@Fubarberry I've started playing Cities:Skylines (the original one) again, and downloaded multiple mods from the Steam Workshop. It froze one day and I couldn't fix it in any way than to shut down my Deck. Every upgrades I did to that city were just gone.
Thankfully I managed to improve my public transit by adding more lines, more buses and changing some routes, as well as adding a few more metro stations as infill (sadly I have to redo all the metro lines all the time when I do this).
I play vanilla for now, as I want to make the most out of it without DLCs first. Then I think I will get the snowfall DLC in order to get trams going (as a European I don't understand why are trams, and partly even trolleybuses, hidden under DLCs but metros aren't, as in my country almost all larger cities have trams, yet only the biggest has a metro. But I digress).

I got into the rabbit hole of YouTube videos about iPods, iPod refurbishments, upgrade and other media players in general. It's so fascinating that there are devices designed just for listening to music, especially since even the old Nokia phones came equipped with music players or had music playing capabilities. In fact, I used my phone to listen to music even before getting a smartphone (yes, I know regular mp3 players were a thing, but it was much easier to view what you were playing on a regular color LCD screen with an actual UI). Even more fascinating is seeing people actually upgrading these devices with more storage, larger batteries and new capabilities like wireless charging, Bluetooth connectivity (to connect them to wireless headsets), even making them able to stream from youtube.com/watch?v=ZxdhG1OhVn….
In fact, I am surprised that as of speaking, in 2024, there is still a market for music players, some even being Android based and with Google Play Store access, so you could install Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, YouTube Music or whatever you can find out there (be it a streaming service, music player or whatnot).
This, along with the fact that (as I said) I never owned a dedicated media player myself (none of the likes of an iPod at least), I think is what made me to pull an older phone out of the drawer and try to repurpose it as a dedicated media player myself. And so far, it has been a success for the most part. I don't know how will I use it outside my house in the real world (even inside the house as well, as I already have the bulk of the music on my PC), but it's just so fascinating. If you're interested, I can create a separate post on the DIY community so you can get some ideas.

@Riven Probably phones without headphone jacks are those that can no longer be used as regular FM radios - as the antenna was actually the headset (at least that's my experience) - and another reason why phones without the jack suck. Never had a phone with a built-in FM antenna FWIW.
But yea, I do get your point. Phones could do so much more than accessing Facebook, Instagram and posting photos there or something like that.

@shortwavesurfer There's no way you compare something as mundane as this to mass murder. And be sure that every country's government has all the means necessary to prosecute you for stuff like this, sooner or later.
Anyway, for me there are some useful such apps that I use:
- One is for my city's public transit - really useful, it even displays the vehicle position in real time so you can make up your mind on your route.
- One is for train tickets (you can also do related stuff as well, like check if your train is late).
- One is to check if there are any breakdowns in the heat distribution system to see if I won't have heat overnight.
I'm sure as hell there are some others, but I did not need them so far. If the government was to spy on me, it could install some malware or some sort without resorting to the Play Store.

@Blaze A colleague of mine had the M8. Man, what a great device! It had awesome cameras for that time and could even record videos in slow motion. Nowadays, I take this feature for granted for the last 3 phones I had, but at that time this just seemed revolutionary!

There's plenty of other microblogging servers out there, as microblogging is overwhelmingly served via AP and not only. There's even a Nextcloud app for that.

@BearOfaTime That's odd. My experience with micro USB cables is actually the poorer one. Cables would have their pins worn down all the time and become loose. My current phone has USB C and I had no problem so far. I use the same cable since I purchased it.

@Blaze I'm not buying phones that often, but I recently changed to a Nokia G22 (yes, they also have phones with jack), and one of the things that made me decide on that was the jack as well. I got a pair of wireless headsets from work and I can say they're pretty good, but I am still not over the thought that I have one more thing to charge its battery every once in a while. Wired headphones are pretty much okay and I don't see any problem with them that would make me switch (at least right now).
Edit: I almost forgot. I also listen to the (FM) Radio, so I need the wired headsets to be used as an antenna.

@jeena I only use DeepL to translate and that's it. I also started taking notes in .md files, so that could make for a good use case in the future if there was an AI that I could use without connecting to the internet (e.g. to only let me tell stuff based on the files I got). Otherwise I am pretty reticent on AI. Perhaps I watched too many fiction movies, but I am afraid it will become too sentient and somehow escape the human oversight, thus creating havoc in our lives.
Or maybe a way to use existing cloud services like Google Drive or OneDrive or Dropbox for this purpose? I just have a bunch of .deb files and I think this could be really useful. Plus I will be offloading some of my storage 😁

You do get to travel for a while to do your errands or hang out with people, as most people usually go downtown to get to the "third place", as the old town is filled with bars, pubs, restaurants etc. And indeed, transit connectivity is good, but the years of neglect in the 1990s and early 2000s gave it a bad rep., so people were more inclined to get a car and ask for more car infrastructure. And yes, newer supermarkets post 1990 were indeed built with fairly large acres of land dedicated to parking.
