It's always projection. They pre-empt criticism by taking whatever words are (rightly) being directed at them or could be used against them in the future and just flipping them around, making them lose their original meaning in the eyes of their adherents.

If you're actually serious, literally just google voter turnout numbers in texas. Also look at how close some races were and compare that to the nonvoting registered voter population. I've seen several analyses of that recently

Here is the TX government record of voter turnout: https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/historical/70-92.shtml

Here is the TX government reporting of election results: https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/historical/presidential.shtml

2020 Presidential: 66% turnout, 52% of the VAP (voting age population) voted. Trump won by 600k votes, 4.5M of VAP was not registered.

2018 Senatorial: 53% turnout, 42% of VAP turned out. Ted "I posted incest porn on twitter on 9/11" Cruz won by 215k, 4.1M of VAP was not registered.

2018 Gubernatorial: 53% turnout, 42% of VAP turned out. Abbott won by 1.1M, 4.1M of VAP was not registered.

2016 Presidential: 59% turnout, 46% of VAP turned out. Trump won by 800k votes, 4.2M of VAP was not registered.

2012 Presidential: 59% turnout, 44% of VAP turned out. Romney won by 1.2M, 4.6M of VAP was not registered.

2008 Presidential: 60% turnout, 46% of VAP turned out. McCain won by 900k, 4.2M of VAP was not registered.

2004 Presidential: 56% turnout, 47% of VAP turned out. Bush won by 1.7M, 3M of VAP was not registered

2000 Presidential: total blowout for Bush, no two ways about it. He might have plunged us in to a 20 year long war and completely ravished innocent civilians in the middle east, but dont you just want to have a beer with the guy?

Why people aren'tregistered source 44% do not care, 27% intended to register but didn't, 11% are paranoid about voter roles, 9% say it isn't convenient (and Republicans sure have made it inconvenient), and 6% literally don't know how to register. From that same article and polling data, 35% of unregistered voters do not believe their vote will affect the political process, and 30% don't think it'll change election results. AND 40% of these care who wins political races, but don't vote.

These races are not close compared to the number of non-registered VAP. Young people are more left-leaning and show up to the polls at shockingly low rates. Minorities are typically more likely to vote Dem, but turn out at lower rates (partially due to disenfranchisement). If the non-voters voted, many races of the past 30+ years would've been close or Dem.

How bad this was depends on how "great" was framed. Hitler was a failed art student and low ranking infantryman who was let into the military (possibly by mistake) after failing his physical examination.

By 1939 (age 50), he had taken control of the German state and was soon after made a dictator by the Enabling Act, killed many of his political rivals openly in the Night of Long Knives, re-armed the German military after the treaty of Versailles totally gutted it, been given Austria, invaded the Sudetenland, kicked off the holocaust with Kristalnacht, signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and occupied Poland - taking it in 3 weeks, and was at war with Britain/Australia/New Zealand (soon to be at war with everyone else).

"Great" doesn't necessarily mean "good" or "morally correct." Great can mean "person who has changed a lot of things" without making any moral judgment about that - think "great man of history" (not very materialist, I know). By that metric, obviously Hitler was "great" - even pre-WW2 and pre-Holocaust he had already radically changed global politics, had terrified much of Europe, radicalized a huge portion of the German people, and was set to potentially make a huge comeback from Germany's defeat in WW1.

Or they could just be a bunch of nazis over there at Princeton. That is also very possible.

Maybe modify hexblade or something to turn ranged spells into melee spells and make damage less consistent but slightly larger - that could be fun. Or you don't even really need a damage debuff because being melee only would be a big disadvantage. Maybe melee-optional, but there's a greater payoff in terms of damage if you melee cast a ranged spell...

Not everyone with sense. The question was if Harris is electable, if the dems would rally behind her instead of infighting, and if there was enough time to spin up a campaign. Biden was previously electable, had the majority of dems supporting him, and didn't need to spin up a campaign.

Now, in hindsight, Kamala was the right choice. She's been great and people have responded well. But that was by no means a sure thing

In home ec class in middle school we watched a food network video about making stuffed hotdogs where they took a straw and cored a hotdog out and then filled it with white, melted cheese from a piping bag. They squeezed too hard and it jetted out the other end and the camera was perfectly positioned to catch the hotdog's thick ropes. Then they played it back in slo motion. The class was very amused.

4chan, in part, ruined real life. So much of the initial meme buzz around Trump came directly from 4chan - god emperor, etc. /b/ and /pol/ had large coordinated campaigns to boost Trump for lulz and to fuck with people. These made the news occasionally and were sometimes quite wide-reaching. Edit: not to forget Qanon, pizzagate, etc.

Additionally, 4chan is responsible for a massive swathe of meme culture more broadly. Most people don't dredge its depths or even know "the hacker named 4chan" exists, but it has been a massively influential force.

First you have to ask what gender is. Gender is a set of behaviors expected of people of a given sex.

Then, you have to ask what it means to belong to a given gender. You don't have to, and can't, meet all the behavioral expectations of a given gender. Those expected behaviors change over time. People of all sexes have interests that cross gendered lines because gender is not perfectly correlated to specific behaviors - instead it is a broad notion of behaviors that are considered to correlate with a given sex.

Additionally, there exist people who are not really male or female due to genetic differences. But, society typically treats them as the gender typically assigned to the sex they most resemble. So, since they do not have the "correct" sex and may not participate in the "correct" behaviors to belong to a given gender, their assigned gender is arbitrarily determined.

Those 3 things establish that gender is: not biological, not behaviorally determined, and somewhat arbitrary.

Since gender isn't biological, woman =/= female person

Since gender isn't behaviorally determined, woman =/= someone who engages in typically feminine behaviors

Since gender is at least partially arbitrary, woman =/= a factual category that can be determined by material features of a person

If women don't have to be female or engage in typically feminine activities and can't be defined by physical or genetic characteristics, then what is left? Someone who identifies as a woman - who wants to be treated as a woman by others.

"But that's circular!!!" It actually isn't. "Woman" as a category confers societal roles and expected behaviors onto a person, "woman" as a person just means someone who belongs to the category "Woman". The only determining factor is being a member of the category. It'd be like asking "what is a boy scout?", getting "a member of the boy scouts" as an answer, and then being upset that there isn't some fundamental universal law being appealed to when classifying people as boy scouts.

Nah. Obviously, you'd talk beforehand, and no one would be forced to use it. It's no different than arranged dates through a matchmaker. Now, there'd be valid privacy and ethics concerns - especially if your ML model is racist. But that's a whole different thing. People are often quite bad at picking good matches for themselves, and computers are great at pattern ID and so potentially good at finding matches.

I've seen many more coffee folks who have opinions ranging from "it doesn't taste different than the local coffee" to "it tastes downright bad". James Hoffmann has a good video on it: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=pkbuFwHnJQY

Primary thing seems to be the quality of the coffee cherries the civet eats. So if it's just force-fed coffee cherries, it'll be no better than normal coffee. If it gets to choose on it's own, naturally, then it may pick better coffee cherries and the coffee may be better - but not because of the digestive process, most likely.

The problem is that it doesn't actually taste good. It's the labor-intensive and "exotic" manufacturing process that makes the coffee so expensive, not its quality.

I mean... maybe in this case? I feel like profile/picture based matchmaking is something an ML model could be pretty good at in theory. Match people based on physical preferences and attractiveness (get head scans and frontal & profile full body shots), basic demographic/location/financial info, fill out a questionnaire with hobbies, political views, sexual preferences, etc.

Do that for groups of satisfied pre-existing couples first to train the model on, then continue training the model on the successful matches from the app. Have it spit out X number of matches that have the highest ratings for all users, limit it to X matches per time period to limit "swiping" behaviors, then let users talk/date and provide feedback to the app about what they did/didn't like.

Obviously, it would need major privacy protections given how sensitive the info is, but that'd be a way better system than Tinder and the like. Like a super powered robo matchmaker serving up the highest probability matches.

I want a NAS solution to back up my PC and host media files, but prebuilt NAS solutions are incredibly expensive and underwhelming and so I'm planning to build one. Does anyone have recommendations for a NAS interface? I'm brand new to server management and would prefer something user friendly. I have used linux mint, but currently use windows as my daily driver (planning to switch to mint soon). I'd be fine with a dedicated NAS OS or with something I could run on mint since I'm already familiar with that distro.

Amazing. You don't think that a system for individualized pricing would take demographics into account? Brilliant! You should take your thesis on how demographics don't affect consumers' willingness to pay to every ad agency on earth. They'll be riveted. Or is it that you don't think race and SES are correlated? In that case you should hurry to publish a book on economics before someone steals your idea.

It'd probably be the opposite. I bet they'd charge more to specific demographics - and common convenience store beverage brands would probably cost more for poorer people.

Plus, without controls, they'd probably end up charging different ethnic groups more for specific goods - they'd probably obfuscate it somehow, like to charge white people more for something they'd probably say they were doing it because you're a model train enthusiast or something. Or like "our consultants have told us that Tejano music fans are willing to pay a premium for coca cola" and so they jack up the price of coca cola for Mexicans without saying it's because they're mexican.

But yeah, I bet poorer people who have less free time would be "willing" to pay more for essentials because they often have less choice in where they get groceries. In other words you could force poor people with fewer options to accept jacked up prices whereas non-poor people may have the luxury of shopping around or paying someone else to get their groceries.

Also, if poor people were charged less there'd be a whole industry of personal grocery shoppers who'd get discounted prices for rich people and charge them a service fee in exchange.

That isn't really how the judging worked though. First they had a huge panel of judges - 9 of them. And they judge them on 5 criteria: technique, vocabulary, execution, musicality, and originality. It is qualitative, but it's a comparative rating system with actual guidelines - so they each simply have to decide who did each thing better:

Maintaining physiological control while focusing on athleticism, form and spatial awareness.

The range of moves that display variation and the quantity of moves, ideally with minimal repetition.

The ability to land and perform moves smoothly, without falls or slips and while maintaining consistency and flow.

The ability to stay on beat, syncing movements to the rhythm of the music.

The capacity for improvisation, creativity and maintaining spontaneity with style and personality.

I don't think breaking necessarily needs to be in the olympics, but we're past the point of only allowing sports (looking at you, dressage) and we do have other artistic events (rhythmic gymanstics and synchro swimming). And, the scoring system for breaking was reasonable and able to determine valid winners.

Afaik the IOC did all the standard testing on her and didn't find any issues (no doping, normal testosterone levels, etc). Idk if they did a genetic sex test - I'd imagine that isn't standard. Is that correct? Regardless of the Russian-run boxing federation's intentions, I'd still trust the IOC's findings over theirs.

Plus, even if she was XXY or something, does that actually have any impact on athletic performance? I'd imagine not

Edi: yep. Looks like it is widely believed that having a y chromosome is unfair, but the science doesn't necessarily back that up.

"improved understanding about genetic factors that lead to selection in sport should offer reassurance that female athletes with hyperandrogenism do not possess any physical attribute relevant to athletic performance that is neither attainable, nor present in other women."

"Ancient Wisdom" applied stupidly can indeed lead to shit takes. In this case, you're criticizing this politician because... he didn't give halloween handouts proportional to his income? His halloween candy bars weren't a sufficiently significant sacrifice? And then you're knocking this commenter because their opinion that your take is shit means they are blinded by the "systems of exploitation" they create as an engineer and their lack courage to share your moral views about the virtue of dispensing halloween candy proportional to ones wealth? You're like a charicature of a cringey philosophy major - and I was a philosophy major. Stop pontificating and think logically about your argument.

Look at Protestants in America "interpreting" their "ancient wisdom" in all sorts of wacky ways. The Baptists' "ancient wisdom" tells them they'll go to hell if they dance. The pentacostals' "ancient wisdom" says that the Holy Spirit will possess you and make you speak gibberish if you believe hard enough. The "christian science" people's ancient wisdom tells them to pray cancer away - and if they fail to, it's because they aren't righteous enough.

Just because you can loosely relate some "ancient wisdom" to a situation doesn't mean that it's applicable or that you're correct.

My wisdom would tell me that this guy's halloween handouts don't really say anything about him other than either that he: just likes giving out halloween candy, sees it as a smart political move, or both.

Walz is from Minnesota. Minnesota is in the Midwest. Some people in the Midwest have a unique and rather quaint dialect and accent, as well as a very friendly culture.

"'Ope" is an exclamation akin to "Oops", and is often said when a Midwesterner may have accidentally bothered someone in some way (e.g. bumping into them accidentally).

This exlamation is often followed up by "sorry boutcha" to form the iconic phrase: "Ope! Sorry boutcha!" Which is basically the folksy, Midwestern equivalent of "I beg your pardon".

Ope has beocme an iconic, memetic symbol of Midwestern identity, culture, and stereotypical friendliness.

Because it's a pretty solemn place... the guide was explaining how men, women, kids were burned - some alive - in these ovens because the Nazis didn't want to waste bullets or spend extra time on corpse disposal, and these middle aged dudes bust out their phones while the guy is talking and start taking pictures of the inside of the ovens with flash.

Maybe you have to have been there. The atmosphere at Auschwitz is incredibly heavy given all the terrible things that happened there. Everyone seemed pretty appalled at these guys' behavior. I was just a teenager, but I was pretty shocked.

I saw groups of highschool kids laughing and joking around at Dachau and lots of amateur insta models doing their little photoshoots. On a tour of Auschwitz, we got to the oven room and some older dudes immediately started snapping pictures of the ovens and were told to stop. Cameras on phones and constant access to social media have broken people's brains

Fair enough! It can be a little harder to hit consistently in practice depending on the level of variety in your diet, if you go out occasionally, etc. In my opinion and personal experience, anyway. But that is a solid and reasonable meal plan without a doubt.

The raspberries example was more an example of if one were to "fibermax" as the kids will be saying in 20yrs. Trying to most efficiently achieve the RDA with the most fiber dense foods possible - not intended as an actual, reasonable diet.

Throwing up almost every class. Is there anything I can do about it?

Pretty much the title. I've been training for 5 months, injured for 4 weeks in there - just came off of a 2wk recovery from a knee injury. I'm relatively young, 6ft 175lbs, in pretty decent shape. But I overexert myself to the point of vomiting nearly every class. It's frustrating and embarassing. I've started doing more cardio and have improved a lot in that regard, but it doesn't seem to help at all on the mats. Do I just need to do more cardio? Is there something nutrition-wise that could help? Open to any and all suggestions. Edit: Thanks everyone for the advice. I will try 1) not try so hard and ask partners to help me with that, 2) advice to talk to my doctor - I have in the past and he wasn't much help - but it got me to do some research... some medication I'm on can cause hyponatremia, which can cause nausea and vomiting especially after exercise... so I'm going to try a saline solution before/during class and may report back if it works. Edit 2: took a 3% hypertonic salt solution to class today and it seems to have worked. I asked a higher belt to really push me in a difficult roll after class to test it. Not certain yet, but seems to have fixed the vomiting

    Opinions on 9x9 for beginners

I have been playing Go with my friend (who has a Chess background) for a while now. We started on 19x19 boards but he found it really overwhelming and struggled. He wanted to switch to 9x9 and we have now played several 9x9 games. These games are just for fun and I don't think he has much intention of ever playing seriously, so it doesn't really matter, but I feel like the skils developed playing 9x9 are really not all that applicable to a real game other than just basic life/death, some endgame stuff, etc. I started on a full sized board, and I ran a successful club where we started beginners off on full sized boards, so I don't really know how others do it. What do you think about starting beginners off on 9x9? When do you think they should transition to larger boards?

How do you use AI to train?

I've been using AI to review my games for a while, but how do you personally use AI to learn? I've found it really helpful in strengthening my joseki as well as general game-sense/intuition. Re-training myself on which moves *feel* correct. One weird result has been that a lot of my intuitions that I used to brush away in favor of moves that I felt were more *big-brained*, turned out to be the moves that the AI prefers. So I'm having to work through when I'm overthinking moves. The main problem I find is that it is so much better than I am that I can't understand the logic sometimes - so I walk away with "Well, that move was just better, I guess" and fail to get a good understanding.

Go in Art: Guan Yu plays Go during bone surgery

Portrayal of the Physician Hua Da Scraping the Bone of Guan Yu to Treat an Arrow Wound (Hua Da hone o kezurite Guan Yu ya-kizu o ryoji suru zu), Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1853 "Guan Yu was once injured in the left arm by a stray arrow which pierced through his arm. Although the wound healed, he still experienced pain in the bone whenever there was a heavy downpour. A physician told him, "The arrowhead had poison on it and the poison had seeped into the bone. The way to get rid of this problem is to cut open your arm and scrape away the poison in your bone." Guan Yu then stretched out his arm and asked the physician to heal him. He then invited his subordinates to dine with him while the surgery was being performed. Blood flowed from his arm into a container below. Throughout the operation, Guan Yu feasted, consumed alcohol and chatted with his men as though nothing had happened." [(Wikipedia)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guan_Yu)

Go in Art: Minamoto no Yorimitsu and His Retainers Defeat the Earth Spider ids.lib.harvard.edu

I'm not entirely sure how Go plays into this story, but it's a wild print that shows Minamoto no Yorimitsu, who had apparently been in the middle of a game of Go, fighting the legendary [Yōkai Tsuchigumo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsuchigumo) (土蜘蛛, i.e. Earth/Dirt Spider), a giant spider demon that lives in the earth. I'm not sure why so many fights broke out while samurai were playing Go in feudal Japan. But, Minamoto no Yorimitsu is Minamoto no Yoshitsune's (whose retainer, [Sato Tadanobu](https://www.fujiarts.com/cgi-bin/item.pl?item=853668), beat a bunch of samurai to death with a floor goban) great, great, great, great, great uncle (5th great uncle), so it must run in the family.

The history behind the community banner and a little piece of Go lore: Sato Tadanobu Bravely Resisting Arrest en.wikipedia.org

First published in 1855, Sato Tadanobu Bravely Resisting Arrest (左藤忠信勇戦芳時が勢を移る圖) depicts a man fighting off a number of attackers with a Goban. But who was he and what is his story? Satō Tadanobu (佐藤 忠信) was a samurai in service of Minamoto no Yoshitsune who lived between 1161AD and 1186AD. There are two accounts of his death, but which one is real may not be as important to us as which makes for the better story. The first part of the story is the same in both accounts and is recorded in the Gikeiki (義経記, or Chronicle of Yoshitsune) and involves Tadanobu retreating with his master Minamoto no Yoshitsune's forces to Kyushu, fleeing the advance of his half-brother Minamoto no Yoritomo's army. Sato, serving as rearguard with a few of his men, aided the retreat by donning Yoshitsune's armor and, acting in disguise as Yoshitsune, killing twenty of his pursuers. Though his companions died in the fight, Tadanobu escaped and continued on to Kyoto to take refuge in the house of a woman he knew there. This is where the stories diverge, and where the subject of this painting comes from: Telling #1: While staying at his acquaintance's house, he was discovered and attacked. He committed seppuku before he could be captured alive. Telling #2: Sato Tadanobu was enjoying a game of Go at his acquaintance's house, when he was suddenly attacked by Yoritomo's men. Unable to reach his weapons, he grabbed the Goban he was playing on and proceeded to single-handedly beat a number of armed and armored samurai to death with it before he was able to reach his weapons and commit seppuku, thus evading capture by the overwhelming force. In the Kabuki plays (such as Yoshino Shizuka Goban Tadanobu and Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura) and Ukiyo prints inspired by this event, Tadanobu is implied to be a Genkurō (fox spirit) due to his cunning impersonation of Yoshitsune.

Go Problem Tree for Absolute Beginner to Double Digit Kyu (30k - 10k) - Like Duolingo for Go gomagic.org

I found Gomagic from the YouTube channel of the same name. It's a really nice way to do high to mid-kyu Go problems (there's a 9k - 1k section under development too). They have a wide variety of types and it walks you through a bunch of different skills. The downside is you only get a limited number of free problem sets each day if you don't pay for a subscription, but it's like 15 free sets of 5-6 problems per day or something pretty generous.
