What We Never Say Out Loud In Higher Education www.forbes.com

The author of this article asserts some of the recent complaints I've either personally heard from others or some of my own opinions regarding the costs of higher education. Scott Galloway has recently become well known for additional criticism of higher education creating artificial constraints on admissions or acceptance of potential students. Do you believe any of these points have merit? Do you believe the current costs of higher education either in the US or other first world countries provides appropriate return on investment? Do you believe the assertion that senior lecturers don't have the same teaching skill requirements as primary education in addition to their subspecialty or focus? How could higher education be improved or is the current model working well enough?

Can anyone prove definitely that corrupt politicians are trying to keep poor voters from voting?

Still seems like an assertion that's a matter of opinion.

Did anyone throw the same fit about driving cars? You have to take the same time off work and get all the same documents to do literally every other civil function: legally drive to work, open a bank account for direct deposit, get a credit card, get medical treatment, get insurance, file taxes, etc. You have to pay for transportation to the grocery store if you don't have a car.

Why is just one political group making a fuss about it, which seems to be really focus on voting? You only vote once in a while. You do or use those other examples every day.

I feel like a larger issue is just being exploited for political people to make victom statements.

Why is voting less important to prove identity than buying alcohol?

I'm not a citizen of this country. You're saying I can/should vote? That's illegal, but what stops me. I could do it a bunch of times too, I just go to different places.

I get it, but I disagree. I don't it's about voting, I think it affects voting.

I'd rather fix the poor problem than allow voter fraud.

The fees for everything we need government services for, like getting a document is outrageous. Why the he'll do we pay taxes to fund government agencies local/state/etc and then still pay fees?

That's double taxation. I think that's the real fight on poor people. That document fee is over some people's hourly wage, but yet it's required.

That's about like having to be in debt in order to build credit. It all serves to take money from working class to wealthy.

So when I read this, don't think: "Let's stop ID'ing people when they buy alcohol or weed" (someday), but instead I think: "Why aren't IDs free!?"

If it's critical and a civil need to ID people for all sorts of valid reasons, then it should be free/tax funded.

I'd rather tax money cover something like IDs than hear agreements about trying to restrict fraud. If you want to prevent voter fraud, eliminate reasons that allow the conditions to persist.

Thanks for the read. I do t have an easy idea for the time. Indiana BMV was massively improved a while ago. Maybe we need more of that. There's probably no getting around taking the time to establish identity or dealing with stupid documents. We have to start somewhere.

    Firewall Schemes at Different Layers

This is a network defense design scheme question. In a scenario where your organization is designing multi-layered firewall deployment and management, how granular  do you create rules at each of these three layers? Example site is a main/HQ site that also houses your data center (basic 3 tier model). 1) Site has your main internet gateway and VPN termination point. As am example, it's a Cisco or other ZBF. It has four zones: (1) Internet, (2) VPNs from other sites/clients, (3) your corporate LAN including data center, (4) Guest/untrusted/Iot. 2) Between your gateway and the rest of your corporate network/datacenter, you have transparent proxy firewall/IPS/monitor. It's bridging traffic between gateway and data center. 3) Within data center, hosts have software host based firewalls, all centrally managed by management product. Questions: - How granular do you make ZBF policies at gateway? Limit it to broad zones, subnets, etc? Get granular by source/destination? Further granular by source/destination/port? - How granular do you make rules for transparent proxies between segments? Src/dst? Src/dst/port? - How granular do you make rules for host based firewalls? Src/dst? Src/dst/port? Src/dst/port/application/executable? - How have organizations you've worked for implemented these strategies? - Were they manageable vs effective? - Did the organization detect/prevent lateral movement if any unauthorized access happened? - What would you change about your organization's firewall related designs?

Do you base device/operating system configurations on: - CIS workbench? - NIST/STIG? - Microsoft best practice? - Google searches and 'that looks good'? Implementing Least-Privilege Administrative Models learn.microsoft.com

Does anyone fully implement workstation and server logon restrictions, and priviledged access workstations (PAW) as prescribed by NIST/STIG/CIS? The URL is Microsoft's long description of the same concepts. Specifically from the above, there's a few things like: - Establishing asset/systems tiers (domain controllers or entire org compromise tier 0, moving towards less consequence in the event of system compromise) - Accounts with the Active Directory Domain Admins or equivalent are supposed to be blocked from logging into lower tier assets - Workstations that have access to log into these super sensitive assets like Domain controllers for management are considered PAWs, and are blocked from internet access, highly locked down, might have extra hoops or management plane assets are air gapped? Question: Does anyone actually do any of this at their organization? If so, to what degree? People hated red forest because it was a whole other set of infrastructure to baby sit. People hate air gapped systems because no remote access or work from home. The above doesn't work well with cloud, and as a result Microsoft (just as an example) pushed for the new hybrid PIM models replacing their old red forest concept. I'm just curious.

    Thanks for the insight.

It's a shame we still can all just get along. That saying is lame, but it's ultimately the goal.

One of my ideas, that isn't terribly realistic or shouldn't have to be resorted to, is to locate our selves in regions that are more welcoming.

There was a person at my work who was lesbian, which I suspected, but they weren't open. One day at a social event, they brought their wife and brother (for support) and made public. I was stupid and didn't put all that together until then.

They moved to Washington State and both have great jobs now. I felt like part of that move was related to moving to a region known to support their life style more welcomingly, at least compared to Indiana.

You shouldn't have to do that, but if I could stack enough chips to afford doing that and needed to, I would.

I said above that you shouldn't have to do that ever. No one should be treated like shit by whole groups of people, political, religious or other wise.

I like the idea of states competing for talent and opportunity. Washington also tried decriminalization of all drugs. Lots of people nay sayed. I thought it was great. They tried an experiment instead of just listening to a bunch of wind bags. That didn't work as it was implemented, but we all got real world data, and identified other failures of legislation that went beyond just drugs (treatment, transportation issues, logistics, funding,.etc). I might be all talk though, I would not want to conduct that here.

Weed is the same way. All the states doing it are eventually going to have eliminated all excuses for now allowing it. Some states still might never. That's ok. People can shuffle around based on what's important to them.

You shouldn't ever have to be subjected to mistreatment just for who you are though, anywhere in America.

I hate both our parties, most of all politicians, and a large majority of our policies in their current form. There's no one for me to vote for, and no national pride in what they do or represent.

I often want to think that people can be conservative and like some Republican ideas, but without the stereotypical bigotry stuff.

Personally now, I think that's less and less possible, but part of why I'm asking.

I feel like I'm running into less barely Republican people, and more very Republican people. I guess by that, I mean people whom are more accepting or believing that their policies are right (being very opposed to immigration, accepting LGBTQ, pro corporate, etc).

I like the Midwest, and dislike the East Coast look and feel. I haven't been on the West Coast enough to form a meaningful opinion.

I also don't qualify for discrimination targeting. Most of the corruption I'm surrounded by seems to relate more to socioeconomics and greedy politicians than people who care about someone's color/etc, but again, maybe naive...

These people don’t think people like Noem and Trump go far enough. It’s actually important to understand that even the “nice church people” types believe this. They support much more extreme policies than what we’re seeing.

Holy shit, what do they want, a culling?

There's some mega churches around me, but they are very modern, kid glove, and do the whole 'come as you are'. That's not the same thing as accepting people in the letter community, they still think those people are living wrong, but they are generally more compassionate about it.

Edit, I think some of those churches would love to have letter community people attend, but that's because they'd hope to love on them enough to have them change their life. I honestly believe they'd be doing it out of genuine concern or 'love', regardless of whether that's misguided or not. How misguided and crazy that sounds to people usually depends on how they feel about these people's lives and if you accept them for who they are or not.

Example, I think most of the common mega church people around here would follow the Bible's parable about the adulteress and 'let the person without sin cast the first stone' approach. God in that example shows he cares about her more than the bad thing she did first, then calls out people for a lack of compassion and thinking what they were doing wrong was more OK than her, but lastly said 'go and sin no more' which was basically 'try to stop doing this'. My post isnt about religion, I'm just using this as an example to illustrate that I think there's varying degrees of people/religion/bigotry and I am not sure if regions are all the same.

What you're describing sounds far more extreme to me than people around me in Indiana, but again, I might be missing things.

@LinkOpensChest_wav@midwest.social @Pandantic@midwest.social How is the general population?

In the midwest, we are called the Bible belt. We are also accused of being the biggest bigots, with terms like neo Christianity or religio-fascists. I like to think/pretend that law makers are a little more extreme or loud than the general population, but they still pander to a base that elects them, so that negates my idea to some extent. Maybe the process of legislating looses nuance and empathy because it's difficult to do that in law? I'm not sure. Maybe I have an unrealistically rosy view of the region. I'm not in a group that would feel oppression or hatred for who I am unless I go to places with people who do, then I get labeled or target by those because I look like their oppressors (which is ironic, but understandable).

Indiana had the religious freedom act, which was a huge black eye. I could write a huge rant on cake lady. The short version is my refusal to accept her ideas as Christian/religion based, not mine anyway. IMO, Jesus never treated anyone like shit other than the Pharisees, whom he constantly schooled for 'missing the point'. I think she was just a plain old fashion bigot, and I wish she would have just said "I don't like gay people". I wouldn't have to agree, but at least she'd be honest and take the proper heat for it.

Unfortunately, I know there's plenty of criticism for the Midwest, conservative region that probably has some roots in religion, but I'm not sure if it's just because of religion or the negative manipulation of it. Example: Islam is inherently bad and violent, or it was corrupted to manipulate people to violence and hate?

What's going on with the Midwest politically? infosec.pub

My reason for posting this question is to get some perspective, since I don't live further west than Indiana. Indiana has a lot of conservative tendencies, usually opposes progressive policies, and a little old school bigotry in the form of religion based disagreement with people's life styles, like letter community. From an outsiders perspective, TX, OK, MO etc are even more extreme. This permalink above from a comment from a person referencing recently proposed legislation against letter community people specifically, though there's tons of examples of bigotry like the school principal getting sued for discrimination due to a kid's hair (black hair). We know Lemmy is a bit more populated with left than right thinkers, but regardless, what's going on in these western plains states? Is it as bad as it looks? Do you personally know some sweet old church ladies who 'hate the gays because they'll going to hell' or are there just more extreme law makers being elected that don't represent the majority? I'm interested in real world experience regarding: - cost - effectiveness - ease of use I'm playing with Tenable Security Center and Nessus Scanner. I'm early in the deployment, just looking for pointers and whether anyone has used it? What alternatives is your org using if not? Can you compare? Edit, if anyone is interested, I can post results and opinions here also.

Indy FOP calls for judge to resign and for changes to courts after Dorsey sentencing https://fox59.com/news/indycrime/indianapolis-fop-to-provide-comment-after-dorsey-sentencing/

INDIANAPOLIS – Angry reaction from community leaders continue to pour in after a controversial punishment was handed down to the man who was convicted of killing Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer Breann Leath. Dorsey was sentenced on Thursday to 25 years in prison after he was found guilty but mentally ill on the following charges: One count of reckless homicide Three counts of criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon One count of attempted murder One count of criminal confinement Dorsey was not convicted of murder by the jury. That charge was reduced to the lesser reckless homicide charge. ... Snyder, who is the president of the Indianapolis FOP, said during a Friday afternoon news conference that residents of Indianapolis, as well as Indiana residents and those throughout the country, saw a “miscarriage of justice” through Stoner’s sentencing. In response, Snyder said the maximum sentence of 63 years should have been implemented for Dorsey in this case, which Snyder called an attempt of “cold blooded murder.” ... “As mayor and as a father, I’m shocked and disappointed in the decision that was handed down yesterday,” said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett.

IMPD find stash of cocaine, meth, fentanyl, guns hidden in chicken wing restaurant https://fox59.com/news/indycrime/impd-seizes-cocaine-meth-fentanyl-guns-from-indy-business/

INDIANAPOLIS — A traffic stop ended up leading investigators to a restaurant on Indy’s east side where police uncovered cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, fentanyl and enough firepower for a shootout. William Collins, 45, was arrested by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department on Monday for his role in the alleged drug trafficking. Collins also isn’t permitted to own a firearm due to being a convicted felon. Police said Collins was arrested during a traffic stop after detectives witnessed a “hand-to-hand drug transaction” in a parking lot in the 3200 block of N. Emerson. During the traffic stop, police found a handgun in Collins’ possession. The investigation eventually led police to 1313 Eatery, a chicken wing shop located at 5299 E. 38th Street. Detectives searched the business and seized approximately 600 grams of cocaine, five pounds of meth, one pound of marijuana and 70 grams of fentanyl pills. Also found in the restaurant were three firearms, two of which were reported stolen, and nearly 900 rounds of live ammunition.

Indiana State Police blitz westside interstate https://fox59.com/news/indiana-state-police-blitz-westside-interstate/

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Police troopers made 120 traffic stops and cited a majority of those drivers for speeding during a two-hour ticket-writing blitz on the west side of Indianapolis Wednesday. More than a dozen troopers, warned by lawmen with handheld laser speed detectors, pulled over drivers exceeding the 55-mile-per-hour limits on I-465 between 56th and 38th streets for two hours in the afternoon. Sgt. John Perrine said troopers were stopping only drivers topping out at 75 MPH and above. ”We’re certainly not out here looking for the people who are minor speeding. We’re looking for the most egregious, most aggressive drivers who are really causing problems,” he said. ”We would like to lower that threshold but it’s really hard to go out and stop the people doing 10 over when we know a few seconds later there is somebody coming who is doing thirty over.” Perrine said excessive speed is often to blame for road rage incidents. ”We have a group of drivers who want to drive slow in the left lane and say, ‘Hey, you’re not passing me. If I’m gonna drive the speed limit, you’re gonna drive the speed limit.’ And the other side of the selfish driver is, ‘I don’t care about anybody else. I’m gonna drive the way I want as fast as I want.’ We really need to get a handle on both of those.” Perrine said troopers from across the state will be patrolling Indianapolis area interstates through the rest of this year engaging in occasional blitzes. ... ## Why can't we go faster? Why cant the speed limit of Indiana's 465 beltway be increased over 55 mph? ### Copilot The speed limit on I-465, despite most drivers exceeding it, remains at 55 mph due to Indiana state law. Specifically, because I-465 is considered to be within an urban area, its speed limit cannot exceed 55 mph. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has the authority to lower the speed limit if an engineering study demonstrates that a lower speed is necessary for safety or traffic reasons1. So, even though many drivers find the current limit too low, it remains in place due to legal constraints. Interestingly, the real-world data supports the notion that drivers consistently exceed the speed limit on I-465. For instance: 96.3% of vehicles recorded at one spot on the northwest side of I-465 were going over the speed limit. More than half of the vehicles were recorded at speeds exceeding 65 mph, which is more than 10 mph over the limit1. While there have been discussions about implementing variable speed limits on parts of I-465, the existing legal framework keeps the maximum speed at 55 mph2. So, despite the bustling traffic and the urge to go faster, the beltway remains a place where the Racing Capital of the World meets the 55 mph speed limit1! 🏎️🚗 southbendtribune.com indystar.com aaroads.com

Roundabouts: Let's go! Love Them or Hate Them?

    # Let's Play Date, Marry, Kill...with Roundabouts. What are your thoughts as Indiana starts adopting these modern traffic control measures (Europe has been doing them since...forever)? Most people I talk to either love or hate these intersections. For some reason, I can't find people who are indifferent to them very often. According to the Carmel's city webpage: "Carmel is internationally known for its roundabout network. Since the late 1990’s Carmel has been building and replacing signalized intersections with roundabouts. Carmel now has more than 150 roundabouts, more than any other city in the United States." "The number of injury accidents in Carmel have reduced by about 80 percent and the number of accidents overall by about 40 percent." https://www.carmel.in.gov/government/departments-services/engineering/roundabouts#:~:text=Carmel%20is%20internationally%20known%20for,city%20in%20the%20United%20States. ## General PROs / CONs - Up to a 90 percent reduction in fatalities - 76 percent reduction in injury crashes - 30-40 percent reduction in pedestrian crashes - Reduces the severity of crashes - Keeps pedestrians safer - Roundabouts reduce the number of potential accident points within an intersection, 75 percent fewer conflict points than four-way intersections - No signal equipment to install and repair, savings estimated at an average of $5,000 per year in electricity and maintenance costs - Service life of a roundabout is 25 years (vs. the 10-year service life of signal equipment) - Reduces pollution and fuel use - 30-50 percent increase in traffic capacity, improves traffic flow for intersections that handle a high number of left turns, reduces need for turn lanes - While roundabouts can handle moderate to heavy traffic volumes more efficiently than traditional intersections, they may experience congestion and delays during periods of extremely high traffic volumes or if not designed properly for the anticipated traffic flow - Pedestrians and cyclists may face challenges navigating roundabouts, particularly multi-lane roundabouts with higher traffic volumes. Proper design considerations, such as providing safe crossing points, adequate sight lines, and dedicated pedestrian/cyclist facilities, are crucial to ensure their safety. - Drivers unfamiliar with roundabouts may initially experience confusion or hesitation when navigating them, potentially leading to increased risks or delays until they become accustomed to the traffic patterns. - Roundabouts generally require a larger footprint and more land area https://www.in.gov/indot/traffic-engineering/roundabouts/#:~:text=Up%20to%20a%2090%20percent,points%20than%20four%2Dway%20intersections (CONs came from general searching, LLM compilation) Indianapolis and the surrounding suburbs are implementing them more frequently now, how about your city? Did you know that traffic circles are different from roundabouts? PA has a little comparison chart that was interesting (If you're into that sort of thing): https://www.penndot.pa.gov/PennDOTWay/pages/Article.aspx?post=24

Indy installed no-turn-on-red signs at downtown intersections. Are drivers obeying them? www.wishtv.com

... The pace of violations, recorded since the city restricted turns at 97 downtown intersections, amounts to an average of about seven tickets per month. Two pedestrian advocates told Mirror Indy they would like to see more enforcement, but city officials said the number of tickets issued is only one metric — and not the most indicative of success when it comes to pedestrian safety measures. “Their desired effect was not to increase (the) number of tickets issued by IMPD. It was to ensure the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists in the Mile Square,” Vop Osili, the Democratic president of Indianapolis City-County Council, said in an emailed statement to Mirror Indy. ... The policy change followed a study from the Indianapolis Department of Public Works that looked at a five-year history of pedestrian-related crashes in the downtown area. It found that 57% of were the result of vehicles failing to yield to pedestrians at intersections with traffic signals. Data also showed that downtown pedestrians were more than twice as likely to be involved in a crash compared to pedestrians in the rest of Marion County. ... Freeman, who was a city-county councilor from 2010 to 2016, argued that the policy would “create confusion and congestion” and “won’t stop distracted, reckless or aggressive driving.”

I like this bean. It's smooth, and I usually like roasts with chocolate notes. I'm also cheap. This is around .50 cents US per once. Do you have a favorite bean that's medium/smooth, and also in the .50 range that can be ordered online? My local roasters are all around a dollar per once and I haven't found anything that was so good, I couldn't go back to this for half the cost, so I do them as a special occasion.

Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) – DoD Cyber Exchange https://public.cyber.mil/stigs/

For anyone interested in compliance and hardening, here's some links to the DOD/US GOV standards for information systems. This information is available to the public. ## Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) This is a document that has recommended settings, methods, etc to make a product the most secure it can reasonably be. STIGs break things or turn off features people might be accustomed to. You have to do testing and figure out how to either make something work with STIG settings applied, or do exceptions. These are similar to Internet Security (CIS) Benchmarks. ## STIG Viewer The STIG viewer is a Java app that basically makes the list into a checklist where you can track applying settings. ## SCAP Going farther with automation, Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP) can be used to conduct automated checked against systems to determine compliance with a setting. Install the SCAP tool, load the automated checks into it, and then take the results from SCAP tool and import them into the STIG viewer. It will knock out anything that could be checked automatically. The remaining checks would be things that are manually checked. ## Compare Here's a good article that compares STIGs and CIS benchmarks: https://nira.com/stig-vs-cis/#:~:text=The%20Center%20for%20Internet%20Security%20offers%20a%20tool%20similar%20to,robust%20than%20the%20STIG%20tool. Inside the Black business boom that’s reshaping America's economic landscape & Opinion Discussion fortune.com

The article discusses business successes by entrepreneurs, and outlines the realities of obtaining financing for these businesses. > Black-owned businesses in the U.S. are major contributors to the economy, generating $206 billion in annual revenue and supporting 3.56 million U.S. jobs. Many of these businesses are federal contractors and many more are in a good position to become contractors. > Black entrepreneurs apply for business loans at a higher rate, yet we are receiving funding at a much lower rate compared to white entrepreneurs. Studies show that Black entrepreneurs are three times more likely than white entrepreneurs to report that access to financial capital negatively impacts their profits. Discussion: Businesses and government are making efforts to roll back DEI, which naturally leaves people imagining we might lose gains made for minorities and opportunity. Large efforts have been over the years to legislate fairness by making discrimination illegal (effectiveness questionable since we felt like DEI was needed), then tried to legislate including people based on their gender/race/etc. The DEI ideas were attacked asserting it shifts from qualifications to a person's physical properties. - Why can't we eliminate gender and racial aspects of applications for things like education, financial support, employment, etc? (Yes, people's names convey some of this) - What potential efforts could we make that isn't focused on meeting quotas that continues to put people into boxes based on their physical properties and assess true potential?

Indiana House Bill 202: I'm a professor. Indiana's progressive colleges stifle debate. www.indystar.com

Indiana's legislature is getting involved in higher education. Your world view will likely inform whether you think that's good or bad. I can't think of many instances where it's good. Edit: This post isn't an endorsement of the measure, there are more opposition articles below. I'll include quotes from the posted article, and include a couple of other related opposition articles. > Indeed, from what I’ve seen, not a single professor or administrator who testified on this bill admitted a lack of ideological diversity in higher education. That is troubling and, at best, reveals an unhealthy institutional blind spot. There are other perspectives. > Today, American public universities are among the least ideologically diverse institutions in the world. Indiana is no exception. I am certain there is more ideological diversity in a typical infantry platoon than would be found at any public university. > Let me be clear by what I mean about ideology. I teach Karl Marx to first year students. That isn’t indoctrination. Likewise, a biology professor should ignore public opinion on evolution or photosynthesis. Our research and teaching should pursue and reflect truth, no matter the distress it causes. I am not referring to party affiliation or support for a particular candidate. By ideological imbalance, I mean there is an artificial closed-mindedness that stifles debate, isolates important perspectives and diminishes the richness of a college education. > One clear example comes from a Ball State University colleague who attended a brainstorming session on how to convince more faculty to live near the university. He suggested that highlighting the many high quality local schools would help attract new faculty. Most normal folks view this as self-evident. Yet, this professor was scolded by a senior university administrator, who said the university would not discuss that because “concern about school quality is white privilege.” Opposition articles: https://www.indystar.com/story/news/2024/02/26/senate-bill-202-receives-pushback-public-universities-indiana-purdue-ball-state-general-assembly/72743950007/ > “If you’re saying that you want to be able to fire faculty for not promoting intellectual diversity, it’s basically giving a gag order to them to say: ‘Don’t upset students. Don't challenge them, or we might have to fire you,'” Erickson said. > While Purdue has not yet made a formal statement, their faculty-led Senate released a statement claiming the bill poses a near-existential threat to faculty tenure, making retaining and recruiting faculty harder and potentially eroding academic freedom. > Ball State's University Faculty Council chimed in as well in a statement condemning the bill and rejecting "the provisions in SB 202 which grant the Board of Trustees oversight of intellectual diversity on campus." https://www.indystar.com/story/news/politics/2024/02/29/indiana-senate-bill-202-universities-purdue-deery-tenure-expression-holcomb/72780178007/ > House Democrats for the last several weeks have railed on the bill in the chamber's education committee and on the House floor arguing against the premise that Indiana universities need the free expression requirements. > Historical and contemporary examples of such purposefully diminished intellectual spaces abound: from Communist Party-controlled university curriculum in China, to routine dismissals of free-thinking faculty in Islamist-controlled universities in Iran, to countless suspensions, intimidations, and even forced migrations of academics at the behest of political strongmen in Russia, Turkey, Hungary, to countless other similar or worse cases across the globe. Discussion comments: First, it's very well known that no one likes American republicans, there's likely no need for party bashing/name calling since there's already tons of posts for that. Please keep party related comments in context on specific educational legislation trends if possible. One of the articles mentions US conservative students though, so it's still relevant. - Have you ever attended an educational institution that you felt scolded for expressing an ideological view? Examples: Political, economic, religious, etc? What were those views and how were they received? - Have you attended an educational institution where the course curriculum was heavily influenced by political ideology? What was it? What is the context of your region/locality's views and how did it align or differ from what you were being taught? - "Our research and teaching should pursue and reflect truth, no matter the distress it causes." Do you have any examples of teachings like this you received? Was it to your benefit or not? - Did you ever experience a professor in your higher education track teach heavily political view points, even in a class that was not related to politics (like Biology)? What about one's you identify with? Progressive, Liberal, Conservative? > “concern about school quality is white privilege.” - Do you believe that mentioning good schools in a community to attract talent is 'white privilege'? - Does that mean areas with good schools are for whites, and areas with bad schools are for underprivileged? Is this racial, or socioeconomic? - From your higher education experience, what institutional issues did you experience related to this article? Did you experience legislature interference? Did you experience faculty's personal views being reflected in your teaching? Did you get affirmation or rebuking of your original world view before education. Did you feel enlightened or have your original views changed after being exposed to broader viewpoints? Edit: - Would good educators in your area be fired for expressing dissenting view points based on the composition of your legislative bodies? - Do you believe there are more progressive, liberal, or conservative educators? - Do you believe there should be a mix of all viewpoints? - Do you believe research topics should be a mix of views, if the research crosses from scientific into political/ideology realms?

Indiana lawmakers join GOP-led states trying to target college tenure apnews.com

I'm curious if anyone feels they get the same degree of workplace protection the concept of tenure for professors? - Some contractors get protection if it's built into their contracts - Unions create termination restrictions - Military gets sanctuary for their last two years before twenty years service, then usually kicked out, unless they're generals - you can't legally fire someone because color, religion, orientation, etc What makes professors different or not different? You can fire retail workers for anything not illegal Based on your stance, if professors should be special, why? I saw some interesting quotes: > But estimates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show, among the states reporting data, Oregon had the highest increase in synthetic opioid overdose fatalities when comparing 2019 and the 12-month period ending June 30, a 13-fold surge from 84 deaths to more than 1,100. > Despite public perception, the law has made some progress by directing $265 million dollars of cannabis tax revenue toward standing up the state's new addiction treatment infrastructure. I guess since only cannabis is sold, it's the only taxable substance in the mix. > Some lawmakers have suggested focusing on criminalizing public drug use rather than possession. Alex Kreit, assistant professor of law at Northern Kentucky University and director of its Center on Addiction Law and Policy, said such an approach could help curb visible drug use on city streets but wouldn't address what's largely seen as the root cause: homelessness. Homelessness leads to drug use? Or drug use leads to homelessness? Couldn't it be either? > In the first year after the law took effect in February 2021, only 1% of people who received citations for possession sought help via the hotline, state auditors found. > Critics of the law say this doesn't create an incentive to seek treatment. Thoughts: - Maybe just start with cannabis and see how that goes? Or do we really need to progress collectively to heroine, meth, cocaine, MDMA? - Is the major public health crisis the use of more illicit drugs, or overdoses? Is possible that recreational use of cocaine/MDMA/others wouldn't be as big of a crisis as meth and fentanyl? - Should heroine be legal for use? - Should MDMA be legal for use? - Should cocaine be legal for use? ( I am not advocating for or against use of these substances with this post. Posted for discussion/interest. Questions are posed for discussion. )

Indiana Supreme Court rules against John Rust in Republican primary-related matter www-wane-com.cdn.ampproject.org

Now, before you go ape shit on Republicans are all.... Instead, I'm curious about the matter of running vs voting. Do you believe you should only be able to run for a party you voted for? Does this protect the party? Or limit candidates (assuming it's a candidate you don't disagree with)? Are there down sides to this? What is if a moderate ran for Republican, but he voted Democrat a few times, or vise versa? Would it be good if a middle of the road person ran instead of a more partisan candidate? Lastly, I'm not advocating for this guy. Only discussion about the situation.

Indiana House committee OKs psilocybin bill www.chicagotribune.com

Far out dude... I am super interested to see how this goes. I've heard studies from western states have shown encouraging results in some people. It only took 50 years to circle back to considering these things might have benefits beyond getting high or hearing colors.

Is there a term for being right and then your opposition getting taught a lesson proving you were right? EPA calls off cyber regulations for water sector. cyberscoop.com

On July 25, 2023, the states of Missouri, Arkansas, and Iowa, along with intervenors American Water Works Association and National Rural Water Association, petitioned the Eighth Circuit to review the EPA’s new rule. This rule requires states to review and report cybersecurity threats to their public water systems (PWS). The states’ brief argues that the EPA’s Cybersecurity Rule unlawfully imposes new legal requirements on states and PWSs. It also contends that the rule exceeds the EPA’s statutory authority by ignoring congressional actions that limit cybersecurity requirements to large PWSs and by changing the criteria for sanitary surveys through a memorandum And then there a **bunch** of PLCs at water utilities compromised: https://www.politico.com/news/2023/11/28/federal-government-investigating-multiple-hacks-of-us-water-utilities-00128977 https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/alerts/2023/11/28/exploitation-unitronics-plcs-used-water-and-wastewater-systems https://apnews.com/article/water-utilities-hackers-cybersecurity-1c475f5d2ef3b5d52410c93bdeab3aad https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/hackers-breach-us-water-facility-via-exposed-unitronics-plcs/ So many more... Now, I can understand arguments about jurisdictions, but would the exact same requirements coming from CISA instead of the EMP have been OK, or where these places just whining about any kind of oversight? At the end of the day, they look a little foolish.

Google Pulls the Plug: The End of Third-Party Cookies and What it Means | TWiT.TV twit.tv

This episode of Security Now covered Google's plan to deprecate third party cookies and the reaction from advertising organizations and websites. The articles and the opinions of the show hosts are that it may have negative or unintended consequences as rather than relying on Google's proposed ad selection scheme being run on the client side (hiding information from the advertiser), instead they are demanding first party information from the sites regarding their user's identification. The article predicts that rather than privacy increasing, a majority of websites may demand user registration so they can collect personal details and force user consent to provide that data to advertisers. What's your opinion of website advertising, privacy, and data collection? - Would you refuse to visit websites that force registration even if the account is free? - What's all the fuss about, you don't care? - Is advertising a necessary evil in fair trade for content? - Would this limit your visiting of websites to only a narrow few you are willing to trade personal details for? - Is this a bad thing for the internet experience as whole, or just another progression of technology? - Is this no different from using any other technology platform that's free (If it's free, you're the product)? - Should website owners just accept a lower revenue model and adapt their business, rather than seeking higher / unfair revenues from privacy invasive practices of the past?
