The means of production would not just be yourself but also other work tools. A basic desk job wouldn't really fall under this condition, since you usually don't have control over your computer or the software running in it, for example. I couldn't think of any example of a service job where all the work tools are worker controlled right now.

Also, at least in the EU, the laws have not just banned public straws but also a bunch of other single-use, non-degradable items. Plastic cutlery, qtips, and takeout food containers were banned too or severely limited. And there've been a lot of improvements that incentivise reusable containers over throwaway ones too.

Ausdenken darf man sich als Firma diese Interessen auch nicht einfach so. Es gibt dazu einen Abschnitt im Anhang der DSGVO, der das genauer erläutert. Man muss auf jeden Fall genau begründen können, warum ein berechtigtes Interesse vorliegt. Im Grunde sollen unter diesen Begriff alle Datenverarbeitungen, die nicht für den bestimmten Zweck (für den du als User den Service benutzt) gebraucht werden, aber trotzdem für die Aufrechterhaltung des Services notwendig sind. Trotzdem gibt es keine Themenbegrenzung, weshalb das, was Firmen als berechtigtes Interesse bezeichhnen, oft sehr willkürlich erschient. Ich kenne von meiner Arbeit z.B. folgende Dinge, die darunter fallen können:

• IT-Sicherheit (z.B. das Lokalisieren von IP-Adressen gegen Spam/DDoS )
• Vermeidung von Betrug (z.B. durch Weitergabe von Kundendaten an die Schufa)
• "Direktmarketing" (d.h. Adresssammlung fürs Zuschicken von postalischer nicht-personalisierter Werbung)

... der übrigens ein feststehender Rechtsbegriff aus der DSGVO ist. Nur fallen da alle mögliche Sachen drunter, weshalb die Verwendung super verwirrend ist.

Minimalism as a design trend dates back to the beginning of the last century, but you might have noticed that companies have extensively used minimalist principles in their product design in the past few years. Apple is especially known for this, but you see it everywhere nowadays. Cars, fridges, TVs... they are all stripped of any extravagant design features: fewer buttons, no ornaments, single colors, and so on. Even if you are not designer, you have probably noticed that in some way.

The instance is almost 3.5 years old btw, which you can easily see from the instance admin account @itteam@social.bund.de. It just wasn't used by many government departments at the time, mostly the data protection agency and the BSI. The @ltrlp@social.bund.de account itself is pretty old too. It dates back to before the whole Twitter debacle. I guess that's also part of the reason why they decided to go full Mastodon, since they already have a lot of experiences with it.

Und selbst wenn sie existieren, wäre eine Analyse oder gar kritische Betrachtung ein Affront gegen die selbstauferlegt journalistische Neutralität, die jedoch nur gegenüber dem Status Quo existiert. "Wie konnte das denn passieren???!" ist die große Frage, die in Deutschland oft gestellt, aber wenig beantwortet wird.

Matrix is also decentralized/federated, has encryption integrated into the protocol and enjoys a broad adoption and public support. It also has pretty good integration of bots and even other message protocol services like IRC via "bridges". The chat clients are pretty good too; Element is pretty much available for every platform but there's other one's which are more focussed on Desktop or mobile usage, depending on how you primarily use it.

I'm pretty sure there is no particular reason why it's done this way. It's just the easiest method to coomunicate upvotes across different servers. There are already a lot of ideas for doing it differently or more efficient (e.g. vote aggregation) but that requires a more sophisticated architecture:

• Vote aggregation also makes faking votes much more efficient and requires different detection methods. Of course, a spam server can also invent users or votes but it's a bit more complicated.
• Aggregation in any form can be hard to implement because it should be flexible enough to reduce load but not increase delay or make tracking a consistent state even harder. Finding the right configuration will be difficult and go through a lot of trial and error. Should be easier though now that more people are working on the code.
• Keep in mind that Lemmy should also be able to communicate with other services across the Fediverse like Mastodon via ActivityPub. I'm not sure if there is something in the standard for message aggregation yet. It's definitely being discussed because Mastodon, Pixelfed and Peertube all have or went thorugh the same growth problems as Lemmy in terms of scaling, spam and security concerns. If there's a good solution it will likely come through the AP standard.

You can @ people from Mastodon and it will notify them. If someone from Mastodon replies here in a Lemmy thread, replies from Lemmy will also appear on Mastodon.

It's a bit clunky at the moment because Mastodon cannot distinguish between communities and users here on Lemmy (both show up as users on Mastodon). It will probably get better when https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/19059 gets implemented.

Unknackbar auf dem Papier ja, in der Praxis gibt es aber zu jedem Schritt im Algorithmus 1000 Möglichkeiten wie man diesen unsicher/falsch implementiert. Zudem kommst auch drauf an, wie du den Algorithmus in der Anwendung einsetzt. Da gibt's jede Menge Fallstricke und als Einzelperson kannst du das kaum alles beachten.

Das ist eben die große Frage: Ob dieser Quellcode dann noch frei verfügbar sein kann oder darf und was mit europäischen Projekten, die sowas entwickeln, passiert. Vieles läuft ja auch über öffentliche Forschung an Universitäten, z.B. die NaCl Bibliothek, eine der meist eingesetzten Kryptobibliotheken in Messengern. Wenn diese nicht mehr öffentlich entwickelt werden können oder die Finanzierung wegfällt, ware das ein nicht-endener Sicherheitsalbtraum.

Ansonsten blieben doch nur die im Artikel angesprochenen Hardware-Backdoors, oder?

Es gibt noch mehrere Abstufungen vor der Hardware-Ebene, z.B. über Schadsoftware in der Bootsoftware oder Manipulation des eingesetzten Zufallszahlengenerators auf Betriebssystemebene. Die meisten Ideen sind auch nicht wirklich neu, sondern nur aufgewärmte Konzepte aus den 90ern.

Dieses "Atomkraft mit Kohle ersetzt" ist aber auch so ein Märchen, was immer noch rumgeistert, aber dadurch nicht wahrer wird. Kohlekraftwerke weiterlaufen lassen war nie der Plan der Grünen und Atomkraftwerke vor Kohlekraftwerken ebenso wenig. Mal ganz abgesehen davon, dass Atomkraft eh nicht gut mit einem erneuerbaren Strommix wie in DE funktionieren würde. Einfach so weiterlaufen lassen wäre nie eine Option gewesen.

Für die Nicht-Techniker hier: Eigentlich ist es ganz im Sinne der Firmen, wenn externe Sicherheitsforscher ihnen Schwachstellen melden. Dann kann man nämlich die Lücke fixen bevor etwas schlimmes passiert und es peinlich wird.

In diesem Fall hat die betroffene Firma "Modern Solutions" jedoch eine nicht ganz so moderne Lösung gefunden und stattdessen die Sicherheitsforscher nach der Meldung angezeigt, was ungefähr so sinnvoll ist, wie jemanden als Brandstifter anzuzeigen, weil er die Feuerwehr gerufen hat. In Deutschland ist sowas leider möglich, wegen dem ziemlich schlechten "Hackerparagraph" §202a StG.

Das Urteil des Gerichts ist in diesem Fall besonders interessant, weil sie im Grunde gesagt haben, dass das Finden der Sicherheitslücke nicht strafbar war, da man sie zu einfach ausnutzen konnte. Dementsprechend war das System gar nicht richtig gegen Einbruch abgesichert und konnte deshalb auch schlecht gehackt worden sein. Finde ich eine ganz nette Begründung, weil es der Firma jetzt zum zweiten Mal bestätigt, wie schlecht ihre Security ist :D
