    I'm back. Didja miss me?

Have to politely disagree with Mr Ager's analysis/conjecture. While I may concede that some abuse may have happened in Alex's childhood, there's no solid or even implied link to either parent being the abuser. Unfortunately, people hang for such circumstantial or presumed evidence. I'll generously grant Ager that there may have been sexual abuse on the part of the law (Deltoid, police) and if any case may be made regarding the parents' culpability, it possibly would be their turning a blind eye to the presumed sexual abuse (there's a legal term for this but it escapes me at the moment).

The Terrible Secret of Mulholland Drive

I'm not a big fan of YouTubers analyzing Lynch's works but I felt this one fills in the gaps in the film's popular dream-logic "explanation"…

::: spoiler Spoiler alert like the film's continuance after the main character's death, which always stuck in my throat. :::

It's a little long, around an hour, but if you can overlook host Rosseter's terrible David Lynch impression, it's definitely well thought out.

    Does anyone speak hairdresser?

No. Not even hairdressers speak hairdresserese. Like drummers, hairdressers/stylists/barbers will all appear as if all their attention is 100% on your description but they are thinking about something within their social circle (hence the real concern on their face). Like drummers, if there isn't some kind of natural affinity between you and who cuts your hair, you will never get what you're looking for.

That said, many clients haven't the proverbial "faintest idea" of what actually works for their face shape and stylists, if they're not suffering too strong of a hangover 🤣, do try to work within those confines.

You can only go in with your remarkably clear and detailed description —still open to interpretation as your hairstyle is not an airplane fuselage, with precise measurements and tolerances—in hand and still hope for the best. Apologies for the length of this reply.

DISCLAIMER: my ex-wife was and still is a fine hair stylist.

I loved A Scanner Darkly. I have to say of all the movies I've seen based on PKD's writings, it's the most faithful to the source material. Meanwhile, The Man in The High Castle, while you may find it entertaining, is not a "proper adaption;" being a TV series, how could it have been?

I also agree with @otacon239@feddit.de regarding Richard Linklater's Waking Life, which was like an animated version of Linklater's first film, Slacker, also on the "must-see" list.

One last thing regarding Waking Life: that movie was like the dry-run, stylistically and technologically, for A Scanner Darkly.

Post icon images: URL vs image

We see posts everyday, some (most) with a square-cropped image to the left. Some of these post images, let's call them "post icons", are there because on the "Create Post" form there is a text entry field explicitly pointing to the author's uploaded image. Otherwise, the post icon is an image from the link entered in the URL text entry field. Are you with me so far? I hope so. Now, sometimes the URL returns an image and sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't, a default Lemmy link icon appears. [Here's an example.](https://midwest.social/post/8409788) The linked page has an image but it doesn't appear as a post icon. 1. How can I get the URL to return an image I know is on the linked page. Not necessarily a specific image but any image from the link. 2. Is there a way to use an author-chosen image when no linked image exists (or if I'd like a different image)? I've tried using both the URL and the Image fields but unfortunately the Image link takes preference. I hope I've been clear. Please don't hesitate to ask questions. Thanks! **EDIT:** added the post icon image.

We've been following this since it first came to my attention in mid-November [here](https://midwest.social/post/5535609) and [here](https://midwest.social/post/5603894). > It's the latest action General Motors is taking against Renaissance Center Management Co., the private security force that was created by the company to patrol Detroit's iconic riverfront RenCen. GM contracts with G4S to provide the security services through the company, according to court records. > Officers can no longer carry handcuffs, according to Kevin Kelly, a spokesperson for GM. The number of officers allowed to carry guns has also been reduced, although some still carry weapons for protection against dangers like active shooters, he said. Donald Calloway’s new studio at Irwin House www.metrotimes.com

Today's post is pure ego: an article written by [a *kokujin* journalist](https://randiahcamillegreen.com/about/) ( 🤣 💘 ) that I love about [a Detroit artist](https://www.cbsnews.com/detroit/news/detroit-artist-is-making-a-splash-on-the-art-scene/) whose work I love. So sue me. No one's stopping *you* from doing likewise… ![Inside Calloway’s new studio space at Irwin House](https://media2.metrotimes.com/metrotimes/imager/u/blog/34966892/donald_calloway_work.jpg?cb=1703847840) > Calloway’s art career has spanned over three decades. His work has been featured at Arts, Beats & Eats, the Palmer Park Art Fair, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Detroit Institute of Arts, Arts Extended, inside Highland Park’s Avalon Village, and many, many more. > The last straw, he says of his Greektown spot, was when he came home to a pair of rats having sex in front of his door. They stopped and stared him straight in the face as if they were challenging him, “What you gone do?” Shortly after, he decided to move. While working in slightly different media, I think Van Gogh and Monet (among others) also said something similar… > …when I ask him why food and cooking utensils appear so much in his work, Calloway says, “I never wanted to be a starving artist.”

First-time homebuyers in Michigan find answer to prayers with these programs eu.detroitnews.com

Just in case you potential homeowners missed this when first proposed, The Detroit News covers how it may be possible for to have financial assistance on a downpayment on a new home! "Land…they ain't makin' any more of it." > Metro Detroit shoppers looking for their first home have been especially affected by higher prices: In October, Detroit posted the [largest year-over-year increase](https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/2023/12/26/home-prices-extend-records-rising-for-a-ninth-straight-month/72031715007/) in home prices, 8.1%, among 20 large U.S. cities, according to data released this week by S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller. > “Time and again research reveals that the down payment is the single largest hurdle first-time homebuyers need to overcome to attain homeownership,” said Sonu Mittal, Freddie Mac's single-family senior vice president of acquisitions, in a statement at the time of the program’s launch. “But finding and comparing the many programs and their guidelines is challenging," he said. "DPA One delivers a one-stop shop at no cost that brings lenders and their borrowers greater detail and visibility into these programs while seamlessly connecting the right assistance program with the lender, housing counselors and borrowers who need this assistance the most.” *** Alternate links: - [archive.md](https://archive.md/dRxKc) - [1ft.io](https://1ft.io/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Feu.detroitnews.com%2Fstory%2Fbusiness%2F2023%2F12%2F28%2Ffirst-time-homebuyers-in-michigan-find-answer-to-prayers-with-these-programs%2F71908255007%2F)

Detroit Pistons make NBA history! But... www.metrotimes.com

…it's because no other team in the history of the NBA has achieved(?) **27 consecutive losses!** Rock and roll! > Paced by Cade Cunningham’s 41 points, the Pistons’ fans alternated recent chants of “Sell the team!” to bursts of “Let’s Go Pistons!” and “Dee-Fence!” for at least one night. But, as the home team faded at the end, the chants of “Sell the team!” returned. > “I actually talked to the players about this the other day, with all the losses here, what we still have is a very good future,” [Beverly Hills billionaire and team owner Tom] Gores said. “No. 1, we have an amazing set of young players. High character, high talent. This set of players, and I know them individually and I saw them the other day, we’re in a great spot with our young talent . . . I’m willing to do whatever it takes for this organization to be successful. As much as the vision feels blurry to me . . . “ > “Nobody wants this kind of thing attached to them,” said [Pistons coach Monty] Williams, whose contract reaches at least six years and maybe more. “It weighs on us every day.” It weighs on us too, pal. 🤦‍♂️

WDIV: Christine Beatty talks about closing Kwame chapter www.clickondetroit.com

    > She [Beatty] moved back home two years ago from Atlanta for the reason that many children come back home – to care for a parent. Her mom was diagnosed with cancer, and just passed away in August. She admits it has been an excruciating two years. > But questions about her job and her restitution to the city of Detroit has put her back in the spotlight. Which is why she wanted to tell her story. …and from The Detroit Free Press, M.L. Elrick's take… - [Christine Beatty is back, refusing to pay restitution to Detroit](https://1ft.io/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Feu.freep.com%2Fstory%2Fnews%2Fcolumnists%2Fml-elrick%2F2023%2F12%2F17%2Fchristine-beatty-restitution-detroit-heat-warmth-fund%2F71840380007%2F) > In a situation reminiscent of the bad old days, when Kilpatrick and Beatty ran city hall like an employment agency for friends and family, Beatty was hired by one of her best buds from high school. THAW CEO Saunteel Jenkins also hired Beatty's mother, but she told me her longtime friendship with Beatty was not a factor in her decision to hire her fellow Cass Tech Class of 1988 alumna and her mom. More on that later. > Beatty refused repeated requests to discuss her gig or her life since leaving Detroit for Atlanta about 15 years ago. That may be because her friends and colleagues made it clear she also didn't want to answer my questions about why we should trust Beatty to do better at THAW than she did while helping run one of the most corrupt nonprofits in Detroit history.

Facing 'agony' and loss here and abroad, Detroit's Muslim-Jewish Forum hopes to build shared peace www.michiganradio.org

Here's something positive instead of the usual goverment officials fomenting and dividing the people… > The grassroots, interfaith forum [The [Muslim-Jewish Forum](https://www.facebook.com/muslimjewishforum/about_details)] has been barely active for the last few years. The death of one of the informal group's founding members — Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue President [Samantha Woll](https://www.michiganradio.org/public-safety/2023-12-13/man-charged-with-break-in-murder-in-killing-of-detroit-synagogue-leader) — and ongoing bloodshed in the Gaza strip presents a lot of pain and tension for both religious minorities. > Razi Jafri is a Muslim [documentary filmmaker](https://www.michiganradio.org/podcast/stateside/2023-12-05/stateside-podcast-the-u-s-militarys-muslim-chaplains) who co-founded the Forum alongside Samantha Woll and others. Speaking to attendees of Thursday’s gathering, Jafri said the Forum is founded partly on the belief that “no two religions in the world” are more similar than Islam and Judaism. And he noted, both religions have a large community presence in southeast Michigan — though both are still very much [in the minority](https://www.prri.org/research/2020-census-of-american-religion/#page-section-1). > “The interactions between the communities have been minimal,” Jafri said. “There's been a lot of tension. … While those issues get worked out, there's no reason for us not to gather and share space with each other, break bread, celebrate each other's holidays.” > “It behooves us to really come together and in a painful time like this, to understand each other's perspectives,” Jafri said. “And really build relationships and friendships that could help create a more peaceful environment.” Yeah…we can only hope. ☮

Hamtramck City Council votes to rename Holbrook Ave. "Palestine Ave." www.metrotimes.com

    > The renaming will not have any impact on official postal addresses or other legal designations and is solely a show of “solidarity, remembrance, and compassion for the lives lost in Gaza.” > One council member who voted “no” said he was against the resolution because of Hamtramck’s controversial “neutrality flag resolution,” which [banned LGBTQ+ pride flags](https://www.metrotimes.com/news/hamtramck-city-council-bans-pride-flag-from-city-property-33370369) from being flown on city property. The policy also prohibits the display of religious, ethnic, racial, and political flags and states that the city won’t provide “special treatment to any group,” though critics say the resolution, which was voted on unanimously, was mainly rooted in homophobia. Meanwhile, over at [The Detroit Free Press](https://eu.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/wayne/2023/12/18/hamtramck-street-to-be-renamed-palestine-avenue-in-support-of-gaza/71954525007/)… > Carolyn Normandin, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League Michigan, called supporting one side of the conflict divisive, adding that Israel is fighting to fend off future attacks like the Oct. 7 one by Hamas militants. Some 1,200 Israelis were killed in that attack and more than 240 others were kidnapped. More than half of the hostages still remain in captivity, according to USA Today. > Rabbi Simcha Tolwin of Jewish Learning Center Aish Detroit meanwhile said the council "is festering a movement that ... in fact is just a call for the genocide of the Jews. > "Naming a street Palestine Ave. shows that Hamtramck supports terrorism, and gives the terrorists the support they need to keep at their goals of genocide through rape, murder and kidnapping of civilians," he said in an email, referencing the Hamas attack.

Federal Railroad Administration Advances Rail Connection Between Detroit and Metro Airport michiganchronicle.com

    > Central to this initiative is Amtrak’s ambitious Cleveland–Toledo–Detroit/Pontiac corridor. This proposed route would facilitate travel from Pontiac to Cleveland, with strategic stops in Troy, Royal Oak, Detroit, Toledo, and Sandusky. Notably, this week saw the inclusion of two key destinations: Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus and Cleveland Hopkins Airport in Ohio. Under the Corridor Identification and Development Program (Corridor ID), this corridor is set to receive up to $500,000 for planning a new conventional rail system. Another idea looong overdue. I guess more than 100 years of inertia is bound to render civic planning a little…rusty.

Mitch Albom: Say the word — when it comes to schools' Jewish harassment policies, they can't eu.freep.com

Seven Mile Bloods gang leader Billy Arnold guilty on all counts in murder retrial eu.detroitnews.com

    > Jurors deliberated for approximately 6 1/2 hours following a six-week trial in front of Chief U.S. District Judge Sean Cox in Detroit before returning guilty verdicts on 22 charges that included two murder counts that carry mandatory terms of life in federal prison. > Arnold, 37, was accused of killing two men and trying to kill eight others while helping lead a violent street gang that from 2008-15 fueled the nation's opioid crisis by distributing OxyContin pain pills and other drugs. > The convictions mark the culmination of a prolonged federal attack on the Seven Mile Bloods and a high-profile attempt to stem violent crime in Detroit. The government's case was highlighted in "[Death by Instagram](https://www.detroitnews.com/in-depth/story-series/death-by-instagram/2021/10/12/death-by-instagram-inside-red-zone-detroit-news/6095381001/)," a serial narrative in The News in 2018 that described how federal prosecutors locally had used racketeering laws to secure almost 100 convictions of violent gangsters, bikers, methamphetamine dealers and former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

Jews in Michigan mark Hanukkah with resolve amid fears eu.freep.com

    > That determination was seen Thursday night as Jews and others gathered at Campus Martius for the 13th annual lighting of a giant menorah standing 26-feet tall that organizers say is the biggest public Hanukkah display in Michigan. Now more than ever, it's important for Jewish people to be able to be open about their identity even though some may feel more anxious about it, said Jewish leaders. Tensions could be heard at the menorah lighting ceremony, where some protesters chanted "cease-fire now" as a rabbi and a daughter of an Israeli hostage held by Hamas spoke. Other speakers included Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who noted she was the highest-ranking statewide Jewish official in state history; and U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Birmingham, who shouted her support for Israel and Jewish people. > Last year, [Oak Park resident Eliza] Klein helped light the first candle of the big menorah in a program called Menorah in the D and this year, two family members of two hostages still held by Hamas helped light the candle. Yair Moses and Ella Ben-Ami, two Israelis who are visiting metro Detroit this week to tell their stories, spoke Wednesday at a news conference at Honigman law firm organized by Chabad and others the day before the menorah lighting. They said that Hamas kidnapped on Oct. 7 both of their parents, later releasing their mothers, but their fathers remain hostages. They plan to speak Friday at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, the largest Jewish house of worship in Michigan. > At the Chabad event at Campus Martius, Jewish Voices for Peace - Detroit, a leftwing group that often criticizes Israel, held a separate Hanukkah event, with a different message, calling for a cease-fire. Chants of "cease-fire now" could be heard during the Chabad event, which Jewish Voices for Peace alleged has "militaristic messaging." Court filing: Trump campaign 'encouraged rioting' at Huntington Place after 2020 vote eu.freep.com

*Huntington Place?* Oh, you mean ~~Cobo Hall~~ ~~Cobo Center~~ uhm, ~~TCM~~ TCF Center? Oh, it's not called that anymore? Why don't they just call it [*Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac Center*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antoine_de_la_Mothe_Cadillac) (or *Cadillac Center* for short) and be done with it? Geez! > The texts from the Trump campaign employee "encouraged rioting and other methods of obstruction when (the Trump campaign employee) learned that the vote count was trending in favor of" President Joe Biden, the court filing said. > A record 167,000 absentee ballots were counted at Huntington Place by the evening of Nov. 4 as crowds shouted, "Stop the Count!" The scene included yelling, taunting, cheering, fists pounding on glass and unruly challengers being arrested by police. Happy Birthday, Ellen Burstyn! www.imdb.com

One of my personal favorite actors, award-winning [Ellen Burstyn](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_Burstyn) is probably best known for her role as the possessed Regan's mother, Chris MacNeil, in [*The Exorcist*](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070047) and again in the recent (but less charming) [*The Exorcist: Believer*](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12921446). But this fabuous lady has a equally fabulous career 50 years strong! She is one of only 24 people to have achieved [The Triple Crown of Acting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_Crown_of_Acting); her inclusion in this elite set are her Oscar® for [*Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Doesn%27t_Live_Here_Anymore) in 1974, a Tony for the stage version of [*Same Time, Next Year*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same_Time,_Next_Year_(play)) in 1975, and an Emmy for her appearance on [*Law and Order: SVU*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_and_Order:_SVU) in 2009. Among her more acclaimed films are [*The Last Picture Show*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Picture_Show), the aforementioned *Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore*, the film version of [*Same Time, Next Year*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same_Time,_Next_Year_(film)), [*How To Make An American Quilt*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_Make_an_American_Quilt), [*Requim For A Dream*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Requiem_for_a_Dream), and [*The Fountain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fountain_(film))*. And this magnificent lady was born here in Detroit 91 years ago today! I'd like to wish Ms Burstyn a most wonderful day! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🎂🍾

Detroit on track for fewest homicides in more than 50 years wdet.org

"Murder City" no more…well, almost… > In 2018, Detroit had 261 homicides, the fewest number since 1966. Through Nov. 30, 2023, Detroit has experienced only 228 homicides, putting the city on track to finish the year well below the 2018 record low. That's still around four murders a week by my public-school-education calculations. Still, better than the [714](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_Detroit#History) murders logged for 1974, *n'est-ce pas?* **Did You Know?:** According to [World Atlas 2023](https://www.worldatlas.com/cities/the-most-dangerous-cities-in-the-world.html), Detroit is the 29^th^ most dangerous city in the world, and the 5^th^ most dangerous in the United States?

The Motor City Public Transit Blues eu.freep.com

**Editorial:** The [People Mover](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_People_Mover). The [QLine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QLine). Two proof-of-concept tram systems that cover about as much ground as the kiddie-car train at The Detroit Zoo. How is it that Detroit—city that used to be mentioned in the same breath as New York, London or Paris—just can't get an effective mass transit system. *One* bus per *hour* per line. I distinctly remember a bus ride from [MCC South Campus](https://www.macomb.edu/about-macomb/maps-directions/south-campus.html) to the [Cass Tech](https://www.detroitk12.org/CassTech) area that took, beside the Gen. Patton-like coordination between various bus schedules, three hours including the transfer at the [Royal Oak Transit Center](https://www.smartbus.org/Services/Services-By-Community/Royal-Oak). A trip that would have generously taken 45 minutes by car. It's not for lack of trying, as the linked article elaborates. Even [Cleveland](https://www.riderta.com/) has a functional public transit, for the love of Colman! Chicago can connect the surrounding cities, why can't Detroit? Yes, I'm familiar with the plethora of ~~excuses~~ reasons of varying veracity. Only recently Detroit's [saviour|plunderer] and QLine namer Dan Gilbert has [seen the light](https://eu.freep.com/story/money/business/2023/11/30/dan-gilbert-detroit-free-press-breakfast-career/71729706007/) but I'm compelled to question his motives after his near-total silence on the matter until now. Sorry for the rant but this is a subject that has stuck in my throat like a small fish bone for longer than I care to remember. And now back to our regularly scheduled program…
