Can you please share your backup strategies for linux? I'm curious to know what tools you use and why?How do you automate/schedule backups? Which files/folders you back up? What is your prefered hardware/cloud storage and how do you manage storage space?

Well I'd like to see distros doing things to improve UX (which they now seem to have completely left to DEs). For example I remember when Ubuntu released their Hardware Drivers tool. It was samall but a super useful addition that made life easier for millions of users. But nowadays I see less app/utility contributions by distros.
When I read through the release announcements of most Linux distributions, the updates seem repetitive and uninspired—typically featuring little more than a newer kernel, a desktop environment upgrade, and the latest versions of popular applications (which have nothing to do with the distro itself). It feels like there’s a shortage of meaningful innovation, to the point that they tout updates to Firefox or LibreOffice as if they were significant contributions from the distribution itself. It raises the question: are these distributions doing anything beyond repackaging the latest software? Are they adding any genuinely useful features or applications that differentiate them from one another? And more importantly, should they be?

You don't need to do any configuration.
Just connect to your vpn, start every proxy and confgure your clients.

There is an app called Every Proxy. It doesn't need root. You just need to adjust proxy settings on your client devices.

Thanks. I installed Cockpit and disabled a couple of unnecessary services.

Thanks. Yeah I'll do that. Is it also possible to enable auto power on after power outage and restore? My celeron mini pc has this feature.
I have an old ThinkPad 11e running Debian that I have repurposed into a home server. It's only supposed to run TVheadend. I don't need any other services for now, but later on i might add a few using docker. Is it enough to set multiuser.target as default to disable gui and keep the system always on? How can I disable all unnecessary services and minimize power usage?

Has anyone here had success with USB fingerprint scanners? I also found this [Microsoft keyboard](https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-EKZ-00001-Modern-Keyboard-Fingerprint/dp/B072QZ8B2P/) with fingerprint reader but I don't know if it works with linux.
I want to be able to access (watch and record) a couple of FTA tv channels on several devices on my LAN. I already have a couple of USB tuners so I don't want to spend money on HDHomerun. I did some research and most people recommended [TVheadend](https://tvheadend.org). I've also stumbled upon [minisatip](https://minisatip.org) but there is almost no documentation for it. Any recommendations?

Not entirely true. Fingerprint scanner doesn't work on my Lenovo thinkbook 14s yoga, for example. And lenovos are known for their Linux friendliness.

I'm looking for a portable, very compact linux laptop. Screen size: 12 inch or smaller Weight: less than 1 kg (2.2 pounds) Full hd screen I did some googling and i only found a CHUWI laptop that suffers from an overheating issue.

Yeah it's definitely not the best machine to get by any means. I'm waiting to see how it affects my next electricity bill :)
I have an old Mac Pro that has been collecting dust for years. Today I bought an SSD and install Debian on the machine. It works flawlessly. Further reading revealed that there is an active community around the classic mac pros and thanks to their modular nature they can be fully upgraded. People even upgrade the CPUs in this thing. So if you like playing around with a PC like the old days, that is also Linux compatible, a Mac Pro 5,1 seems a good choice. AFAIK you can get it for cheap and a decent upgrade won't break the bank.

I'm booting openwrt off a usb c thumb drive connected to a fanless Celeron mini pc. The pc is cool but the thumb drive is so hot i can't touch it. Any ideas?
Ever since upgrading to Plasma 6 (fedora 40) my chrome web apps have been misbehaving when I try pinning them to the icon-only task manager (is that still what it's called?) 1.They randomly disappear from taskbar although i have pinned them 2.Sometimes they are there but wont work (i get a weird "chdir: not found" error) 3.Pinned chrome apps work but wont survive reboots. Have you experienced a similar problem? I've tried both stable and beta versions of Google Chrome.
Is there a self-hosted downloader that would automatically download liked videos or the ones added to a specific playlist?
(I know wireguard, tailscale and so on are the preferred options. But for some reaon I can't use any vpn atm) I'm looking for some tunneling solution which: -is NOT Cloudflare Tunnels -doesn't need a VPN (so wireguard or openvpn are ruled out) -is not SSH tunnel I need something like [FRP](https://github.com/fatedier/frp) preferably with a luci app and automatic ssl certificate for my subdomain. Any recommendations?
I used to hate android emulators, since the ones I'd tested on Windows were ad-ridden, slow bloatware. The other day I needed to run an android app on Fedora 40. I tried Waydroid and it worked very well. The app ran supersmooth as if it was running natively. Also the cli syntax was very sane an user friendly. waydroid app install|run|list ... So if you need an Android app on linux the experience might be better than what you think it would be.
Jellyfin is very unreliable with live tv in my experience. It takes ages to reload a playlist and sometimes the old channels still appear in library. Is there a better alternative?
I have an openwrt router at home which also acts as my home server. It's running a bunch of services using docker (Jellyfin, Nextcloud, etc.) I have set up an SSH tunnel between my openwrt router and VPS and can access jellyfin successfully. I understand that I need to set up a reverse proxy to access multiple services and have https. But I'm confused if I should set up this reverse proxy on the VPS or on the router itself. Is nginx the easiest option? Should i add subdomains in cloudflare for every service? Pease don't recommend vpns since they are all blocked where i live (wireguard, tailscale openVPN, etc.) I'm limited to using ssh tunneling only. Thanks
StartOS facilitates the entire process of discovering, installing, configuring, and using any variety of open-source software from anywhere in the world without trusting anyone.
I upgraded to Fedora 40 workstation a couple of days ago. I never turn off or suspend my laptop (a Thinkbook 14s Yoga) and it was guranteed to be dead if i left it unplugged for a couple of hours before the update. With Fedora 40 it's been unplugged for almost 5 hours and still has 52% battey left (down from 59% when i unplugged the charger). I noticed both TLP and auto-cpufreq have been disabled after the update so this looks like default power settings are being used. I'm not sure if it means I'll be getting consistently better battery life but i thought maybe it's a good idea to share this first impression anyway. Has anyone had a similar experience?
Where I live wireguard and openvpn are completely blocked and my isp doesn't provide a public ip. Tailsclale and cloudflare tunnels don't work either. Is there a last resort method for accessing my home server (a mini pc running openwrt and docker). Thanks!
There is a very annoying problem with archive extraction on Linux. I always sort my files by "last modified" and want my latest files and folders on top in any file manager. When I download and extract an archive, the extracted folder is placed toward the middle or bottom of the list apparently because the original timestamps of files are retained. If I'm not mistaken I didn't have this issue on my MacBook and the extracted archives would appear on the top of the list. Workaround: In Ark if I choose extract to subfolder and type a name for the new folder, it is treated as recently modified and is placed at the top. But I don't want to enter a name every time. Shouldn't an extracted folder be treated as recently modified?? Any ideas?
The only game I have ever played is FIFA on a PS4. Now I have a gaming laptop but have no idea how I should go about playing games on Linux. Appreciate your help in advance!
I have been thinking about self-hosting my personal photos on my linux server. After the recent backdoor was detected I'm more hesitant to do so especially because i'm no security expert and don't have the time and knowledge to audit my server. All I've done so far is disabling password logins and changing the ssh port. I'm wondering if there are more backdoors and if new ones are made I can't respond in time. Appreciate your thoughts on this for an ordinary user.
I watched a [video](https://youtu.be/B1iRxoyT4EA) by Chris Titus in which he encouraged everyone to install [auto-cpufreq](https://github.com/AdnanHodzic/auto-cpufreq) immediately since it does wonders for battery life on laptops. He said it was superior to TLP and powertop auto-optimizations. Has anyone actually used this for an extended period of time? Does it really work as advertised?
I've installed TLP on my Lenovo ThinkBook laptop and was wondering if there are additional steps I can take to extend the battery life when using the laptop unplugged. Could you please share more tips and tricks for maximizing battery life on Linux laptops?
I have many nerdy friends who have been Linux users for ages. But most of them don't know such a thing as Openwrt exists or have never bothered to give it a try. It's a very fun piece of software to play with and can be extremely useful for routing traffic. Wondering why it isn't more popular/widely used.
I'm looking for an Apple MacBook Air M2 alternative that could run Linux. I need something fanless, super lightweight with very long battery life. The only apps I use are Shotcut video editor, Chrome and Firefox. Any advice? Is it a good idea to get a MacBook Air m2 and use something like Asahi Linux or should I wait for arm linux laptops to become available.
What are the most promising projects/services aiming at making self hosting easier for everyone?
I do a lot of text editing for work and there are some phrases that I have to type frequently. What's the best way to quickly paste those phrases into a document using a shortcut or keyword? I mainly use Kwrite and Kate as i prefer plain text editors and need no formatting.
I've converted my Asus PN40 mini pc into an openwrt router. Everything seems to be working fine. But since the pc has only one ethernet port I'm using a noname USB to ethernet converter as the second NIC for WAN. Is there a better solution? Are proper USB ethernet adapters a thing? Preferably with Intel chip? Also i can't get the PC's intel 9000 series wireless chip to work in AP mode. I have hooked an old edimax repeater to the lan port as wifi AP but it's a wireless N device. Should i invest on a better AP? My ISP connection is capped at 300mbs. Can you recommend a cheap wifi 6 AP? Also I have 2 internet connections. Is it a good idea use the wifi in client mode, connect to the first internet through wifi and bond its internet connection with the wired wan? Thanks for you help in advance.
I own a Motorola Edge 20 Pro. It came with a 30 Watt Turbopower charger. However when I test the charging speed with the app Ampere I'm getting around 3 amps (max) and four volts with the stock charger. Is this mormal?
I know Debian and others can breathe life into older machines. But i wonder if there are any distros with serious optimizations that I haven't heard of. I've already tried MX Linux on an old Thinkpad SL400, and didn't see any difference from plain Debian. Update: thanks for the great suggestions. Forgot to say many distros feel zippy and fast until you open a web browser. Appreciate your thoughts on which web browser to use too. So far I've had a positive experience with [Thorium](https://thorium.rocks/) and Chromium.
Is it possible? Can proxies somehow "advertise" themselves the way some media services or printers do?
