join the communities!

FYI, i see a lot of users joining, but not many people are actually subscribing to the communities. Subscribing to the communities you like will help them grow within the fediverse and be easier to discover!

TTRPG.network is now certified green hosted

Just a small FYI update, the host that we used just informed us that our website is now certified green hosted by [the green web foundation](https://www.thegreenwebfoundation.org/), meaning that our site is completely hosted by clean energy. You should see the badge display in our sidebar about it starting today.

Lemmy updated to 19.2

Just an FYI, ttrpg.network has updated to 19.2. There's apparently some potential issues with cached logins, and you must delete your cookies/cache, or log out and remove and readd your account to most apps. Let me know if you have any other problems.

Does anyone know what happened to pathfinder.social?

It's been down for over a month now. If you navigate to https://pathfinder.social you can see a blank Lemmy instance, but if you try to go anywhere else on that domain it just hard fails. On your own local instance you can still post to it, but because the host instance is gone it won't federate. So there's [this post](https://ttrpg.network/post/1785642) by [@Jaarsh119@ttrpg.network](https://ttrpg.network/u/Jaarsh119) which is on the ttrpg.network instance, but I can't see it from my own instance. Likewise, I created [this post](https://aussie.zone/post/3234999) around the same time on my home instance, but you won't be able to find it from ttrpg.network. Is anyone around who might know what's up with the admins of that instance, [@SenseiRat@pathfinder.social](https://pathfinder.social/u/SenseiRat), [@doggoblingames@pathfinder.social](https://pathfinder.social/u/doggoblingames), and [@HunterHog@pathfinder.social](https://pathfinder.social/u/HunterHog), or have a way to contact them? Gonna ping [@doggoblingames@dice.camp](https://dice.camp/users/doggoblingames) and [@hunterhog@lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/u/hunterhog), who seem like they might be the same people as two of those admins, in case they're monitoring those accounts.

Would you be interested in opting-in to lemmy-meter.info?

*Cross-posted from https://lemmy.ml/post/5719058* --- I've been working on a simple **opt-in solution**, primarily for Lemmy end users like me (but also helpful for admins), to easily check the status/health of their favourite instance. 🌎 [lemmy-meter.info](https://lemmy-meter.info) You can find the details of the implementation in ![](https://github.githubassets.com/favicons/favicon.png) [lemmy-meter github repo](https://github.com/bahmanm/lemmy-meter). --- ❓ @admins: would you be interested in adding your instance to lemmy-meter? **You don't need to do anything except confirming** - I'll handle the rest. It should only take a few minutes for your instance to show up in lemmy-meter. Out of the box it will send only **4 HTTP GET requests per minute** to your instance. However that is totally **configurable** if it sounds too much or too little. --- * [!lemmy_meter@lemmy.ml](https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy_meter) * [#lemmy-meter:matrix.org](https://matrix.to/#/#lemmy-meter:matrix.org)

Not seeing posts in subs from other instances--Where's the problem?

Basically what I said. This is the latest episode in the main speedbump I keep hitting with lemmy. I'm trying to follow broadly when new TTRPG instances crop up. (DIYRPG.org is the latest I know of, and the one I'm currently having trouble with.) When I navigate to the communities from my ttrpg.network account, I can't see any of the existing posts. So is the problem on this end (ttrpg.network isn't asking for the content) or their end (diyrpg.org isn't sending the content)? And is there anything I can do about it? If this can't work smoothly, I'd at least like to know how it works.

Communities list via mobile app

Anyone know if there is a way to view the list of communities (both subscribed and not) on ttrpg.network from one of the mobile apps (ie. mlem or memmy)? On the website I know I can just click "Communities" at the top, but I don't see anything similar on the mobile apps.

Lemmy updated to 18.3

Just finished updating to 18.3 here. Supposedly there's a good amount of DB improvements so you should see some improved performance. Let me know if you have any issues. It caused some significant downtime earlier as it was updating, so apologies if you noticed the site offline for about an hour or so.

Quick meta update: Anyone can create communities now

I just removed the restriction on creating communities. Originally this restriction was put in place to that any reddit mods jumping ship could claim their communities, but now that it has slowed down, I removed the restriction. New communities must still have TTRPG relevance, however.

The lemmyverse and you! An educational post

Hi all! Another post from me! This time i wanted to talk about the lemmyverse and more broadly the fediverse. We have a previous post talking about some tips and tricks with lemmy over [here](https://ttrpg.network/post/13). However, it was recently brought to my attention that some users of ttrpg.network might be going out in to other TTRPG communities in other fediverse instances, and either harassing users or asking them to close down and consolidate to here! I don't consider this ok. I would please ask that you respect the rules and etiquette of other communities and instances. Multiple communities across the fediverse for the same topic is a feature, and not a bug! There's many reasons this is good, however, chiefly among them - No one person or team can be all controlling on a subject. If you don't like what I, a mod here, a mod/admin on lemmy.world, etc. do, you can merely subscribe to a sister community on a different instance! You can also subscribe individually to all communities covering the same subject and create yourself a mega-feed of all the communities across the lemmiverse. Again, this is considered this a feature, not a bug. So if you're going in to other communities around the fediverse, please be respectful, nice, and participate in good faith! Doing this will actually help this community grow as it reflects well upon ourselves here, and seeing your username being from this instance will drive extra traffic to us!

Recent growth and the path forward

# Hi, all! I'm Eerongal, the admin who set up the TTRPG Network. After merely a month after working out the details around this lemmy instance with a number of other reddit TTRPG mods, the growth of this instance has been quite explosive! This is a good thing, it's always good for a community to grow. # However Growth is not without its costs. For transparency, the current projected costs of running this instance is about $25, around $12-ish dollars for the hosting, and another $13-ish for mail hosting, plus about $6 every year for domain registration. **this is ok**. I signed up for this knowing the cost, and being perfectly ok with fronting the bill for now. # This seems like it's definitely going to be a more long term thing. Originally when setting this up, I had no idea if this would just be a temporary refuge during reddit blackout, or if this would be something more. As it stands, we've had a ton of growth in just this short amount of time. As stated above, this is great! Far more than I expected. # Another However I got a notification just earlier today from the host that we're using a large percentage of our memory (not a huge deal at the moment, it was just a heads up, and our memory footprint is relatively low, this is just due to high user traffic over the past 24-48 hours), and after some checking, we're also nearing almost 50% of our file storage! Admittedly, this is merely a paltry 200 GB, and includes everything to run the server. Scaling this up with the host is fairly minimal (about $1 for every 200gb). The host also let me know that over the past 24 hours, our instance serviced over **5 million requests**. This is likely because of combined user traffic and *certain* posts (not naming names) trending in the wider fediverse. # What this means, and why I'm posting this I'm posting this, because in an effort to better prepare ourselves for the future, I'm setting up the ability for people to provide donations through ko-fi. **As stated above, our costs are currently fully under control, and there's no real issues right now.** I'm merely setting this up so that this instance can position itself in a positive spot as we continue to grow. # Does this mean I have to pay to use TTRPG.network? Absolutely not. Donations are, and for the foreseeable future will be, optional. I merely want to rip the bandage of *not* accepting them off right now so that we can make sure this community is around for a long time. # What will you do with the funds? Use them to pay for the server. Any excess funds will sit around to accumulate in a "war chest" for future needs. I'm certainly more than willing to do whatever is needed to appease the community as far as transparency goes, if there's ever problems or concerns around the site's funding. # What (besides paying) can I do to help? First thing would be to be mindful of resources. If you can use an image hosting service, such as imgur, or whatever you prefer, will help cut down on the growth of these resources. That said, i currently have no plans to disable the ability to upload images in any way. Spreading the word and helping the instance grow will also help out in a positive way. In addition, participating in the community by posting, voting, commenting, etc. helps to grow the community in its own way too. Overall, I'm very proud and happy that we are at this point where I even have to consider these things. Because the alternative would be that the server never caught on, and went unused and eventually closed. **overall, I'm just happy I can provide something akin to the community we had back over on reddit.** I know I personally have been avoiding reddit as much as possible since the debacle. All in all, I want this to be an open dialog, that's why I'm putting this out to the community. If you have questions, feel free to ask. If you have concerns, also feel free to voice them. If you want to complain, well, i guess go ahead, though that doesn't feel too productive. As for donations, you can donate, either one time or monthly right [here](https://ko-fi.com/thettrpgnetwork) And i will also be adding this link to the sidebar of the main page. Thank you for hearing me out, hope this doesn't rustle anyone's jimmies, and may all your rolls be 20's!

2FA doesn't seem to work

I was setting up my account today, and I noticed that you can enable 2FA, but the link to actually link it to an authenticator doesn't seem to work. The button for installation link appears (after saving settings and refreshing the page), but clicking it does not do anything. What I have tried so far: - On Firefox with all extensions disabled - On Chrome with no extensions

New Feature suggestion - back button on left/right side of posts

I'm used to reddit being able to backtrack into the main feed by just clicking left or right from the post and it would be a really nice addition. But if that's too much, a back button would be appreciated! (please make sure it goes back to the previous scroll position)

update to lemmy hack situation: TTRPG.network is now patched

TTRPG.network now contains a patch to fix the vulnerability that lead to the XSS attack on other instances. Although we weren't at risk for the exploit, I would rather everyone have peace of mind. In the corner of the UI you should now see the following in the corner. ![](https://ttrpg.network/pictrs/image/92c8134b-9d8c-4046-8a26-92a5f6969c85.png) For more information about what was going on, see here: https://ttrpg.network/post/93323

Update on lemmy hack: Long story short - we're safe here. https://lemmy.ml/post/1901079

See post for details, but a quick tl;dr: Malicious actors were able to inject code using a XSS (cross site scripting) attack and steal JWT tokens for users. Any user who had their token compromised has potentially had their password and email address compromised. This only applies to instances that have *local* custom emojis. Posts with custom emojis that are federated in from a remote server are *not* affected. We currently have no custom emojis, so if your account is here on TTRPG.network, your account is safe. *If your account is remote to an affected server, i would recommend changing your password asap*

First time DM with no playing experience

Some of my friends are starting DnD but none of us have played before. I offered to DM because I have listened to some podcasts(TAZ, Dimension 20, CR, etc.) We are starting with Grammys Country Apple Pie as way to dip our toes in. How can I best prepare and learn how to DM effectively. What resources do you suggest to read or watch? We are also using Foundry VTT because I live in a different state. Thanks in advance!

Pictures for communities?

I've noticed as a mobile user (jerboa, liftoff etc) when searching for and using communities in this instance they don't have an image representing the community like most others do, just a blank space. I believe adding these would help with discoverability/readability, assuming its not a problem just on my end.

Explainer someone on site

So I just joined from the DNDmemes reddit and love what is going on, but am new to Lemmy and it is not obvious to find out that this is even an instance of Lemmy. I moved over to Mastodon from Twitter last year and saw how hard it was for many to understand what was going on, with the many instances Can we have a pinned post to explain what this exactly is and how people can access it from an app on their phones?

Participation from other instances not working?

I made an account to post this, not sure if this is a known issue but I couldn't find anything about it. I've subscribed to a couple communities from here from Lemmy.world and made a post 2 days ago, but all my subscriptions are still pending and my post is still not shown on here (it's showing for other people subscribed from lemmy.world though apparently). I'm not sure if this is specific to lemmy.world. Or is this instance just having performance issues?

Getting an external community visible on ttrpg.network

An external community needs 1 subscriber to be visible in ttrpg.network, after the first subscriber it's visible for everyone. This is a bit more complicated than just searching for the community in the list of communities. Here's what works for both lemmy and kbin. Put the url of the community in search: - lemmy example "https://lemmy.world/c/lemmyworld" - kbin example "https://kbin.social/m/science" click search, click the result, then subscribe. After that it's visible here https://ttrpg.network/communities/listing_type/All/page/1 And for example science is here : https://ttrpg.network/c/science@kbin.social

Email account verification requirement turned off

FYI, i've been seeing some complaints about emails not showing up or taking a long time, so in order to not hinder new sign ups, i went ahead and suspended email verification for now. I might look at turning it back on later, but for now I wanted the user on boarding experience to go better. **This means that you should, after setting up your account, add an email to it, just to make sure you have the ability to recover your account at a later date.**

Missing communities

Since it's only the admins who can set up communities perhaps it would be a good idea to create a spot where we all can suggest and discuss what communties we are missing. For what it is worth it's kind of good that a themed/focused instance restrict community creation. With that out of the way there are two communities I miss here and haven't found on the fediverse. AskGameMasters - a place for gathering questions about GMing. And encourage them. LookingForGroup - a place to post game adverts and perhaps also for players to post their desires.

If you are reading this post as someone who just made their account and cannot log in, I am making this post for you. I had created my account, but I could not log in. Progress would continue without error message or timeout, which appears to be the case for anyone who has created an account but not verified their email yet. However, I had not received the email to verify my signup mailbox. It appears that this can take a long time to be received, over 2 hours in my case. So if you are attempting to sign up and log in, you may need to wait a while for an email to come in from admin@ttrpg.network I hope this helps, cheers!
