Really liking this update a lot, the community jump feature is great! Been using it so much I’ve noticed myself tapping the screen at the top now as a muscle memory haha! Two quick notes on it, it might make sense to have a small UI element (like a pulldown arrow) to show future users that it’s there and would it be possible to enable it when reading posts as well as browsing communities?

Also, I think it’s awesome that you’re trying to avoid subscriptions. Might be worth a small blurb about that along with a “donate if you can but don’t worry if you can’t” type of thing somewhere in the app and we’ll help you keep the server going :) Even just on the “About” page in the settings, it was the first place I looked for it.

One more idea I had, maybe an icon for when the post title and article title don’t match could be displayed next to the title? Like how the baby emoji is displayed next to new users. This could be a feature everyone, even non-mods, would find useful as they’d be able to see who’s messing around with the headlines.

No, it won’t work if it’s deployed wrong. Is this a shared host or a VPS service? If it’s a shared host and you’re just clicking a button to deploy a software package, it that host’s job to make that button work right.

That sounds like it’s a commercial service. They should have a support option you can ask. It sounds like their deployment scripts are broken. Ansible and Docker are the easiest ways to run Lemmy, I’m guessing these guy’s scripts are just grabbing the docker images and launching them for you.

I seriously wouldn't buy a car at this point if it didn't have CarPlay or Android Auto in it. Navigation with Google Maps or Waze is vastly superior to anything a car company is ever going to come up with (props to Apple Maps too for making big improvements in the last several years). Integrated music experiences where I can directly see my Spotify playlists or favorite tracks without touching my phone is just something I'm used to and couldn't go back. Having a voice assistant that works from Google / Apple (I know Siri is rough sometimes lol) will always be better than any voice controls a car company comes up with. Oh, and huuuge points to Overcast for just reliably being the best podcast app for many years and having a super easy to navigate CarPlay app. I'd lose all of that and more if there was no integration with my phone and we went back to the awful bluetooth pairing that we had before with terrible UI design and no support for third party apps.

At this point, that's more important to me than whatever engine they've stuck in it. Just give me good mileage, pass inspection and last at least 150k miles and we're good. I'm not drag racing so I don't need a rocket ship lol

That's awesome! I think there's a newer generation of CarPlay from Apple that lets the auto-makers use the Apple UI for everything, including the spedometers, climate and other gauges. If that data can be integrated into third party apps, I think developers would come up with some really cool things.

I really wish my Hyundai would let me do that, maybe I should look into Nissan for my next car haha. How have you been finding the Leaf? I've only heard good things about it from others.

Two small other things also came to mind. I mentioned above that the "open in browser" button opened the federated link instead of the local instance link. I also noticed the same is true for the "share" button on the posts. It might make sense to have this be something that the users can set in settings: "Use federated links for sharing and opening posts in Safari" or something.

Also, I found a bug in the "top" view for comments. For some reason looking at this post makes only 18 of the 22 comments on it visible when sorting by "top". But both "new" and "hot" will show all 22 comments. I couldn't find any others where this happened, so this must be hitting some weird edge case. Here's the federated link and here's the link on my instance, I tied both and saw the same result both with a local account and my LW account. I don't think anything around the API changed for 0.18.5, so I doubt the recent update is what's causing an issue.

Oh nice, that interface looks really slick! Definitely really like seeing the extra information in there. The undo option will definitely be useful for accidental taps and save a trip to the web interface.

No worries, the pace you’re turning out new features is awesome and I’m sure the admins of various instances would love some admin tools on their phones. There’s not a ton of admin settings, at least in the web-UI. I’d imagine the option to defederate from an instance by showing an item in the dropdown list from a post/comment/report might be something they’d use that isn’t in a web UI. They don’t do it often, but I could see the need for a quick action needing to be taken: EG defederating from an instance with CSAM. Also, they should be shown the option to make new admins when tapping a user as well as a site-wide user ban option. Mods see ban from community, but admins can see a ban from site option. Also purging content is another admin option. It’s a step above a mod removal and totally deletes the data from the database as well as images. Should be shown as a context option for comments, posts and communities.

I’m not super up to speed on how transferring mods works. Is that just changing the order they’re in on the mod list? Sweet, looking forward to seeing the peek option in the update!

It also has fully working mod tools now, which almost none of the others have.

Yup, that will definitely work and sounds much more intuitive than having it as a separate item in the menu.

Yea, the webUI leaves a bit to be desired. I’m definitely up for cramming as much info into the modlog as you can. It’s not something people are browsing just to flick through and usually only being looked at for more details on some mod action taken. Showing the name of the person taking the action and an icon for if they’re a mod or an admin would be awesome! Also worth noting, the ability to see mod names is a server setting. Many servers might have it enabled so that all users can see mod names.

Ah, that’s a great one I had totally forgotten about! I don’t know if it’s possible in Lemmy, but if you can add a mod from their user profile and not have to make them make a post or a comment that I have to hunt down then that would be awesome! Right now Lemmy doesn’t support relative links (at least I don’t believe it does) so if I post something on LW or my own instance and I give that link to someone who’s a mod on lemm.ee and ask them to make me a mod… they actually need to either use the search or manually find the post / comment (either in the community or from my profile) in order to mod or unmod me since the LW or personal instance link I give them will take them to that instance… where they’re not a mod and potentially don’t even have an account.

Yup, exactly. If you long pressed on a comment it would open the context menu and perk the parent or the text of the post itself if it was a top comment (not 100% sure on the top comment one, but that would be useful regardless). I used it more than I realized and really missed it when I got to Lemmy lol

No problem, feel free hit me up with any questions or clarifications :)

No problem, Lemmy is all about working together so I’m happy to offer up any suggestions or feedback to help you out :)

For the thread nuke option, it wouldn’t need to be for a post. When we delete a post, nobody can see the comments anymore on it. It would be a context menu on a comment that has children comments (replies to it). Any comment I “nuke” that has replies would have itself and all replies to it removed (it’s fine if they all get the same removal reason or something generic like “thread nuked” or just blank reason). An example would be someone makes a really bad and rule breaking comment and others start to reply and quote parts of that comment, engage the troll or just derail into a totally inappropriate topic. In that case, that first comment and all replies to it need to go, but deleting them one by one isn’t very fast. The “top comment” isn’t always a top level reply, sometimes that top level comment is a few replies down.

The nuking isn’t a thing we need to do a lot, but there are occasional cases where it needs to be done, unfortunately.

Ah yes, you’re right, I totally missed it haha! Yup, the modlog is awesome for each community. I guess only feedback I’d have there would be to have the mod name that took an action visible in it. I don’t think it was, but I don’t want to close the reply while I’m writing it to double check :P

One other feature I remember from using Apollo on Reddit was when I opened the context menu on a comment by long pressing on it… it would show the comment it was a reply to. It was nice when reading a long list of comments, you could get a little more context if the comment someone was replying to was immediately above it (IE the reply isn’t the top reply to a comment so there’s others in between). It’s hard to describe, so I can give some more info if you want.

Will keep daily driving the app and let you know what I come up with! Keep up the awesome work!

Loving the new mod tools, excellent update! Really loving the app so far and eager to see where it goes.

A few more "really nice to have" options for mods if you are looking for more:

    • Nuke thread (recursive delete), this feature is missing from the web UI so it would be super awesome if the app had it (you'd just have to recurse through the posts under the "nuked post" and delete them since the Lemmy backend doesn't have a "nuke" option I'm aware of
    • Modlog for each community rather than just server-wide (server-wide one is nice too), would also be awesome if the modlog had the ability for me to undo the mod actions in it if needed. Lastly, the filter in the server modlog is missing a "show all" option.

Also, the "Open in browser" button opens the federated link and not the local one from the instance the user is on (ends up bringing you to a lot of random instances)

I had thought you’d installed Norton 360. I just realized 360 Total Security is a different company altogether. I’d instantly remove that from your PC, that’s a Chinese security software that looks like it’s named itself to be similar in name to Norton 360 (US developed but still not great). Any software that’s trying to draw people in by looking like something else is a big red flag.

Security software runs at a very low level and generally has full control over your PC if it wants. It needs to be something reputable. For me that means a few things: how good is it at defending against threats (both known and zero day), how many resources does it use on the PC (I still want to be able to game), how much do I trust the country where it was developed. The last one isn’t a one size fits all and really needs to be person to person. In terms of raw performance and security the two best are likely Bitdefender (Romania) and Kaspersky (Russia). AVG (Czech Republic), ESET (Slovakia), Webroot (USA) and Sophos (UK) are all decent options with good security and performance. All of them cost less than a single game for multiple years of protection so I’d pick one, pay for it and keep it running always.

That's good to hear, I'm not a huge fan of the drawer style either haha! It would probably make it easier to implement having more the two options per direction than swiping... though an app with a short medium and long swipe option would certainly be a good idea. I guess you could always have a toggle switch that would enable different modes: drawer style, 3 option swiping and then config options for each to assign actions.

I think the only thing the web UI differentiates if if something was deleted by a mod/admin and if it was removed by the content creator. It'd probably be tough to find out if it were a mod vs an admin removal as the only place I'm aware of that information is in the modlog.

Europe's Sweeping Rules for Tech Giants Are About to Kick In www.voanews.com

    ## What's changing? Platforms have started rolling out new ways for European users to flag illegal online content and dodgy products, which companies will be obligated to take down quickly and objectively. Amazon opened a new channel for reporting suspected illegal products and is providing more information about third-party merchants. TikTok gave users an "additional reporting option" for content, including advertising, that they believe is illegal. Categories such as hate speech and harassment, suicide and self-harm, misinformation or frauds and scams, will help them pinpoint the problem. Then, a "new dedicated team of moderators and legal specialists" will determine whether flagged content either violates its policies or is unlawful and should be taken down, according to the app from Chinese parent company ByteDance. TikTok says the reason for a takedown will be explained to the person who posted the material and the one who flagged it, and decisions can be appealed. TikTok users can turn off systems that recommend videos based on what a user has previously viewed. Such systems have been blamed for leading social media users to increasingly extreme posts. If personalized recommendations are turned off, TikTok's feeds will instead suggest videos to European users based on what's popular in their area and around the world. The DSA prohibits targeting vulnerable categories of people, including children, with ads. Snapchat said advertisers won't be able to use personalization and optimization tools for teens in the EU and U.K. Snapchat users who are 18 and older also would get more transparency and control over ads they see, including "details and insight" on why they're shown specific ads. TikTok made similar changes, stopping users 13 to 17 from getting personalized ads "based on their activities on or off TikTok."
