Thank you for the explanation! What you say makes complete sense, I agree :)
I suppose it's only films, but I wanted to ask, just to make sure. Some TV series are works of art, with amazing frames. The series *Severance*, for example, has [extremely beautiful shooting and frames](https://www.thewrap.com/severance-cinematography-explained). *Moderators*: feel free to delete this post – sorry for the outlier! But maybe a "films only" can be added in the sidebar?
An endearing and even moving short clip of Buster singing "June Night" and "Casey Jones".

I think that explains it! It had 26 characters.

Ah I saw this only now, otherwise I'd have subscribed to your instance!
[IrfanView](https://www.irfanview.com) is a great piece of software for Windows. One of those "jack of all trades, master of none". It works as a simple image & video viewer and browser, can do simple and not-so-simple image manipulation, and even batch jobs, like conversion, on selections of images in folders. For Linux (and other platforms) there's [**XnView MP**](https://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp) that offers extremely similar functionalities.

It worked perfectly. I really don't know how to thank you.

One question: with "main account' on step 3 you mean my account here at Lemmy.world?
I don't quite know how to post in a community on another instance: it doesn't appear if I search for communities here in Lemmy.world.

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried from laptop with Firefox and Chromium, then from my phone (Firefox). But I see the same problem on all.
In the past two days I've been trying to create a community, but without success. I insert the name (with the allowed characters), the display name, and so on. But when I click on `create` a spinning wheel appears for a second or two, then goes back to `create` and nothing has happened. I created two communities previously (10 days ago or so) without problems. I imagine it's just an effect of the current load for Lemmy.world, but wanted to ask just in case.

PS: there's also another functionality of Klipper that I use from time to time: you can make the whole "killring" appear, and choose the entry you want to paste with the mouse: as you click it it's entered. This is also bound to a key (in my case S-w
) and works no matter which window I'm in.

Agree 200%!

Gotcha. Yes, haven't found anything that allows that specifically. But in my case I don't need to enable klipper; it's always active. No matter which windows I'm in, pressing C-v
will paste whatever it's in the clipboard; whereas pressing e.g. S-v C-v
will choose the previous item in the clipboard and then paste it.

Unfortunately I didn't enjoy the 1st season, just like other commenters here. A preliminary reason could be that the story is very different from the book, which is one of my most favourite sci-fi books ever. But even simply seeing this series as something different from the book, if found it too cheap: the characters are half-stereotypes, the events are what you'd expect, usual blood and sex to attract viewers...
Should go without saying, just my personal opinion and tastes. I'm happy that others enjoyed the series and I hope it'll made them curious to read the books.
[This](https://myanimelist.net/anime/52619/Jidou_Hanbaiki_ni_Umarekawatta_Ore_wa_Meikyuu_wo_Samayou) starts tomorrow. The premise is really one of a kind. I'm very curious to see how they pull this off!

For those who loved Person of Interest: at the moment I'm watching Forever and it's giving me similar feelings as Person of Interest did. It's a bit of a vague statement, I know, but I can't really put my finger on what or why. Just give it a try if you haven't already. The background story is different, but many elements feel very similar.
Curious to know if anyone else see some similarities and can actually flesh them out concretely.

Yes this is the community with most subscribers I've found so far. I'm interested in a community where manga are discussed, recommended, and so on. At the moment the vast majority of the posts here ("[DISC]" – does that stand for Discord?) seems to be about announcements of new chapters, and I wonder if they're taking over a bit too much. Maybe it's possible to create a community specifically for announcements? Or any other solutions? – Only if other members share my point of view as well, of course.
I'm moving from the manga@lemmy.ml community, which seems to be focused more on new-chapter announcements than manga discussion and recommendations. But I wonder if this is actually the goal of this community. Moderators: would it be possible to add some description on the community sidebar? Cheers!
I was wondering whether this community focuses on discussing and recommending manga, or mostly on "manga announce" instead, from the majority of the posts I'm seeing. The sidebar doesn't give much information. NB: just in case I'm being misread, this is not a criticism! Just trying to understand whether I'm interested in subscribing or not.

It sure isn't finished. Cats are purrfectionists.
...Or actually I don't know. Maybe the cat has lost interest in that masterpiece and has started on another one somewhere else... Spread the damage.

I also saw similar glitches from time to time, that's why I always install from terminal now. I'll be curious to see what comments people leave about this - sorry for not being able to help.

Cheers, that was my problem I think, lack of patience. Thank you for the heads up, I'll start it again!
Possibly another problem is that it's a translation. The language or way of writing is nothing special.

True, I get your point. I can try to create a community for this - or maybe you do? I would join.

Octave is great! Just wanted to add for completeness that Matlab is also available for Linux (in some places you're simply forced to use Matlab, so it's good to know you don't need to leave Linux for that).
**NB**: According to some of the suggestions below, this post has been made into a community: <https://lemmy.ca/c/software_alternatives_linux> Hope to see many of view posting software alternatives there! Many members of this community are computer users who recently moved to Linux from other OSs, Windows in particular. Having established their work and hobbies on a particular software base, they often encounter difficulties trying to find similar software on Linux. I'd like this to be a sort of board where members comment about some software alternative they're looking for, and other members sub-comment with possible solutions. What's a solution? It's important to be broad-minded about this when switching to Linux: - **Exactly the same software could be available for Linux.** - **Different software but with similar critical features could be available for Linux.** - **It could be possible to use emulators (such as Wine) of the old OS.** - **Finally, one can change one's perspective or workflow, in such a way that the old software is not needed any longer, but is replaced with other software of a different kind (this may actually lead to much improved workflows).** *(Moderators: feel free to take over this post. Also please let me know if a similar board exists already here, so I delete this.)*

Wow, that's the same reason I also chose the Nvidia gpu: for the vapour-chamber cooling (GeForce RTX 3060, lowest model that brought the vapour chamber). But I've noted a somewhat better performance with the Nvidia when watching videos. So now I have it on-demand. – But of course different people have different needs and preferences, so I totally get your settings.

Great initiative sharing here too. I agree on the hope and strategy!
What you suggests makes the Nvidia unusable though, doesn't it? I noticed that tlp
helped in my case (but on X1E4!). See the setting mentioned in this comment, and also this article. Maybe they can be of use – maybe not.

If you right-click on the Klipper tray icon, select "Configure..." and then "Shortcuts", you can assign shortcuts to move back and forth in the kill ring, and to paste. I have assigned S-v for backwards and S-C-v for forward. Then the usual C-v will paste. The tray icon also shows you the current selection (and the ones above and below) in the killring, as you move through it.
...at least for X1 Extreme.
Today [Fanfox.net](https://fanfox.net) seem to be offline. Anyone knows more about this?

What I don't understand about the ending is this, if anyone has hypotheses (or knows from the books):
::: spoiler spolier Why do they project a green world in the helmet of those who go out? Doesn't it defeat the purpose? :::

And it isn't just a matter of numbers, but of content quality too. My impression is that those who are leaving Reddit for the fediverse alternatives right now are also those that create more meaningful and useful content. So the loss for Reddit is already much larger than the numbers tell.
This also connects with the strange way of reasoning about "making profit", and with some comments I've read saying "did Reddit users expect a free lunch?". The point is that the value of Reddit comes exclusively from the content, and the content was given for free to Reddit by the users. Reddit was having a free lunch too. It'd be funny if people started to say "You want me to post and create content on this platform? Well pay me then".

Completely agree! The finale left room for a new season or a new related series.
> *You are being watched. The government has a secret system, a machine that spies on you every hour of every day. I designed the machine to detect acts of terror, but it sees everything. Violent crimes involving ordinary people. The government considers these people "irrelevant". We don't. Hunted by the authorities, we work in secret. You'll never find us. But victim or perpetrator, if your number's up... we'll find you.* Who remembers and misses this outstanding show? Will we ever enjoy the like again? It's still so actual in these AI days.

Turturro and Walken were simply fantastic in their roles. Long way from More Cowbell...
[Severance](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11280740) was one of the most beautiful series I watched of late. Not just intriguing, but beautiful, artistically beautiful. Very happy to hear it's been renewed for a second season. Let's discuss it! :) PS: and here you can find [*Severance: The Lexington Letter*](https://severance.wiki/severance-_the_lexington_letter) – the cherry on the show.
My main question is this: Is it worth switching to Ubuntu Pro? Actually I see it's free for personal use on one computer. I'd be curious to hear the experience of those of you who switched, and also the motivation of those who didn't switch. This question is partly related to another one: I'd like to economically support Linux in general and Ubuntu in particular. Would switching to Ubuntu Pro (and paying) help in this regard? Or which other ways of supporting are out there? (As you understood, I'm somewhat of a newbie in the Linuxverse.)

This appeared on Reddit a while ago... User deleted unfortunately.
Some time ago on Reddit someone poste a link to a video meme about Saitama/One Punch Man and Linux man pages. That subreddit is now private, so I can't access the link and no net search seems to unearth it. Can someone share it here? was it a youtube link?
I just installed Kubuntu 22.04 on a Thinkpad, letting it take over (on purpose) the whole hard drive. Everything is working fine so far, all hardware seems to be working. If I take a look at `software-properties`, the "Other sources" list is empty: there are no ppa's added at the moment. On another Thinkpad I have Ubuntu 20.04 pre-installed. In the "Other sources" list I see some OEM repositories: they must have been added by the Lenovo people before shipping. I have two questions about this: 1. How necessary or useful are these OEM ppas? I fear that they may have important improvements for specific machines. 2. How do you find these OEM ppas? For example, what should I do to find such a ppa for the first Thinkpad (with Kubuntu), and see if it has useful software or drivers? *Edit*: just as an example, there's this list: http://oem.archive.canonical.com/dists/ But I have no idea how to choose from there, it's a bit of a labyrint and the names don't reveal very much. For example, there are several "jammy-..." folders; and if you enter one of them, say "jammy", there are many subfolders with very cryptic names.
I for one was tired of Reddit. With the latest events it's good to look for alternatives. This community here is created in case the one(s) on Reddit disappear. I'm not very interested in moderating; so to any old mods from Reddit: take over!
