@keenworld I agree. They started with email a decade ago and even though it was unfinished they tacked on calendar, storage, vpn and so on. I would have wished that they finish one thing before starting another.

My biggest gripe is that they are incredibly distracting to use while driving. The safety implications are huge. I hate on-screen buttons. On top of that most are poorly coded and run slowly.
Extra oversight for powers to scan encrypted messages for child abuse images passed by peers.

Personally, I created two communities here that I frequented on /r, /m/Amex and /m/Signal because I wanted to help build kbin up overall, and give a home to those that migrated. Full disclosure, I will eventually step back from moderating once those communities grow and become self-sufficient with additional moderators joining in.

I am aware that upvoted posts make it to [https://kbin.social/fav](https://kbin.social/fav) however that just doesn't work well as I already have 1,000+ pages in there. Moreover, that only registers upvoted posts and not comments. A workaround would be to just use boost, and only upvote when you want to "save" but that is just not conventional imho. The ability on /r to simply save a comment or a post is truly basic but effective. [@Ernest](https://kbin.social/u/Ernest) EDIT: Relevant [Codeberg issue](https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/551)
I was airdropping some recent vacation pictures to my MBP from my wife's iPhone 13 Pro and noticed that most files ended up being around 2MB in size which I thought was very small. Started doing some experimenting and discovered the following: When selecting a set of pictures in Photos on Mac or an iPhone and selecting Share - Airdrop to another Mac or iPhone, the pictures are compressed 5-fold. (they go from 10MB to 2MB). When selecting the same set of pictures in Photos on Mac or an iPhone, exporting them to a folder, and then selecting that folder and using Share - Airdrop to another Mac or iPhone, the pictures are not compressed. (file size unchanged). After doing some research, I found out that two settings need to be adjusted on your iPhone. One, you need to go to Settings \> Photos, and under Transfer to Mac and PC, select Keep Originals (that's a permanent setting). Two, and that is not a permanent setting, you have to do it every single time (totally stupid imo), when you are tapping the Share icon, before you tap AirDrop, look for the Options button at the top of the Share sheet, select that, and toggle on All Photos Data (that option does not exist in Photos on a Mac or at least I can't find it). Doing the two will result in full-sized pictures via AirDrop. Pretty annoying that this is so convoluted and now I finally know why we sent low-quality photos to friends in the past.
Meredith Whittaker, president of secure messaging service Signal, said a provision in the Bill focused on encryption had “significant issues” around the mass surveillance of private information.
Ernest just posted some comments clarifying recent changes to Votes, Boosts, Favorites, and Reputation Points: * Upvotes & Downvotes function akin to Reddit * Boosts count as two Upvotes ([link](https://kbin.social/m/AskKbin/t/125739/Are-upvotes-counting-towards-your-reputation-now#entry-comment-492422)) * Favorites are added to [https://kbin.social/fav](https://kbin.social/fav) if you Upvote ([link](https://kbin.social/m/AskKbin/t/125739/Are-upvotes-counting-towards-your-reputation-now#entry-comment-493275)) * Reputation Points have been updated In addition to that, Ernest stated that "*there is no connection between reputation points and sorting algorithms. It's just info in the profile*" ([link](https://kbin.social/m/AskKbin/t/125739/Are-upvotes-counting-towards-your-reputation-now#entry-comment-493207))

I was just saying to my spouse this morning how it seems that the smart people have left reddit as there is a discernible drop in the comment quality in some of the communities I frequent. Unfortunately they haven’t even been registered here just yet. I am quitting reddit in a week anyway hopefully by then more of those communities will migrate here. I created two (Signal, Amex), hope others will follow suit.

The amount of apps being developed for iOS / Android is getting really crazy now and new apps keep popping up every day. Updated list below: * Artemis (iOS, Android, kbin, lemmy): [link](https://kbin.social/m/ArtemisApp) * Memmy (iOS, lemmy): [link](https://kbin.social/m/memmy@lemmy.ml) * Mlem (iOS, lemmy): [link](https://kbin.social/m/mlemapp@lemmy.ml) * Morpha (iOS, lemmy): [link](https://kbin.social/m/morpha@vlemmy.net) * Thunder (iOS, Android, lemmy): [link](https://kbin.social/m/thunder_app@lemmy.world) * Beyond (iOS, Android, kbin, lemmy): [link](https://kbin.social/m/programming@beehaw.org/t/58630/I-am-working-on-a-new-lemmy-app-for-iOS) * Jerboa (Android, lemmy): [link](https://github.com/dessalines/jerboa) * Slide (Android, lemmy): [link](https://kbin.social/m/android@lemmy.world/t/68111/To-anyone-that-misses-Reddit-Slide-I-may-have-a) * Sync (Android, lemmy): [link](https://kbin.social/m/syncforlemmy@lemmy.world) * *Unnamed* (kbin): [link](https://kbin.social/m/kbin/p/512296/Decided-I-m-going-to-go-ahead-with-my-Kbin-mobile) * Connect (Android, lemmy): [link](https://kbin.social/m/technology@beehaw.org/t/76303/Introducing-Connect-for-Lemmy) * Summit (Android, lemmy): [link](https://lemmy.world/c/summit) * Lemon (iOS, lemmy): [link](https://lemm.ee/c/lemon) * Liftoff (iOS, Android, lemmy): [link](https://kbin.social/m/liftoff@lemmy.world) * WefWef (Web App, lemmy): [link](https://lemmy.world/c/wefwef) Most apps on the list are lemmy apps, meaning they don't work with kbin. Artemis is specifically designed to work with kbin, not sure if or when any of the other ones will go in that direction or become interoperable as there are some challenges with the kbin API at the moment. Having said that, a new API is in the works ([https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/pulls/357](https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/pulls/357)) so things should get better with time. Some of the apps are in a very early stage of development so it may happen that they adjust OS availability and platform support. 🚀 Donate to kbin here: [https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin](https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin)

@ernest Fantastic news and big thanks to all that are helping! @ernest I feel you will keep seeing several thousand users join in daily as the reddit shitshow continues to play out. There are now 10 apps being developed that will further support the transition especially as the July 1st shutdown takes place. That’s probably when a much bigger wave of new users will come in. Is your infrastructure scalable to allow for this onslaught? Thank you and everyone else again for your hard work!

I'm pondering whether to embark on that journey myself, as I have a topic that I feel deserves it's own instance. I have some experience in setting up websites (going back to forums days with phpBB, vBulletin, and Invision going through WordPress and Pligg) but those were relatively easy as there were installers and plenty of info online. kbin will be a challenge for sure but also an exciting project I feel.

Recently I got a new Macbook and was able to transfer all of my Signal messages from the old one to the new one by copying over the Signal Desktop folder. You can find the Signal Desktop folder at "/Users/\<username\>/Library/Application Support/Signal". Steps are as follows: 1. Important: Do not unlink Signal on your old device! 2. Setup Signal on the new device and link it with your account 3. Quit new and old instances on both devices 4. Copy over the folder above from old to new (overwrite) 5. Start new instance and ensure it loads properly 6. Important: Do not start old instance again, delete it
In this step-by-step tutorial, learn how to use Signal, learn how to use the Signal messaging app to send secure and private messages to your friends and family.
There are at least five apps that I know of currently in development for iOS. Unfortunately neither Memmy nor Mlem able to connect to kbin at the moment, something to do with the kbin-specific API from what [@ernest](https://kbin.social/u/@ernest), [@BrooklynMan](https://lemmy.ml/u/BrooklynMan), and [@gkd](https://lemmy.ml/u/gkd) have said. Kmoon is specifically being developed for kbin and is multi-platform for iOS and Android (no TestFlight betas on that just yet): Artemis (Kmoon): [https://kbin.social/m/ArtemisApp](https://kbin.social/m/ArtemisApp) Memmy: [https://kbin.social/m/memmy@lemmy.ml](https://kbin.social/m/memmy@lemmy.ml) Mlem: [https://kbin.social/m/mlemapp@lemmy.ml](https://kbin.social/m/mlemapp@lemmy.ml) Morpha: [https://kbin.social/m/morpha@vlemmy.net](https://kbin.social/m/morpha@vlemmy.net) Thunder: [https://kbin.social/m/thunder\_app@lemmy.world](https://kbin.social/m/thunder_app@lemmy.world) Lemur: [https://kbin.social/m/programming@beehaw.org/t/58630/I-am-working-on-a-new-lemmy-app-for-iOS](https://kbin.social/m/programming@beehaw.org/t/58630/I-am-working-on-a-new-lemmy-app-for-iOS) P.S. There is a substantial amount of spam and NSFW posts on the All page coming through already. Most NSFW posts aren't being tagged as such and are coming right through. I am not sure how this can be weathered but we need something in place fairly soon, I feel like we are days away from rivers of bad stuff, especially via some of the federated instances. EDIT: I personally don't care much about the NSFW aspect, more in the lines of what a newcomer will be seeing when they get to the main page. 99% of the newcomers don't know / care about federation and have no idea how to turn that off. Liability for the server owner is also an element of consideration.
