Asshole Email Preferences

Purposefully deceitful toggle switch colours. Am I saving my preference to receive none, or to receive all? Found on clevertap.com's mailing list service. ![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/f3081ccb-568f-4e9d-a3a3-388cb43be59b.png) ![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/a8fd181b-3ef7-4a78-9413-0d8b55807b75.png)

WAPO "gift" articles now require signing up

Gift articles previously were accessible just with the link. The latest article I attempted to read now requires me to first sign up **edit** The article in question <https://wapo.st/4fp62oH> I am well aware of many work arounds. The point of this post was to show wapo has _changed_ the way gift articles work, which previously _**didn’t**_ require a workaround

'"Walmartwifi" isn't compatible with iCloud Private Relay' | Store demands privacy sacrifice to use internet in their cavernous dead zone of a building

This is after forcing login to a store account: ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/8620320c-f420-41ef-a9e3-a2e92aadd3fc.jpeg) At least they don’t hide in their ToS that: “l agree to let Walmart monitor my use of Walmart WiFi, including to: * Determine my presence in Walmart stores * Associate information about me with my Walmart account * Improve products and services * Gather market insights about my in-store purchases and activities” But that’s not enough, they need to monitor your internet activity further too. --- For further reading, some greatest hits (the section headers on Wiki’s [Criticism of Walmart](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Walmart)): * Local communities * Allegations of predatory pricing and supplier issues * Labor relations * Poorly run and understaffed stores * No AEDs in stores (automated external defibrillators) * Imports and globalization * Product selection * Taxes * Animal welfare * Midtown Walmart * Opioids settlement

Dropbox now requires login to download a shared file

On mobile, it prompts you to either "get the app" or "open app" with no way to click past. Screenshot won't upload. This is worse from several months ago https://lemmy.today/post/8935690

Fun fact: If you use your bank to threaten adobe, they will waive the cancellation fee https://imgur.com/gallery/fun-fact-if-you-use-bank-to-threaten-adobe-they-will-waive-cancellation-fee-c58h3fe

Not mine but this is actually what I did too. I said I plan to charge back on my credit card. They threatened that if I did that, they can't promise my account wouldnt be flagged. I said "bet" and they removed the cancellation fee and cancelled the service.

Are there any better apps for viewing Google Sheets on mobile?

This document isn't changing every time I view it, but Google Sheets wants me to reload it each and every time I close my phone. Even if I'm in airplane mode it gives me this prompt, and of course just loads the same document. What is it even doing when I hit the Reload button??

HP tied thermal shutdown to Windows, meaning it doesn't work on Linux. https://imgur.com/a/rJYKu7g

My HP All-In-One 20-c081nt has the processor Intel Core i3-6100U, which is supposed to not run hotter than 100C. On Windows if 100C is reached, the screen will fade out and PC will immediately shutdown. A warning will be shown at next boot. On Linux, seen in the video, the PC will simply keep running as if nothing has happened and show the thermal shutdown warning **after a graceful reboot**.

My grocery store wants to know my BMI

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/16216017 > My grocery store wants to know my BMI > > If they were interested in my location they could request location data. What are the odds they are doing this to directly market products to people based on health data? > > Inb4 “They already do that based on what you regularly purchase” > > Of course, yes they do. This appears to be one more layer on top of it. And surely they wouldn’t share that information with the pharmacy, right?

Dating site clearly states on ToS that all the hot girls nearby you are bots

And of course they want a credit card on file for "age verification" 😉 or they won't let you chat with the bots

Batteries in a disposable lip gloss dispenser

And the label doesn't say anything about it, doesn't have the "don't throw in the trash" logo. Those LEDs are glued in, there's no way to remove batteries before discarding the item

Soldered-on RTC batteries (with type covered as a bonus)

>This battery lasts the life of the router under the operating environmental conditions specified for the router, and is not field-replaceable. But who determines its lifespan? Knowing there is a battery set to fail and I can't simply replace it makes me physically uncomfortable. Enough so that I'd rather it not have RTC. Thanks Cisco.

Unfortunate ad placement

I don’t know if this fits the community, but the way ads placement works can lead to some unfortunate results Just looking for some cooking ideas, and I wish I could forget what I saw ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/b02fc874-f494-4599-a3b8-696185ee0953.jpeg)

Accept the privacy policy so you can read the privacy policy.

Clicked on a link to read an article, and was met with this pop-up. I decided to click on the privacy policy link to view what I was agreeing to. It cannot be viewed unless you agree to what you haven't read yet.

More garbage from Microsoft making using their stuff take longer.

I don't see anyone falling for this either, if they were going to they would already have edge installed.

My bank gives me the option to opt out of marketing communications. It takes three clicks to opt out of each category, and there are three pages like this!

Marketing should always be OPT-IN by default, but these extra steps to opt out is truly asshole design. Oh, and on the opt-out confirmation screen, you get two options: Yes or No. The button colour for "yes" is white, and the “no” button matches the “save” button on the previous screen, so it's easy to accidentally cancel the opt-out. Double-asshole design!

Local union got new brand mascots

Not quite sure what they represent but their new slogan means "quiet tummy" that translates to "feel safe" and a similar saying as "gut feeling"... They may be tummies but look like something entirely different. They have TV commercials with them talking to each other

automatically turning on new (creepy)feature with no single click to disable them

there's just this vague recommendation to "turn it off in settings." no link, no toggle, nothing. had to hunt for the relevant setting in the app(even their settings menu is down under in the list when you tap on your avatar. --- image transcription: a screenshot of Google play store which has a popup that can only be disabled by pressing OK button at the bottom. the popup contains the following text: **Google is optimising app installs with your help** Google Play makes apps faster to install, open and run based on what people are using most. The first time that you open an app after installing, Google notes which parts of the app you use. When enough people do this, your apps will install faster. App install optimisation is automatically turned on, but you can turn it off in settings. Learn more
