Dragon's Dogma

Anyone else excited about Dragons Dogma and the upcoming Dragons Dogma 2 game? I am trying to get some people who want to talk about either Dragon’s Dogma game to join the Lemmy version group in the Fediverse. I am currently playing through the first game on my Linux gaming PC. We can share news there. We can share pawns too, if anyone is interested. @dragons\_dogma

Is there any way to play the games I installed in windows in Linux?

I'm looking to try out Linux, but I don't want to have to re install all my games for it. I've got a 500 GB boot drive, and a 2tb where all my games are. I'd install Linux on a 250 GB partition of the boot drive. ty all :)

Dusk HD announced (native)

The blurb: "[DUSK HD](https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/519860/view/3708208311606937836) is now a FULL VISUAL REMASTER OF DUSK. We have remade every enemy, every weapon, every model, every texture, EVERY THING. FOR YOU. FOR FREE. YOU'RE WELCOME. We still have some work to do! But expect a full ON / OFF style comparison trailer around Halloween. Then full launch with the SDK + Steam Workshop around DUSK's 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY in December. The HD models, textures, weapons, etc will all be available on the Steam Workshop as free downloads and not integrated into the base game until you install them! This is all completely optional! IF YOU LIKE DUSK JUST HOW IT IS THAT'S GREAT! And YES you WILL be able to use both the old and these new assets to create anything you want with the SDK and upload your own creations to the workshop as well. We can't wait to see it. Because DOOM may be Eternal but DUSK is FOREVER. ...Or something."

AMDVLK 2023.Q3.2 Released With Quadbuffer Stereo, Quake 2 RTX Optimizations www.phoronix.com

AMD used to release new AMDVLK Vulkan driver updates on a near weekly basis for Linux users but that has slowed down for a while. We are approaching the end of Q3 and now AMDVLK 2023.Q3.2 has been published as their first new open-source driver release since early August. With the time that has passed since the prior release, AMDVLK 2023.Q3.2 is at least on the heavier side for changes. AMDVLK 2023.Q3.2 brings support for quadbuffer stereo, Quake 2 RTX ray-tracing performance tuning, reducing the RS64 vs. FP32 mode overhead, reducing the AMDVLK binary size, and other optimizations. [New features and improvement] * Update Khronos Vulkan Headers to 1.3.261 * Support Quadbuffer Stereo * Performance tuning for Quake2 RTX RT * Reduce RS64 vs F32 mode overhead * Add a setting to allow changing PWS mode * Reduce amdvlk binary size * Optimize the clear to single shaders * Support dynamic sample buffer info for Extended\_dynamic\_state3 extension [Issues fixed] * Driver still reports HDR formats even when HDR mode is disabled * CTS failure in dEQP-VK.pipeline.monolithic.executable\_properties.graphics.vertex\_stage\* * vkCreateRenderPass2 Crash * Debug markers missing in RGD

Tips for running starfield via Steam and Proton

If it is helpful to others, I was able to get Starfield to work with Steam with my AMD system. I understand that folks using AMD cards have generally had a lot more success; this probably won't help nvidia users. I'm using Kubuntu 22.04.3 LTS, an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X CPU, and AMD RX 6800 XT video card. I'm not a big fan of using PPA repos, but I am using the Mesa 23.1.8 libraries from kisak-mesa PPA. I am using experimental proton in Steam. My symptom was that Starfield would install and load, but crash trying to start a new game. /var/log/kern.log had errors similar to 'Waiting for fences timed out' and 'ERROR failed to halt cp gfx'. The latest kernel from Canonical available via apt is 5.15.0.84. What solved the problem for me was a newer kernel. I did this today, so I was successful by building 6.5.4. Be careful: your mileage may vary here and installing a new kernel comes with risks. Backing up your system is always a good idea. I've found that as long as I leave known stable kernels available in my grub boot-loader, this isn't scary - I can reboot and select the safe kernel. However, if you're uncomfortable troubleshooting and don't have a second system to search for help and answers, give your recovery strategy some thought before proceeding. I've found that this guide is a nice straightforward one for building and installing a new kernel: [https://phoenixnap.com/kb/build-linux-kernel](https://phoenixnap.com/kb/build-linux-kernel) I deviate from this guide in two ways (I'm not being super verbose here - you may have to figure some of this out or search for more info, but I hope it will get you going in a direction): 1. make will almost certainly fail due to not being able to sign the new kernel. *Side note: make is verbose. If it fails, it may not be clear why. Try running it a second time to get a more succinct message of what is failing.* The linked guide suggests working around the cert errors by disabling secure booting in the kernel. Instead, I installed the source for my current kernel (e.g. `apt-get install linux-source-5.15.0`) and copied over the certificates I needed. For example: `cp -v /usr/src/linux-source-5.15.0/debian/canonical*.pem ~/newkernelsource/debian/` `cp -v /usr/src/linux-source-5.15.0/debian/certs/* ~/newkernelsource/debian/certs/` 2. You can allow make to run multiple jobs concurrently, which can reduce the build time. Just ensure it is fewer jobs than you have cores. I have 24 cores, so I use something like: `make -j 20` After rebooting with the new kernel, the game fired right up. Hope this helps someone.

In case you consider using the AMD `pstate` frequency scaling driver...

In case you consider using the AMD `pstate` frequency scaling driver... Make sure to use `amd_pstate=active`. I tried `amd_pstate=passive` originally but, even with performance governor it would severely throttle at high-fps gaming. I often got 20-30 FPS lower than what the active or even the default `acpi` driver gave me during spiderman remastered. There is also `amd_pstate=guided` but I haven't tried that. CPU is 5800x3D and I usually play at 80-140FPS in that game so I'm thinking the load was not managed well by the passive one. [\#linux\_gaming](https://kbin.social/tag/linux_gaming)

Nvidia 980 Ti 6GB, or AMD RX Vega 64 8GB?

I have been offered a choice between these two cards, and I'm not sure which one will perform better in linux at this point. If it was Windows I would just go with the Nvidia and call it a day, but the driver situation on Linux has me leaning towards AMD. Is the AMD the right choice? I'm using the Garuda distro.

I want to return to Linux. Recomendations?

Like 10-15 years ago I was into linux and tried a bunch of different distros (PCLinuxOS, Mint, CentOS, OpenSuse...) and was quite happy with the, then, limited options of gaming on linux (It was the time Valve released TF2 for linux) But time passed, I got a new PC and didn't bothered install any linux distro (because I got a small HDD and didn't wanted to split it in partitions for linux) Back then stuff like Proton did not even exists, so today I'm kind of lost and don't know what flavour I should pick, so here I am asking for advice A couple of relevant details about the hardware, my PC is a little bit old (i7-7700) I hope that's not an obstacle to enjoy gaming on linux I also have an Nvidia graphic card Also, while most people just use Steam I also use GOG regularly, if that matters

Keyboard input sticky in some games

Hello all! wondering if anyone has any ideas on an issue I have run into with some games. Trying to play Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, playing the GOG version using Lutris. The runner I am using is GE-proton 8-10 although I also tried the lutris-7.2-2 runner and get the same behavior. The game seems to run OK but keyboard input seems like it "sticks" for lack of a better term. If I press left to turn the character left, when I release the key, the char keeps turning for a half to a full second before it stops. Or move forward, same thing. My DDG-fu hasn't come up with much, hoping someone has an idea why that might happen. I have seen this in other games as well but this is the most recent. Thanks all!

SteamVR Failing under Artix. Error 460, anyone know what I am missing?

Been looking for a solution for a bit, trying out many possible solutions, and SteamVR fails out with a Valve Index with an error code 460. I have tried it under Void Linux as well with the same code, but Devuan it worked however proton failed out. Everything works under Windows, just trying to migrate over to Linux for my primary! When this failure happens, the headset still tracks, and I can see in it's displays, it tracks the controllers, etc. However Steam appears to be unable to hook it to games, causing the room setup to not even see the headset as connected. It does show in SteamVR's debug as connected and all the input buttons work. I cannot find anything on Google for error 460, and both my Void and Artix installs have this issue

Battlebit Remastered on Linux/Anti-cheat

This game has recently come to my attention and it seems to work fine on Linux for now. But apparently the developers have decided to switch from their current anti-cheat (Easy Anti-cheat) to Faceit in the future, which would make it impossible to play on official servers on Linux. Am I missing something here? I was interested in buying the game, but if they are going to basically disable Linux support in the future, it seems like a bad idea. Edit: [This article](https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2023/07/battlebit-remastered-anti-cheat-for-steam-deck-linux-is-concerning/) is quite helpful. Apparently the developers arent entirely sure about FACEIT either. So we will have to wait and see.

Does anyone have experience getting tModLoader to run properly? When I try it with the Steam snap, using Proton, the game loads fine but when I get in to a world it goes black except for the UI. Does anyone know how to get it working?

New install - Help, 3 out of my 4 regularly played games aren't working!

Spurred by the move to non-proprietary software I swapped out my Windows 11 for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, and now 3 out of the 4 games I regularly play don't work well enough to play. I haven't checked games I only play occasionally, but I expect issues there too... 1. Path of Exile via Steam - Works perfectly, in fact maybe slightly better than Windows 2. Overwatch 2 via Lutris - Runs but with significant stuttering making it difficult to play 3. Diablo 4 via Lutris - Cannot run due to "Graphics Initialization failed" error 4. Melvor Idle via Steam - Runs but with minor stuttering and randomly breaks requiring complete re-install I've Googled, and tried the most common solutions to these problems (like configuring Lutris to use VKD3D v2.8, running the script that Lutris provides with Overwatch, and add D4 to Steam and run from there) but no real positive changes. For the most part, the rest of Ubuntu has been fine, but I don't want to be locked out of doing things I want to do on my own machine... Would appreciate any tips before I get too impatient and go back to Windows! Thanks in advance.

DirectStorage on Wine/Proton

Blizzard recently announced that they will be enabling DirectStorage for Diablo 4 in the future. Will gaming on Wine support this feature as new games start to enable it? As far as I understand there are two benefits DirectStorage has, one is making load times faster while using less CPU resources and another one allows the GPU to almost entirely bypass the CPU and use the storage directly. Hopefully the first feature would be easier to implement because it doesn't need the GPU drivers. Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty and Starfield are two upcoming games that require SSD to play, presumably because of DirectStorage, curious to see what will the performance be like on Linux using Wine

Note: This update is for the Steam Deck Beta and Preview channels, and includes new features that are still being tested. You can opt into this in Settings \> System \> System Update Channel. **General** * Fixed issue where inviting a user to a game would cause the overlay UI to soft-lock. * Fixed second achievements progress bar not being filled in when comparing achievements with a friend. * Fixed sharing screenshots not working properly. **Desktop Mode** * Fixed an issue where the system tray menu and Steam menus could open in the incorrect direction for certain monitor configurations. * Fixed a rare crash when using SteamVR. * Fixed videos continuing to play in browsers when window is minimized or closed. * Fixed page erroneously scrolling up when clicking certain parts of the advanced app filter pane. * Fixed overlay scaling when Steam display scaling setting disabled * Fixed case where a game would shell execute steam://store/\<appid\> to open a browser to their store page, but the overlay was not activated. **Steam Input** * Gyro calibration now uses a time window to calibrate (5s), rather than a fixed number of samples (since Dualsense is now being sampled at 800hz, and could potentially autocalibrate over too short a period).
