Linux Mint (I'd recomment Debian edition, LMDE) is basically what you want to try out. I've set up a PC with it for my stepfather that hasn't used Linux at all and he's happy with it. It's designed to be as newbie-friendly as possible. You won't have more issues with it than you'll already have using Windows.

Then if you feel unsatisfied with anything about it, you can go looking for other linux distributions (distros) because you have a general idea what's happening.

I hope the internet is prepared for when VPNs will be targeted. A LOT of free access to the internet nowadays hinges on the use of VPNs and I have been dreading the day when corpos and politicians finally catch up to that fact for some years now. Remember when credit card companies removed themselves from Pornhub as a payment method after just one article from about exploiative material on the platform?

Just think about the consequences when you will only be able to subscribe to VPNs through bitcoin. I know, subscribing with your credit card isn't the smartest move in regards to privacy, but it works for a lot of stuff that isn't that dramatic (e. g. circumventing geoblocking).

I think I have a similar situation personally. I can use public transportation for 90% of my travels and resort to high-speed trains or rented cars for the rest.

It works out fine, but I'd consider getting an EV just for the increased flexibility and comfort, if there would be some alternative. Which would be a simple-as-possible battery on wheels either way, but for it to be attractive as a short-range only vehicle it would has to be dirt-cheap. I'm not paying 10-15k for that, new or used.

I don't need a scientific study to know that most days I'd need my car for a significantly lower driving distance than the few long-range outliers.

The problem isn't a logistical of "Wow! Turns out I can commute with an EV because I don't drive 400 km to work each day! Thank you Mr. Scientist!" but a financial one. The large majority of people can afford one car, if any, and this one car has to work for everything. Do you think people are happy investing in a 20k or more EV when they still have to rent a car to visit their familiy over holidays?

If it's just for the sake of driving around town daily, EVs need to get significantly cheaper to be interesting for people with normal incomes.

Garuda is very nice. Only thing I have atm is that there are some issues with updating the system where it doesn't connect to the garuda repo servers or whatever. I'm not proficient enough to know if it's their stuff that breaks or the base arch, so I wonder if doing the tedious thing and installing a base arch system myself would be better to understand everything. It's my first linux system for reference.
