Partially. For the Monero blockchain itself this is basically it but the spam also enabled them to withdraw funds ($300k) from darknet markets multiple times in a row, since their withdrawal systems didn't account for transactions being this delayed.

They made money through extortion, not by draining any wallets due to spam. There was spam and it did delay transactions for regular users due to existing wallet bugs that are now fixed. I can't really comment on badly coded markets, I assume they somehow broke their payment systems because they didn't account for long delays when receiving coins or also had the fee selection bug.

This attack highlighted several issues that have been addressed. The biggest issue was wallets not automatically raising the default fee which led to transactions getting stuck for hours. Without the bug, you would have paid 2 cents instead of 0.5 for a transaction and it would have been confirmed at regular speed.

If you receive a donation through the Ethereum anonymization contract Tornado Cash, everyone can see that and since the contract is also used by sanctioned states like North Korea, all funds going through Tornado Cash were put on a sanctions list (pretty easy since they only needed to sanction the contract address). Monero is different in the sense that it has privacy by default and while you might be able to point out that some criminals use Monero, you can't really prove it directly with the blockchain like you can with Tornado Cash.
Imagine the government sees that a ton of people, including known terrorists were all sending credit card payments to the same guy, who mixes everyones money together to hide it's origin (now he is the origin though) and now money from that place of origin is used to fund attacks on the government but also to donate to kids with cancer. Of course the guy will have to be arrested and all the money that went through him marked as sanctioned.
Monero on the other hand works as an independent version of cash, not tied to any nation but instead governed by cryptography and code, which are protected by the First Amendment. If a government doesn't like Monero, they can still easily make access to Monero very complicated via laws that prevent centralized exchanges from listing it, and they do, but outright sanctioning the whole network could be very, very hard and might literally be impossible without trampling all over free speech laws.
Hello guys. In about 50 days the 1 year hosting runs out for the current server. Fitting, since it has only a 100 GB disk that can't easily be expanded and we currently take up about 40 GB of that. There will be an announcement post once everything has been prepared for the migration and I'll attempt to restore the entire instance on the new server. Since the old payment gateway kinda broke when we switched the hosting provider I’ve set up a new one :)
Please report if you encounter any issues. Since about a week ago, the monero payment gateway doesn't seem to work and while setting up and testing the site after the migration I've ran into the site not always loading but that could be related to DNS propagation and hopefully resolves itself in the next few hours.
To be honest, no idea what this entails. I was bullied into updating the instance and the official patchnotes are just all the github changes instead of a proper write-up 😂

Server showed as online on the hosting provider dashboard but it wasn't responding. After contacting support, this was fixed at some point. This led to a config file being reverted because of a setting I didn't change earlier which led to the page only showing "Server error." Everything should work again and in the future that config file shouldn't change by itself anymore. I still have no idea what the problem on the providers side was, let's hope it doesn't happen again :P
There is a lot we can do but it might become a bit spammy if we add too much. Some ideas would be: - Monero ecosystem releases (Monero, GUI, Haveno, Serai, etc) either in a special releases community or the regular Monero one - DarknetLive posts to the darknet community - Crypto news to the cryptocurrency community All of these feeds are of high quality and shouldn't completely spam us. #### What do you think? As some of you may have noticed, monero.town was only available for people signed into a Lemmy mobile app for the past few days. It looks like the Lemmy software had a bug that was exploited to DoS instances which of course happened on evening #1 of Monerokon. In an attempt to fix this DoS issue, I upgraded to Lemmy version 18 which required additional, badly documented changes to the config. Since I didn't have a laptop with me, there wasn't all that much I could do besides the initial analysis. That is why it took until today for me to fix the issue. I hope this wasn't too big of an inconvenience to anyone 😅 Lemmy is still very new software and these are some of the growing pains. Please be reassured that I won't randomly abandon monero.town and will do my very best to never have to do another migration like house->town again.
The default theme now fills more of the screen on desktop and makes it easier to follow comment chains. Storage is one of the biggest concerns in regards to instance resource usage, the new config should significantly improve storage efficiency via the following: - Uploads are now limited to a maximum of 1 MB - All uploads will now automatically be converted to the webp format and original file is discarded
