In Germany driving while under the influence is an almost instant MPU. Will they relax the law now, or do it like with alcohol, you need to be over a certain value to have your licensed revoked? No disrespect against people that smoke weed but I don't want to share a road with people stoned out of their minds.

Letting kids transition before they even reach puberty is a great way to potentially ruin their lives forever. Kids are so impressionable and change faster than the wind. They instantly succumb to peer pressure and 99% of the cases have no clue what they want because they are kids. They don't have a lot of life experience.

I know only one case where I knew that transition would have been normal at any age for him. When we were kids it would have been 100% impossible. Now we are older farts and he still didn't transition, he doesn't want and would have regretted the decision if he would have had the possibility to do it as a kid.

Transition as a kid should be nearly impossible and you should be put through an infinite amount of tests and visits to the doctor. Reach an age where you can be considered an adult, go ahead and schedule an appointment and transition away. Do as you please.

True but if you use Vivaldi and then you try to go back to Firefox, it's like going back in the early 2000s. I always say this, Firefox should have been like Vivaldi. Super customizable and packed with features. Instead you have to rely on extensions and thus put your trust in the creator of said extension that they will not sell it. Heck even with extensions, trying to mimic the new tab page from Vivaldi is a masterclass in patience.

I would love that. I have a refurbished Steam Deck and I don't use it that much, actually I'm barely using it. I've been a PC gamer all my life, I have a pretty strong workstation and a gaming laptop.

So for me a perfect pocket Deck would be a smaller and lighter one, less powerful to play indie titles, 2d games or really old games like Fallout 3, New Vegas(40fps). Not to try and run Starfield on it or any new and demanding games. I play those games on my PC. The current Deck is too big and not really carry friendly in my bags.

Still I bought it to support the system, I would love for the whole gaming scene to move to Linux, even if most of my PCs run Windows. Maybe this in turn will also push app developers to also make their apps available on Linux.

Look at more practical example. Steam, is so big that other publishers said, no we won't put our games in your store anymore. We don't want to pay you 30%, we will make our own stores. Few years later guess where they came crawling back. I mean really big publishers like EA and Ubisoft, on Windows where you can have a store at the snap of your fingers, you don't need Steam. But because Steam is so big and all people buy from Steam, you need to sell there.

In case of Apple it will be even worse, who will dare to not publish in their App Store and leave 99% revenue on the table? Yeah.

Reading the comments from that article is a prime example of how a cult functions.

In reality this will have a 0,002% impact. Most phone users are tech-illiterate and have no idea how to use their devices. You expect these people to go to a different store? On Android you can have other app stores, why don't you have? Because Play Store is default and all app developers want to be where most users are, not on a 3-4% user share store.

It will most likely be background noise in the first months and everyone will go back to the App Store. The only people that will use an alternate store will most likely be the same ones that use F-droid, so 0,002% of the users.

But hey, it's better to scream how this whole thing is making their devices less secure, because Apple told them so.

For my small business I use Office 365 Business Essentials, whatever it's called now, the cheapest one. Been using it for many years and for the price/features, it's pretty unbeatable. I use the new Outlook on my workstation since a few months, it's pretty slow and not feature complete but was ok. I'm in the EU and haven't been prompted with that window where it talks about advertisers. Will check Monday if I see a list of advertisers but I think for paid users it's not the same.

For personal mail, I use Thunderbird, I even donated to them. I like it but would have been great if it had a view like Outlook. At the moment it has table view and cards view. Wish the cards view would more customizable.

Built a new machine, the moment Unraid is running there are strange interference sounds. Edit: turning off Intel Turbo Boost Technology makes the sound go away.

Built a small machine using an [Asrock N100DC-ITX](https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/N100DC-ITX/) motherboard, it has an Intel N100 built in and I also have 1x NVMe and 2x HDDs. The board has a DC Jack so no external PSU. First time I booted it, the NVMe had Opensuse on it so I played around a little, no problem. When I boot into BIOS also no problem. When I boot into Unraid, there is a strange sound coming from the back of the board, sounds like an interference sound. I cannot tell if it's coming from the ethernet port or from the power DC Jack. I think it's from the power. I recorded it with my phone and bumped the sound +20 dB, this is how it sounds like. You can hear the fans and that sound. https://soundcloud.com/user-300866676-719653331/n100-1 https://soundcloud.com/user-300866676-719653331/n1002 For power I tried using both an Intel NUC 65w power adapter and an Asus laptop 90w power adapter, the one Asrock recommends on their website. The system has been running for 1-2days, with 4 containers and Home Assistant VM, it idles at around 16w. Without Home Assistant, it drops to 11w. Any idea what that sound is? **Edit 1**: If I go into BIOS and turn off Intel Turbo Boost Technology then it is silent but also kills my performance? ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/75559c7b-caca-42a6-94ac-d6de6b74889e.jpeg) **Edit 2** So because I did not want to leave Turbo Boost on, I did some more digging and also realized my CPU was always boosting in Unraid. using "watch grep \"cpu MHz\" /proc/cpuinfo" it was almost always between 2900Mhz and 3300Mhz. Small Unraid PC with 2 HDDs. Silverstone SG13 case with Asrock N100DC-ITX, the SATA power cable was too short so I had to improvise.

The Asrock N100DC-ITX uses a 19v power brick so no separate PSU to power the drives. It comes with a 4 pin cable that splits into 2 SATA power. ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/c6246430-1975-49ed-851c-a76df2dbc15d.jpeg) The case I chose, Silverstone SG13, comes with a 3.5" HDD bracket but you need to mount the drive belly up so you can screw it in. The second drive I want to put where the PCIe slot is, found a nice 3d model for that. The thing is, the power cable would be too short and the drives would be too far apart to reach both. ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/1e6e71b4-c5c7-46f7-9f70-8d8b24743381.jpeg) So I removed the HDD bracket and cut 2 L-shaped aluminum stripes and I screwed the drive belly down. This way the cable now reaches both drives. I know, I could have cut the cable and made it longer but I prefer to avoid playing with power cables if I can. Turned out quite good. Wanted to share it with other people. Now I need to find someone to 3d print the PCIe HDD holder and find some rubber stuff to put under the L-shapes to dampen the sound of the drive. This is the 3d model, https://www.printables.com/model/385403-pci-slot-hdd-bracket but V2 with the nice feet. PS the drives in the images are broken so I just used them as dummy drives. ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/b021cc10-bad0-4e6f-b8de-73b313de06ab.jpeg) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/df815343-bb0f-482f-b1eb-4feda7998fca.jpeg) That's about it.

On an older Pentium Intel Nuc, only OpenSuse can wake it up from sleep, why?

Linux Noob here The Nuc is sitting under my TV and my wife uses it mostly to watch reality tv shows, cooking shows, etc on different websites. The requirement was for the Nuc to go to sleep after 30minutes of inactivity and to wake it up with the keyboard. It had Leap 15.3 so I wanted to upgrade it but I managed to botch the upgrade. I decided to go with Debian instead, installed it, configured everything and when I handed it over to my wife I realized the Nuc never woke from sleep. Then I remember I had this problem in the past with it when I tried a whole bunch of distros and none of them managed to wake it up. I also read on Intel forums where people complained about the same issue with different Nucs and I think the general consensus was that it's a problem with the Nucs and it can't be solved. What happens is, when the Nuc is sleeping, the power LED slowly blinks. When you wake it up, the LED goes completely away, like it's turned off but you can hear the fan is starting to spin. However, you don't have any image and you have to hold the power button a lot longer to turn if off, like it soft-resets. So I nuked Debian, installed Leap 15.5 and it wakes from sleep without any issues. I am happy that it does and I like Opensuse but I have no idea what it does different compared to other distros in this regard.

Satu Mare(Romania). Two German tourists thought they were in Schengen and ended up with criminal charges www.presasm.ro

*Translation with deepl:* This is no joke! Two German tourists got a criminal record because they thought Romania had joined the Schengen Area! It all started after the surveillance cameras located near the border line, on the Garbolcz road (Hungary), at the S.P.F. Petea headquarters, around 17.40, issued an alert and transmitted images of two people riding their bicycles from Romania to Hungary, according to PresaSM information. The images transmitted by the surveillance cameras showed the two people riding around the concrete obstacle and the barrier on the road, illegally crossing the border from Romania into Hungary. The intervention team of S.P.F. Petea was alerted and went to the scene, but the two persons could not be identified and detained. At the same time, the Hungarian border authorities were informed and sent a team to the area, thus managing to apprehend the two persons. During the border meeting that took place at the S.P.F. Petea headquarters, in order to jointly investigate the border event, the Hungarian border authorities informed that the two persons are German citizens. According to PresaSM data, in front of the Hungarian authorities, the persons in question declared that they were on holiday and were travelling on bicycles guided by the GPS application of their mobile phones. This is how they arrived in the town of Petea, where the app showed them that there was a border crossing point, as they intended to cross the border from Romania into Hungary. Being used to travelling freely through Europe, without customs controls between countries, they did not know that they could not cross the border there.

Can a reply to an ongoing email conversation land in spam?

Had an exchange of emails with someone, around 4-5 back and forth emails. He then told me that my last reply never arrived. When I forwarded that email again to him, he told me that actually the original reply arrived but landed in spam... he checked it after I forwarded the initial reply. It's not critical or even a super important conversation but I think he lied to me. Is there any chance that a reply lands in spam if the last 4 mails in a thread arrived without a problem? The emails were sent from a custom domain, using Office 365 Business. I have that email address for more than 6 years and I never had a problem with my emails landing in spam or never arriving. It's the first time I am hearing about it but I think he is duping me. Edit Thanks all for the replies, it's good to know that it can happen.

Wondering if I should make multiple partitions or keep it as PopOS made it.

Linux noob here. Usually in Windows if I have a 1TB SSD, I make a 250GB partition for Windows and all of its things and I use the rest for a second partition where I install my stuff and store my files. Usually in case Windows decides to go belly up, I still have my files. In more than 20 years it has never happened but I've always done it like that. I mean if Windows goes bad, I can still remove the drive and insert it into a different PC and copy my files away. Should I shrink Partition 3 and make another one? Or keep it as it is? If I would, I read that I need to boot with a live usb to be able to shrink it. What kind of partition would I make?

Blind Drive, an audio-based, black comedy action arcade game.

    >The entire game is experienced through your ears. You're blindfolded and going against traffic. Cars rushing past, angry drivers yelling at you. Cops on your tail. And a sadistic madman on the phone. Can you do it? >Play as Donnie, trying to make a quick buck in a scientific study but quickly finding himself in over his head, cuffed to the wheel and driving blindfolded against traffic. Plus he's late for dinner with Grandma. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1300600/Blind_Drive/

    In 2017, I bought a 1TB 960 Evo for 466€. Now, in 2023 the 1TB 970 Evo Plus is 43€.

It's incredible how much the prices have fallen and that's how it should be. Sure, I bought the 960 close to launch but still the difference is staggering. The 960 Evo still chugs along albeit it's a new one because a few months after I bought it, I had to RMA it. I guess that's what happens when you are an early adopter. I lost a few hours of work when the original 960 Evo decided to stop working but it also taught me to be more paranoia with backups.

I made something, it seemed to fit like a glove.

Read this article and thought it perfectly fits that subreddit. Of course based on the subs rules, I removed the company's name 🤡. Wonder how long it will stay up. https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/6/23786474/reddit-nsfw-moderator-protest-final-warning

Is there an option to hide individual posts? I know there is one to hide read posts.

I know about the one to hide read posts and most apps have implemented it. Also the option to block a whole community. Not that, just scrolling the posts feed and clicking an X or something to hide a particular post. I had it in Sync for Reddit and I think Reddit has it native. Would be really useful.

One Lonely Outpost is now in Early Access

The game wants to be a Stardew Valley/farming sim in space. I really liked the idea and have been closely watching the game. It had a successful [Kickstarter](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/aurorianstudios/one-lonely-outpost) campaign but then the original devs handed the game to their [publisher and bailed](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/aurorianstudios/one-lonely-outpost/posts/3613147). The game had a nice pixel art look and feel but then they switched to a [mix of 3d and pixel art](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/aurorianstudios/one-lonely-outpost/posts/3553646). I was a big fan of the initial look. The EA version compared to the demo version doesn't have any new features. At the moment, I recommend to whishlist it and wait to see how it evolves. Reviews are mixed. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1465550/One_Lonely_Outpost/

Anybody got their free Pixel Buds-A from buying the Pixel 7a?

I got my approval email on the 25th of May and it said I will get them in 30 days, in extreme cases in 60 days. On the page where you can check it still says the same thing that they will come in 30 days. Don't know when they will send it, I am in Europe.

Bumpstick, try the demo on Steam, it's super fun!

    >Bumpstick is a unique platformer, where you control a bouncy neon stick and move through levels as fast as possible. The game is deceptively simple but so good as you try to control the stick. I played the demo 3 time already, trying to improve my time in each level. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1750010/Bumpstick/

Why does every Youtuber say you MUST get a 10GbE to edit videos from your NAS?

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/469632 > Looking to upgrade my Synology DS218+ to a 4 or 5 bay NAS because I am running out of storage. These past few days, I saw everybody and their mother say you cannot edit on anything else than a 10gig ethernet. > > At the moment I am editing stuff from my workstation(AMD 5800x, 3060TI, 64GB, 1TB NVME) and I was curios how much worse would the experience be if I tried to edit from the NAS via my 1gig ethernet. > > Most of my work is shot in 4k 150MBps and some even in 1080p. > > So I copied around 5gigs of footage to my main NVME and the same footage on my NAS. First I added the NVME footage in a 4k timeline, chopped it up a little, threw 5 random LUTs, threw a noise reduction node and a camera shake effect. > Playback in the edit page was ok, my GPU was gasping for air but playback was smooth. I rendered it at 16MBps and it came out in 5:22minutes. > > Next, I deleted that footage, emptied cache and added the same clips from the NAS with the same cuts, LUTS and noise reduction. > Playback was also super smooth and it rendered in 5:23minutes, so 1 second slower. That must be why everyone says you need 10GbE. > > During all this time I had the Synology resource monitor on and it jumped at 30MBps at most. > > So no real difference between the two. Next I took around 50gigs of footage and threw it on the same timeline, stacked it 4-5 times and indeed it was slow but it was because Davinci was caching stuff, when it finished the playback was super smooth. > > All the time, proxies were disabled so the PC had to do all the work, if I add proxies it's a breeze. > > I think that's where the difference comes in, Davinci is caching the clips and it doesn't really constantly read the original files. > > I'm not saying you don't need more than 1gig, especially if you have more people working at the same time. If you work with RAW footage or footage that's 400MBps and up but the videos and posts I saw made it seem like even if you edit phone videos, 10GbE is a must.... > > Not a scientific test but I was super surprised to see that it made no difference if I was editing locally or from my NAS.

How do you power 3.5" HHDs on a motherboard with DC input power?

I saw the new motherboards coming out with the N100 processor and I think it would make a great little NAS system. This one has 2x SATA connectors but then it hit me, if the mobo doesn't have a 24-pin connector, how do you power the Sata drives? So far I've only built PCs with a regular PSU so I never wondered. I think it might be a stupid question :) This is the mobo https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/N100DC-ITX/index.asp#Overview

Forever Skies just launched in Early Access on Steam! store.steampowered.com

Didn't buy it yet, will most likely wait a few days to watch a few videos but had it wishlisted since it seemed interesting. Seems to be a mix between Raft, Worlds Adrift and Subnautica.

Tau Station Space Game - Text-based MMORPG for Sci-fi Games Fans https://taustation.space/

Today we explore Tau Station. It's a text-based game but unlike other text-based games, it has really nice graphics, so I guess it's a graphics-text-based game :). You explore the galaxy, going from station to station and you can even buy your own ship. Whilst most text based games revolve around you going and attacking other players, Tau's strength lies in its storytelling. It is filled with interesting quests and lore. It looks like this: ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/ee116942-31ba-4bfc-8b69-7ac6c650de9f.jpeg)

Browsing the posts from the main page makes Bitdefender go crazy. Why?

I was just browsing the main page and opening different posts, any idea why Bitdefender thinks some pages are suspicious? The first one with the infected, I think it was a post and it had some pictures, didn't click on anything, just loaded the post.
