This one's a bit heavier and more aggressive, but also still kind of fun. Really a band to keep an eye on!

    BAND-MAID - secret My lips [Rock] [2017] www.youtube.com

The great thing about productive bands with a long and varied discography like BAND-MAID is that you can continuously discover new "favourite" songs. And recently for me it's "secret My lips" from their 2017 album "Just Bring It". (The first one where the band members themselves wrote almost all songs.) It's sometimes said that in BAND-MAID songs, the bass and even the drums have their own melody lines, unlike most other bands where they're mostly just "there" as support for the main melody. In this song, I think it's especially pronounced with the drum part from the 2:00 minute mark - I just love it. The awesomeness continues into final stretch of the song, which also features great twin vocals of Miku and Saiki.

Chakura - A basic Jane band journey!! [Rock] [2024] www.youtube.com

The English post title is the apparently band's own (quite liberal) translation, the original would be "Maru de dame na joshikousei wa BANDOMAN ni natta", so something along the lines of "A totally useless high school girl became a band member". Kind of autobiographic maybe? lol Anyway it's a fun song and they rock out.

Yes, I watched it (the first season at least) and quite liked it. It's what brought on this post basically. I had decided to watch it when I was looking for my next idol anime after my "gateway drug" Zombieland Saga, and the connection to that via Minami Tanaka, and also that I vaguely remembered Yoshino Aoyama was part of it, were what gave the impulse.

There are also a few Wake Up, Girls! anime movies that I couldn't watch yet, and a continuation series "Shin Sou". The drastically altered character designs in the latter unfortunately felt off-putting to me, after the more realistic style of the first season.

Wake Up, Girls! - ONE IN A BILLION (Restaurant to Another World OP) [Live] youtube.com

*Wake Up, Girls!* was an idol unit active from 2014 to 2019 whose leader was none other than Yoshino Aoyama, voice of Hitori "Bocchi" Gotou in *Bocchi the Rock*. In this performance of the opening theme from [*Restaurant to Another World*](https://youtube.com/watch?v=h-7JarkA_3o), originally a collaboration with Mayn, she's the one singing the very first line, with the light blue ribbon. Far from the absolute nobody before *Bocchi the Rock* she's sometimes painted as (also by her own presentation), she had before already led this unit throughout the years, culminating in this final concert in a brimful Saitama Super Arena in front of about 35,000 people ([full concert playlist](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVVOb0eFUAAf110Wqx6gnzR6eWJJiTrbZ)) that [wowed her senpais Rie Takahashi and Reina Ueda.](https://youtube.com/watch?v=jWu8ooPplRo) During the unit's active years, she also voiced the character based on herself in various accompanying [anime productions.](https://youtube.com/watch?v=5DPnoCQikSo) After the unit disbanded after this concert, the only other member that continued to be significantly active in the idol and/or anime space AFAIK is [Minami Tanaka, who e.g. went on to become part of Franchouchou in Zombieland Saga.](https://feddit.de/post/4739515)

Sorry for replying so late, I first wanted to get a better impression of their evolution for myself. I think as a general rule, I like their more recent stuff more? Image, Take Me Out, A.M.D.K.J. - the more rock styled songs. I also really like Mirror, as a recent slower song. But among their earlier stuff, Shunkan Sentimental is also great. I also kind of like Scandal Baby, while Shoujo S does nothing for me... it's pretty random. Though I have to say that the blatant pushing of their schoolgirl image in their earlier videos and concerts is a bit off-putting to me. I mean they were basically schoolgirls back then, but still... I prefer the later stuff where they show their individuality.

Franchouchou - Gekkou Survive (from Zombieland Saga Revenge) [Live] www.youtube.com

Recently I commented here that I might finally be getting into idol stuff in my old years, and it seems to be really happening via the gateway of idol anime... This song is from [the second season of Zombieland Saga](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgqOeVQrJ4M) and I chose it because it's actually pretty great as a rock song (though not "death metal" as billed in that video). [The anime seiyuu actually formed an idol unit and did several big concerts with all the songs from the show.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N6l8YXDl2s) And most of the songs are really pretty great.

I'm still slowly catching up with Scandal so to speak, though to be honest mostly their "greatest hits". It's crazy how productive they've been through all those years. And although not all songs are really my thing, they are definitely insanely versatile. And most importantly, they still seem to enjoy very much what they're doing!
And that is actually one of the greatest appeals a band can have to me. Nothing worse than a veteran band where the members seem to be only in it out of habit or for the money but can't seem to stand each other anymore.

But yeah, typically great song by Kaneyorimasaru I say! That's really an impressive song born from this collaboration! You're right, it does feel like from a musical, especially with the dialogue between the two parts. Also an great variety of musical styles incorporated there... At times it kind of seemed reminiscent of The Smashing Pumpkins, other sections were kind of 80s synth-pop, Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody?) or David Bowie... Pretty wild!

Man, you might just get me into idol stuff in my old days... Until recently, "idol" was basically synonymous with highly polished, overproduced and a squeaky clean image in my mind. So "underground idol" was basically an oxymoron to me. But this performance is really raw, in the good sense, i.e. gives an authentic impression. I really liked it!

Oh yeah, the whole idol business is pretty weird, and we won't speak of K-pop here. 😆

But Babymetal is not typical of the idol industry, so that's not my issue with them. It's just that I somehow can't really "connect" to music if its faces, the people on stage, are not the ones who actually play (and ideally also wrote) it. And idk, the dancing is just weird to me.

I think this is a pretty nice article going a bit into the background of YOASOBI and their recently exploded international popularity, mostly due to "Idol".

Beautiful! I actually didn't know the peggies also had these kind of slow, melancholic songs. That's on me never venturing farther into their music than "Kiminosei" and "Centimeter" though... I missed out!

Maaya Sakamoto - Kiseki no umi [1998] www.youtube.com

I rediscovered this song not that long ago, and an immense wave of nostalgia hit me when I listened to it. I distinctly remember sitting in my room in the late 1990s, having downloaded a compressed-to-hell clip of the [Record of Lodoss War TV opening](https://youtu.be/j8Af-52P4_k?t=53s) via my parents' dial-up line, watching it again and again, enchanted by this music and feeling sad that there's all this great anime that would be forever unattainable for me. 25 years later, there's more anime at my fingertips than I could ever watch, and I still haven't watched this series. I heard it's not that good really. 😂 But the song is still as enchanting as back then.

A true classic! Still a banger!

I've read that Linkin Park were a main inspiration for them, and in this song I can definitely hear it, but it still manages to be its own thing.

Glad you like it! Same here tbh, this song has been on heavy rotation during the last week. This band just hits just the sweet spot between cheerful singing, but not too poppy, rather garage/grungy sound for me.

Browsing around on YouTube, I got recommended this other song "Hazukashii" with similar vibes. For some reason it's on another channel, which only has this video. Still seems official though?

Yes, when you open the homepage of your instance in a browser and scroll to the bottom, it should say something like "BE: 0.18.4".

If it says that and you still get this bug, it's a new one.

Which Jerboa and Instance backend versions are you seeing this with? There was an issue in the backend that could produce this behavior but should be fixed in 0.18.4: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3823

Which front end would show both names? On (mobile and desktop) web and in Jerboa I only see the display name if it's set. And the only limitation seems to be that a leading @ is not allowed.

Tbh I think the display names as they currently work are dangerous. What would prevent me from setting my display name to nutomic@lemmy.ml? Most front-ends would not show that I'm actually not you at first glance.

Edit: Misread the question as being about display names. Full unicode support for usernames would be even more dangerous, basically opening the door to unicode homograph spoofing on that level too.

ClariS - ALIVE (The First Take) www.youtube.com

The other ClariS post reminded me of this version of the Lycoris Recoil opening theme "ALIVE" from The First Take. This beautiful piano and strings arrangement really allows the two to shine. And how they shine! There should be no doubt after listening to this that they are excellent singers. I'm sure the recordings for The First Take are rehearsed beforehand, but the actual perfomances are absolutely the real thing. I find it remarkable how perfectly the two harmonize, while the performance still retains its individuality distinguishing it from the original studio recording. [ClariS also did another great performance of their Madoka Magica OP "Connect" for The First Take.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCGk9nWx6DE)

I have to admit I basically only know ClariS through their anime-related songs. 80s synth-pop was also pretty formative for me I guess, so this was very interesting to me, thanks!

This song must have been really big when it came out, it even has its own Wikipedia page in English.

    BAND-MAID - Puzzle (Official Live Video) www.youtube.com

I wouldn't normally categorize Band-Maid as metal, but since they were mentioned specifically in the welcome post... 😄 I just can’t get enough of this song recently. It has the perfect synthesis of everything that makes Band-Maid great: heavy but precise drums and bass lines by Akane and Misa driving the rhythm, Kanami’s melodic guitar riffs, Saiki’s enchanting singing augmented by Miku’s harmonizing… And I didn’t even realize until I saw the subtitles on this live video that it’s actually a very romantic song about unrequited love. That even adds to its appeal to me.

    Creepy Nuts - Yofukashi no uta [Hip-Hop] [2019] www.youtube.com

It's Friday, so a song about staying up late is fitting I suppose! Although admittedly my plans for tonight mainly involve continuing to watch the anime named after this song, which also used it as its ending. The opening song [Daten, also by Creepy Nuts](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRL5Cp_mPeo), is also pretty well-known I guess, but more of a hidden gem IMO is their insert song [Losstime](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=O6WjVGEVbNc) with its very chill vibes.

    Majiko - Irony [2015, original vocaloid: 2012] www.youtube.com

Majiko, like quite a few Japanese singers I guess, started out singing covers of vocaloid songs. And it's these songs interpreted by her that I love the most. I've already posted her [heartbreaking live performance of Kokoronashi here](https://feddit.de/post/760749), but this is the song through which I discovered her. It was actually [this fan-made video which also has English subtitles](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHENIg8Se7M) if you want to read along. This song also features Majiko's signature killer move, where she starts out with a relatively subdued performance, but gradually increases the emotional intensity, until by the end you think you can hear her literally cry her heart out.

Bilibili is I think the major video streaming site in China and a number of other east asian countries, basically their Youtube. It is "legit" in the sense that it's a major company and they also have official paid offerings e.g. for anime streaming. What it probably doesn't have compared to Youtube is an effective copyright strike system. Whether you think that's good or bad is up to you, but it's probably why the song is still available there and not on Youtube. :)

That song is also nice. But the singer doing it in the same high-pitched cheery voice was a bit incongruous for me. I was kind of hoping she could also pull off a deeper voice.

Leo Ieri - Kono sekai de (2019) www.youtube.com

One of those tracks that randomly played in some mix and instantly captivated me. I think it's the combination of those hymnic chords and Leo's intense, almost plaintive singing. The song was also the opening theme of the movie [Code Geass Lelouch of the Re;surrection](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_Geass_Lelouch_of_the_Re;surrection). Leo Ieri has a great voice, but her other songs are a bit hit or miss for me. Another song of hers that I really like is [Pain](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SvM_9W3Yjc) where she shows that she can also really rock out!

Reminder: Please write a few words about the music you're posting

It's mentioned in the sidebar, and although I don't want to make it a hard rule (yet?), I really want to encourage you to provide some context on the music that you post here. Use the text field in your post for this. What you like about a track, some background about it or the artist, or whatever made you decide to post it here. I think it helps others immensely to appreciate a track and increases the motivation to actually give it a listen. At least that's the case for me. Just a sentence can be enough. Ideally, you will even spark some discussion. Otherwise this community is at risk of being just a link dump.
