when we can't manage systems to properly deal with the waste we are creating now.

The change of year is always a good time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. I invite everyone to post here with their New Year reflections and resolutions. Next Year I will make another post and link back to this one so we can read our past thoughts and ideas. You are free to use any format you like, but I would suggest: What are the major milestones and changes that occured this year (and further back if you like)? What good things are happening in your life that you would like to keep going? What would you like to change or add into your life in the future? What challenges do you expect to arise over the next year, and how do you plan on dealing with them?
I've converted my front yard to be mostly edible plants, I think they are often underrated in how ornamental they can be.
It looks like Melbourne won't get the worst of this, but we could have some heavy storms over Christmas. Remember if you are driving to slow down and pull over if necessary, and don't drive through floodwater. Driving through floodwater can be extremely dangerous, and if you try to drive under a bridge and get stuck we will also all point and laugh at you (this applies whether it is due to flooding or excessive height).
How does your garden grow?
From Melbourne Zoo's Facebook page: Melbourne Zoo is closing today due to high winds in the area. Our priority is keeping our Zoo Members, visitors, staff and the animals in our care safe, so we will be closing for the remainder of today. If you have purchased a ticket online and had not entered the zoo before midday, you will be automatically refunded and you do not need to call us. Werribee Open Range Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary and Kyabram Fauna Park all remain open today. Melbourne Zoo will reopen tomorrow morning at 9am. We look forward to seeing you then.
University of Tasmania currently have a Certificate in [Climate Change Action and Awareness](https://www.utas.edu.au/courses/cse/courses/70i-undergraduate-certificate-in-climate-change-awareness-and-action), and a Certificate and Diploma in [Sustainable Living](https://www.utas.edu.au/study/undergraduate/sustainable-living) available with a HECS waiver - meaning that if you are eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place you can enroll and they will waive the student contribution. The courses are fully online with no fixed times you need to be available, so are quite flexible to fit around other commitments. I am halfway through the Diploma of Sustainable Living, and have also enrolled in the Certificate of Climate Change Action and Awareness for next year - there is an overlap of subjects, and the main climate change subjects are available in both. Many of the sustainable living subjects are practical and the assignements relate you your own situation and local area. One of the subjects available in both courses is "Living with Fire" which I would highly recommend for anyone who could be effected by bushfires - as well as learning more about bushfires in general the final assignment is the creation of a personal fire plan.

The assignments have included things like assessing the soil in my garden, and the final assignment is pulling together everything to create a comprehensive design plan for my own garden. There are also subjects on sustainable housing and biodiversity, if you are interested in doing some study I highly recommend looking into this.
My zucchini produced a beautifully matched set of flowers yesterday morning. The one on the left is female, the one on the right is male - you can tell the difference as the male has only a single stamen in the centre. You can also tell the difference if you look behind the flowers, the female has a tiny zucchini attaching it to the plant, the male has a normal stem. If your baby zucchini are withering on the vine rather than growing you need to hand pollinate them. You can either pull off the male flower, remove the stamen and brush it onto the centre of the female flower or use a brush to transfer the pollen (the flowers wither soon anyway, so I just remove the flower).
I've certainly had plenty of these butterflies around my place. I'm hoping that there are enough predatory insects built up from snacking on my aphids that will cross over to butterfly larvae.

I would like a place I can talk about the random happenings in my garden that don't justify a stand alone post. Exciting things like my tomato plant finally growing, or the sadness that my snow peas seem to be dying off prematurely. Would anyone else like to share their gardening snippits? If there is enough interest I can set up a regularly weekly thread ([@lodion@aussie.zone](https://aussie.zone/u/lodion) I presume that will be ok?) Pic is just for interest - this is the collection of gardening pictures I put together to illustrate my garden design goals for a recent assignment.
I've stocked up on antihistimines and have been using my Nasonex daily for a while, so hopefully won't be too badly affected.

Sad news. I have been watching periodically and thought something was wrong when every time I looked over the last few days the nest was empty. I hoped I just had bad timing.
Or, for those boring old manual clocks, you will have to put them forward an hour yourself. Alternatively, feel free to save time now and manually add an hour in your head every time you check the time, then after a few weeks get around to actually changing them, then spend a few weeks confused about whether you changed them or not and if you still need to add an hour and checking the time on your phone to make sure.
I'm not sure why some people lose all ability to engage with the real world once technology is involved, but taking selfies and using a GPS seem to create a dangerous disconnect with reality for some people.
