Is there any class in school you’ve done that’s been sustainable for you? If you feel like coding/art is more like a hobby and you don’t want to be stuck doing it forever, maybe there’s something else out there for you that you’d feel content working on a little every day.

If you’re worried about coding as a job from competitiveness though, I think don’t worry too much about it. It’ll work out if you just try your best. Even you doing coding for fun is pretty cool :o

It iis easier to sign up for kbin I think because kbin lets you sign up with google or facebook. I did gmail google sign up because I like being lazy.

Kbin is slightly more confusing (they named everything a little weird), so if you do make a kbin.social account lmk or ask many questions about how to do stuff. It’s easy once I knew stuff like magazine = subreddit

@piotrsikora @ernest Is there an easy way to add all the new communities to an instance? I’ve noticed somehow you’ve been able to add what looks like every magazine, even if it’s newly created.

I could help add new magazines to a new instance others can migrate to, but there’s so many, and I don’t know how to keep up with any new ones created on lemmy or kbin.

I try to give time and patience to kbin because it’s actually only a month old xD I think it’s this guy called ernesto and some of his friends that are developing for it. They have to fix a lot of things on the site because it’s still in a prototype mode. They work very fast though but yeah I think they’re going as fast as humanly possible right now. I’m glad there is an app being made already right now for both lemmy and kbin.

Yeah I have noticed on lemmy.studio, a newer server, some of the communities from either kbin or lemmy didn’t update, but then after some time, som of them diiid update, with I think all of the old posts, and even if those old posts didn’t have comments. So maybe that’s why it happened for me but some are still unupdated

I feel like it’s not that bad to be uniform in some ways though. There’s lots of different email sites, but the way they’re organized/labelled is very similar.

I feel like if you want that kind of beautiful system where everything’s decentralized yet still able to talk to each other, then it’s better if some things are standard.

Even the general strategy kbin, lemmy, mastodon use have similarities to be able to talk to each other. They’re all on the fediverse.observer where we can see all their stats in one place. There was uniformity in a good balance. All three of these use activity pub, which I hear is a good thing. If not, I think there would be less synchronization? And then people might say, hey, we should let everyone develop the way they like, and it’s true, but there’s a good benefit in making some stuff the same

I agreee. With email, there’s different email websites I can use, but it would put me off if I made a gmail account, and everything was labelled differently there compared to thte other email websites.

Like if inbox was called something really strange, I just think it would put me off a lot. I use kbin, and even I think it would help if these were renamed. Kbin is new too! Only a month old, so I don’t even know if the developers felt strongly about calling it a magazine or just needed to label all of these in a way that made sense to them.

But yeah I try to be inclusive and use “communities/magazines” but it feels kind of ridiculous because it’s so long. I don’t even like “communities” because it is so long to type…I like “forums” for both. It makes sense because they are forums, and it’s short. I don’t mind “communities” though, and it would be so great if kbin wants to consider relabelling, but they technically also don’t have to and I still will use it.

But I still think it’s the smart thing to do to make it easier for others to use. Should try to decrease friction so people can use their tool to do other things, rather than spend so much time figuring out how to use the tool.

If this stuff hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t even known how theyve been treating the mods badly since forever xD I definitely would have kept using the app, I was starting to do a lot of doomscrolling on there. I just didn’t know there was anything wrong with the company.

However, them messing up like this opened me to the idea of a social media that isn’t for profit. Even if this stuff hadn’t happened, it would happen later. It happens to all the social medias, and it happened to twitter. Because of this event this time, I learned the term “enshittification”, and I think it’s eventually not possible for the social media companies to continue to be profitable without hurting the user experience more and more.

It’s great to me that this stuff with reddit happened because more is gonna happen anyway. If they get to ipo, they’ll probably give more ads, they’ll probably try to push it even more as a tik tok/youtube shorts experience, which I still think those platforms overtake reddit on this field anyway.

I never thought a social media that isn’t for profit was possible and it’s exciting to me that it might be the direction we go in. I’m excited for both fediverse stuff and also the wikipedia non profit app “trust cafe” wt___something.

I would actually try to not subscribe to any beehaw communities if you’re not planning to be on beehaw since they’re defederating. I think that means anything you post on those communities can’t be seen by other servers?

You can browse on lemmyverse.net/communities for a list of every single (Lemmy-only) community.

There’s no equivalent browser site on kbin.

However, another way you can search and get pretty much/nearly all results is by using the community search on the large servers of lemmy and kbin. These large servers try to add every single community, so you can search for both kbin/lemmy communities on these

So for kbin, I use https://kbin.social/magazines
and you can search lemmy.world’s communities too. You can do searches on these even without an account

When’s the best time of the day to take Strattera?

I’m about to start this drug, but due to the side effects, I’m not sure if taking in the morning, lunchtime or dinner time is better. I don’t know exactly if I have adhd. It’s been hard for me to find a psychologist that’s accepting patients or accepts my insurance to make that formal diagnosis. I kind of made too many appointments, and I saw my general doctor and a nurse practitioner. At the general doctor, he for now let me try Strattera 40mg for a month and recommended this psychiatry clinic (but I recognized them and already knew they’re booked haha). A few days later was my appointment at a place called Bonmente and I saw a nurse practitioner, and she said I was showing signs of it but she wanted to see that I showed symptoms in childhood too (the only thing I could remember is losing stuff a lot/clumsy) and she wants to wait for my bloodwork from my general doctor to come in to make sure of (something, I don’t remember). (I asked my general doctor to do bloodwork since I try to eat mostly plant based stuff and test b12, iron, etc levels. ). For the childhood symptoms thing, she said she would look at this questionaire I filled out after our meeting for more. I filled it out last minute, so it wasn’t ready in their system during our meeting. She gave me a call a bit later saying she saw the questionaire and she wanted me to gain more weight due to stimulants often making you have less appetite. I don’t want to gain weight though, so I don’t know how I’ll proceed yet. I think I’m a little underweight, but I don’t think it’s that bad and would want to maintain the weight I have now (make myself eat even if medication would decrease appetite. I eat regularly and have a good appetite currently). I’m 5’1”, 95lb, 18.75 bmi now On the other hand, it’s kind of good she didn’t prescribe anything since now I’ll get to try strattera. I’d feel awkward having two of these medicines in my house haha. I’m scared of the side effect of not being able to sleep at night (I usually sleep well and need my 8 hrs), but at the same time, if it made me drowsy, maybe that’d be great for night time? I think I’m scared of morning/afternoon drowsiness because I use the drowsy benadryl for mild dust allergies, and it’s kinda scary how it knocks you out and you have no control of it. Also I never really eat breakfast (or if I do it’s never going to be a large meal), but straterra is best with food. Is it better if I take it after lunch/dinner? Though if I take it for lunch/dinner, is that too late in the day so that it keeps people up/unable to sleep?

Currently it's more work probably than it should be to do this, so for newer people, it's recommended they stay on large instances like lemmy.world or kbin.social to have the communities searchable.

If you're on a newer server, you can add the community you want.

Click Search (the site, not search for the community)
enter the whole url of the community you wanted - eg. https://kbin.social/m/Frenchies
Click enter and wait for a bit until it's able to find the community and you can hit subscribe button.

It's easy to do, but nothing on the UI helps you find the communities without extra knowledge, so if you're newer, it's a better experience to stay on the larger servers

I don't knoww haha, because I would have to check on the original instance, and most of the time I just subscribe and move on.
I think on kbin.social one of the developers is adding the new communities very quickly so the display name is based on the address one.

This is what it looks like on kbin.social - https://kbin.social/m/adhd@lemmy.dbzer0.com

When I do search on kbin.social however for a community, ones on lemmy won't show with the display name anyway I think; it will show the address like "adhd@lemmy.dbzer0.com"

I was able to find and add this community because of a reddit migration directory to show me this community is for adhdmemes :)

Sorry if it's not allowed to post like this (just lmk and I'll delete, or feel free to delete), but do you think it would be a good idea to rename this community to something like "adhdmeme"? I'm browsing from kbin.social, where the name is just "adhd", which makes it hard for me to differentiate if the post on my feed is coming from lighter forum, or if it's from this slightly more serious forum also called adhd (but from kbin)

But I guess it's weird it's not notifying you of my replies to you, it should at least do that. Oh I browse on mobile on the browser too. I think you can click the button with the 3 lines and click Subscribed instead of All to get your subs.

This is also janky atm, but if you want to see your list of the magazines you subscribed to, there actually is a way xD You click Profile, then there's a bunch of metrics (number of boosts you did, threads you made, etc. ), and you scroll to the right until you see "Subscribed". When you click that, it shows your magazines so you can go to them. I'm sure they'll make this a lot easier to get to in the future

    What notifications do you have?
    I have this
X Notify me of comments in my threads

X Notify me of replies to my threads comments

X Notify me of replies in my posts

X Notify me of replies to my posts comments

If you wanna see other kbin servers you can join, there's a list here https://kbin.fediverse.observer/list
kbin.place looks like it's in the US and has less people?

Is there an easy way to mass subscribe to many magazines on a new server though? I don't know how ernest added so many for kbin.social, but it would definitely help new members not have a tough time.

I made an account on a newer server for lemmy - lemmy.studio - and I have to say, having to manually add communities really just feels like an unneccessary step, and harder to do considering you'd have to search communities/magazines from both lemmy (https://lemmyverse.net/communities) and kbin (not sure if there's a site to search for magazines besides https://kbin.social/magazines)

A lot of people helped me with new tricks when I asked a similar question in a different post:

    https://kbin.social/m/fediverse/t/47139/Google-search-from-every-aggregator-on-the-fediverse

They said you can put quotes to it like
Pear “Join Lemmy” OR “Powered by kbin”

    • The “Join Lemmy” the commenter said, is on every lemmy server’s page, so it can help capture results from servers not following lemmy.*

    Pear site:lemmy.* OR site:kbin.*

    • would miss things from many servers not following this naming convention

I think as the top comment here said, there are tools people make to help search the fediverse. There will be a good way to search it if it did become very popular

so complicated :o that's true, it's kind of another con of making an account on and staying on a small instance then. If the instance makes its own communities, and the instance plans to stay small ish to be a lot of decentralized servers, then the content might not be well searchable for the small instance. idkkkk, it feels like there's pros of the fediverse, but then sometimes it's like a double edged sword or something.

Thanks for your answer. It's making sense to me. I do think this kind of thing might encourage more users to congregate on the large instances, but who knows, maybe it wouldn't be that bad if we continue making a new large instance if one fills up. Like how we have lemmy.ml, and now filling lemmy.world, and lemmy.world has a good experience.

I also am not entirely sure too how exactly the posts get populated, because I'm visiting some communities I added on that smaller server only a day ago, but it does show some posts from 7- 9 days ago (they don't have any new comments or anything), so yeah maybe I also don't completely understand how it works still. I added this one to the server I'm on - lemmy.studio - and I think I only added it today, but it's showing some from a few days ago: https://lemmy.studio/c/kbinMeta@kbin.social/data_type/Post/sort/Active/page/1

I don't know, I'm thinking they are probably about the same. Even though I'm trying both lemmy and kbin, I'm on a large kbin server and on a small lemmy server. I think that can make a bigger difference for the ignorant (me) than lemmy vs kbin. It can get kind of complicated to do some basic tasks, and I think it's good if these aggregators can make it easier to do.

For Kbin, I am liking the way they organize my feed, but I think you can customize your filter/sort on lemmy to do the same. Plus they have the android mobile app Jerboa, so I'm sure the experience for the feed can be good (don't have to keep resetting the filter the way I'm doing on browser [since I dont have an android phone])

Definitely feel free to make these accounts though :) It's been cool, like a big experiment to make these two accounts. I have one on lemmy.studio and kbin.social

that's fair, since the instance owners are hosting for us. The only thing is, I feel like the users might not know about this. I didn't really think about it until a little later that oh yeah, there is no [search for something "fediverse"] google search, and we're encouraged to join new instances and for the most part think of them as just servers to build the fediverse. I know I shouldn't try to box the fediverse ideas like reddit, but I am finding it frustrating that the decentralization is having these cons.

Yeah I'm honestly seeing this as a big turn off for users to join smaller instances, which is a goal many fediverse people want.
It really sucks that I made an account on a smaller instance for lemmy, and there were some technical difficulties/learning curve on my end to add a community (which I won't run into if I stay on a large instance), but then even after I did add the community, there are no posts. I made a lemmy account since it allows you to save posts, which kbin atm can't do. However, when I'm able to add the community on the lemmy account, there's none of the previous posts, so I can't save it.

Any way to see past posts of a newly added community?

Is there any way to get all the past posts of a community where I'm the first to subscribe/adding it to my instance? If there is, then that's really great, but if there isn't it's sounding like a con to me, of making an account on a newer instance.

I think the instances themselves don't feel much different (for example the UI for lemmy.world and lemmy.studio is like exactly the same), but I feel like maybe there needs to be some quality of life tools to help a new instance succeed with more ease.

    • Like it's hard to know that the instance exists, so it'd be nice if the UI makes signing up for one as easy as possible,
    • One big con at the moment too is it's actually kind of hard for me to find communities in a small instance. The large instances somehow people already added like all of them, so I can search for pretty much all of them. I think to encourage joining new instances, ideally should give the creator an easy way to like just add every single community across different aggregators. Maybe even a bot that just automatically does this so it doesn't have to be updated, or at least give the creator of that instance that option if they so choose
    • Give easy way to migrate account. For example today I just learned about a website with a list of the kbin servers, and thought maybe I should move from kbin.social to put less strain on it. However, I made my kbin.social account with my gmail, and I prefer to be lazy and just log in through gmail. I can't make a new account on say kbin.chat with that same gmail account actually, so I'd have to use another email account, and I didn't want to do that. Also in my 2 days on kbin, I made a community, and if I just abandon my kbin.social account, I don't know who would be the "mod" of that community now. There's already some data I'd like to not have to start over on

oh, maybe it's cuz I'm on a less populated server for lemmy. I'm on lemmy.studio and it's been good, but it's actually really hard to know about any non-lemmy communities. I believe you can only search up "Redditmigration" on lemmy.world since someone already did the initial work to subscribe to it. On lemmy.studio, most of even the lemmy communities aren't on there yet, but at least the lemmy browser will let you see what's out there, so you can know to do the work to be the first to subscribe to it on that less populated server. However, there would be no way to know about the kbin communities if all I'm looking at is that lemmy browser

I'm guessing kbin would have the same issue( but im on a popular server there, kbin.social, so I can't confirm. Everything here, like you has been searchable for me probably cuz it's big so people have already subscribed)

I think there needs to be an easier way to see communities/magazines across aggregators because I see the lemmy browse sites for communities won't show any kbin magazines, which I think will only hurt the point of decentralizing but being able to access all the content in the fediverse.

I'm not sure if kbin actually suffers the same way, because I'm on kbin.social which I'm guessing just already has all the current lemmy communities added. But if there's a new lemmy community, and no one added it to kbin.social (how would they find out?) then no one will find out if this lemmy community blows up and becomes really popular right?

okay the only thing is, I'm not sure if it's a good idea to keep making instance names that don't start with kbin.___ because then if kbin/lemmy really do take off, it would be so hard to google search for them. You can't do the site:kbin.* search if those instances with different names make magazines/communities and you can't find them with that google filter

The only thing that'd be cool is if these community browsers could add the search for other communities as well, like for the kbin aggregator's communities. There's one called RedditMigration (https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration or @RedditMigration) that has more than 250 posts, and it's started on kbin.social. It would be cool to be able to search more easily other communities so that it's easier to find the content on the fediverse.

Kbin can improve its community search too but I am finding it easier to know about other communities not on kbin on its search. Whereas, on lemmy, maybe it's because I'm on a lower population instance, but it's very hard to find a community if it's not on lemmy, and I didn't already just know about it from the kbin account

How to add new communities on a less populated instance?

Will anyone explain how communities become available for members of an instance to see/be able to subscribe to? I joined a smaller instance on lemmy, but I'm having trouble finding some communities. Eg. "nostupidquestions" shows no results, so I think someone needed to have added it? But I'm not sure who

Add another sort to the magazines section to sort by number of threads (to help find magazines from other aggregators)

Sorry if this isn't the right place to add this post. If I've put it in the wrong place, feel free to let me know the correct magazine. I noticed that the on the list of Magazines section here: [https://kbin.social/magazines](https://kbin.social/magazines), the "hot" tab shows mostly the kbin magazines. This made me sometimes subscribe to a magazine where the other aggregator like Lemmy already had a duplicate(same purpose). The kbin version of the magazine shows up first since it has more subscribers, even though the other version on Lemmy has more Threads. One example I can give is the magazines/communities Anime@kbin.social and anime@lemmy.ml. When I search for "anime", and sort by "hot", the kbin version shows up first even though it has about half as many threads because it has much more subscribers. I guess what I'm trying to say is, maybe it would be nice if I could sort the list of Magazines by number of threads too, rather than only the number of subscribers. After all, the anime@lemmy.ml has like 3000 subscribers on lemmy.ml, but it has only 200 on kbin. If I could sort by number of threads a magazine has, then I might be able to find the other options of magazines. I thought there was only one magazine for "gaming" but actually there are two, and they cover the same exact topic. If I only subscribed to the "gaming" on kbin, then I would be missing out on the content from lemmy users. It might help get more unified on the fediverse. It's great if there's two "gaming" communities/mags that cover different things, but I think for this case, people would want to be able to see the threads/posts from both (and ideally not have to subscribe to both to not miss out due to misunderstanding)

How can I add a community that's from kbin?

How can I add a community that's from kbin? Also, if I add a community from a different aggregator like kbin to my lemmy account, will that make it available for everyone on lemmy to find?

Google search from every aggregator on the fediverse?

I've heard you can do a google search and append say kbin.social to get results just from kbin, but if I wanted to treat the fediverse's content like reddit's, is there a way to do the google search on just everything that's on the fediverse? edit: I've been hearing people will want to make search tools to help us search the fediverse, and in the future even give us options on our servers to opt out of being indexed if we want. Also this is a search site someone else recommended where you can choose which search engine to search the fediverse: [https://fedi-search.com](https://fedi-search.com)
