Yeah, if it's a link to a news story or website, I agree, it should just be a direct link. I'm mostly thinking about content created by Reddit users and posted up there themselves.

I think for TV, the broadcaster is responsible for setting the content rating. And they're answerable to the BSA if they get it wrong, which is what this is about. But don't quote me on that.

Personally, I think it's fine for people to cross-post stuff they think is relevant to the communities here. I'd prefer it over links to Reddit, because it lets people engage with the content here. I doubt posts in !newzealand@lemmit.online will get nearly as much attention as the ones on lemmy.nz. The Lemmit bot makes it pretty obvious that it's taken from Reddit. I think one guideline would be not to remove the bot's text from the post, nor the "cross-posted from" text that's generated when it's cross-posted here.

As for question posts, it would be a weird thing to cross-post. I guess if someone wanted to give credit to the OP on Reddit. I can't see that happening too often, unless it's a pretty broad question that generates discussion - in which case, it doesn't seem to matter to me if there's a separate discussion going on here.

Do we need guidelines about using it? Like sure you can subscribe, but what about cross posting to !newzealand?

Cross posts ok? Guidelines on not cross posting questions just links (articles etc) because the questions don’t come with the answers? Any thoughts?

For those struggling to wean yourselves off Reddit, someone has made a bot that copies posts from subreddits to Lemmy so you can follow the subreddits from here. [I made a post](https://lemmy.nz/post/78862) about doing something similar a couple of weeks ago. They have their own instance at [lemmit.online](https://lemmit.online/). The r/newzealand is clone is at [!newzealand@lemmit.online](https://lemmit.online/c/newzealand). Most of the communities there aren't showing up in the search here without the full link yet, so go to [their list of local communities](https://lemmit.online/communities/listing_type/Local/page/1), open a community you want to subscribe to, then copy the link that looks like `!newzealand@lemmit.online` from the sidebar into the search on Lemmy.nz (or your local instance). If the subreddit you want isn't listed on lemmy.online, you can post a request in [!requests@lemmit.online](https://lemmit.online/c/requests). It was pretty much instant for me.

We absolutely need to stop putting it into the air as soon as possible. If these kinds of technologies delay transitions then they're counterproductive. I'm inclined to think that reducing atmospheric CO₂ at every possible opportunity is important at the moment.

Even if the world becomes carbon neutral, we'll need to remove the excess CO₂ from the atmosphere if we want the heating to stop. This is one of the most practical systems for doing that that I've seen so far. We'll need it to happen on a much larger scale, but it's important to be researching it now.

The dissolved CO₂ reacts with reactive rocks, like basalt, forming solid, stable carbonate minerals. It's essentially permanent on a human timescale. But you're asking the right questions.

The scientists link to this page, which explains it in more detail.

NZ's geothermal wells offer a cheap way of storing carbon permanently — equivalent to taking 600,000 cars off the road theconversation.com

These researchers from Canterbury University have come up with an idea that they say can cheaply remove 3 million tonnes of CO₂ from the air each year. And it utilises existing infrastructure. The TLDR is that geothermal water contains CO₂, and the stations here have systems that capture and dissolve that CO₂ into the water before it's reinjected. This CO₂ rich water is heavier than the surrounding water, so it sinks to the bottom. The heat from geothermal wells is not replenished at the speed it's taken by the stations, so eventually the water coming out isn't hot enough and new wells need to be drilled. The scientists are suggesting that instead of simply drilling a new wells, we burn biomass from forestry to heat the warm water up the last bit. The carbon in this fuel has been gathered by the trees, and if it was released into the atmosphere it would be carbon neutral. But if you use the station's existing CO₂ capture and dissolve systems, the carbon goes underground permanently. The operation becomes a carbon sink that also enables the use of geothermal energy that would otherwise be unusable. They say, "in terms of buying ourselves out of an emissions liability, geothermal carbon removal is one of the cheapest options out there." They compare it with the cost of switching from a petrol to electric car - US$700 for each tonne of CO₂ saved. With the existing infrastructure, they say their plan would remove CO₂ at a cost of about US$55 a tonne. Their papers and a bunch more evidence and info is linked in the article.

I don't think it's bad karma. I've spent years on Reddit watching other people's TikToks, reading other people's tweets, watching a repost of a repost of a repost of a video ripped from someone's Facebook... If you give them credit, that's more than most people get in the world of social media.

Reddit has a way to embed posts and it would be cool if links to Reddit embedded the content here, but I don't think that's happened yet. If that happens, all you'd need to do is link to someone's post.

I was considering making a bot that automatically cross-posted stuff from Reddit, but it seemed pretty unpopular with the community. The more I think about it, they were right - a bot doing that was a bad idea for this community. I was thinking of setting up another instance with a bunch of communities that had the top posts from their respective subreddits, but I just haven't got the time to figure all that out at the moment.

But I'm going way off track. I think reposting stuff from Reddit is fine.

Edit: @luthis@lemmy.nz - I meant to reply to your comment

I'll admit I knew very little about Matariki before it was made a public holiday, but I've been reading about it recently and it's fascinating. I'm intending to put a few posts up about it as we get closer to the celebration period. I think one of them will be about the meaning of the individual stars. But I'll probably start off with a guide about how kiwis of all ethnicities can celebrate Matariki.

Back in the day I wrote hundreds thousands of Wikipedia articles and I kind of miss reading about something in depth, distilling the key info and then summarising it. No idea why I enjoy it, but I hope other people get something out of it.

Edit: Looking back on my edit history, there weren't actually thousands I wrote from scratch, more like a few hundred. I made tens of thousands of edits which is where I must be getting mixed up.

I don’t want to pretend to be an expert on te reo at all. “Mānawatia a Matariki” is a phrase developed by Professor Rangi Mātāmua and Hēmi Kelly:

“Matariki doesn’t come out of a western context, it’s Māori” Rangi says, ”so if you’re trying to apply a greeting to the Matariki celebration where you say hari (happy) Matariki or meri (merry) Matariki – it doesn’t make sense.”

So Rangi and Hēmi developed the phrase Mānawatia a Matariki – meaning to honour, acknowledge, and welcome in Matariki. “It’s important that if we’re going to celebrate something that comes out of a Māori context, we use the correct terms and the correct language around the celebration.”

Hēmi Kelly explains more of the origin and meaning of the phrase in a video on Facebook. Mānawatia a Matariki has been chosen by the government as the recommended phrase to wish each other a “happy” Matariki.

The other one, “Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori”, is how Massey University recommends you say “happy Matariki” in te reo. I ran that one through Google translate so if the translation is wrong, someone please let me know.

    Mānawatia a Matariki! Happy Matariki!

Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori! Greetings of Matariki, the Māori new year! This month, we've got a bit of a Matariki theme. Matariki festivals are already underway in many parts of the country, and events will continue until around the end of July. A bunch of them are listed on the [Matariki.com events page](https://www.matariki.com/events). The public holiday falls on the 14th this year, with a celebration period of 11-17 July. The 2023 Tangaroa lunar period, when the rising of Matariki is observed, is 10-13 July. I'm planning on posting up some more Matariki stuff later. Also, if you've got an idea for next month's banner, leave a comment below.

Academics investigate bias in our Chinese-language media www.newsroom.co.nz

In an analysis, academics recently found several cases of pro-CCP and pro-NZ-National-Party bias in NZ Chinese-language media. It’s long been known that China interferes in Chinese-language media here. Interestingly, it appears the CCP and NZ Chinese-language media are currently putting their weight behind National MP Nancy Lu. She was secretly “trained as a candidate” by former National MP Jian Yang, according to a statement made by Yang in 2020. Notably, Yang used to train spies for the People’s Liberation Army before he came to NZ, and left parliament after intelligence agencies flagged him over his relationship with the CCP.

This is stupid. They put 1000s of lives at risk, but Waka Kotahi claims it's not within their regulatory powers and the Police can be bothered to investigate. All that happened was they lost their authority to issue WoFs. That's barely a deterrent at all.

'They think you're committing fraud': Trans refugees in NZ need usable ID www.renews.co.nz

This is about [the new self-identification process](https://www.govt.nz/browse/passports-citizenship-and-identity/changing-your-gender/change-the-registered-sex-on-your-birth-certificate/) that the DIA launched ~~last week~~ on the 15th, which makes it easier for people born in New Zealand to amend their registered sex on their birth certificate. They have removed the previous requirements of a trip to the Family Court and proof of medical treatment. It also now allows applicants to amend their registered sex to non-binary. However, there's still not a solution for those born overseas. The DIA is working on something, but it will likely not apply to asylum seekers until they're accepted as refugees - which often takes many years. In the meantime, the mismatched name issue makes it very difficult for these people to get things like a bank account, an IRD number, a job, benefits, medication, etc. Which puts a lot of roadblocks in the way of these people becoming productive, happy, healthy members of our society.

'Bootleg' concert organisers blame Government for events deemed 'total scam' www.stuff.co.nz

These guys charged $150 for a Lord of the Rings & Hans Zimmer symphonic experience, but actually provided a shitty orchestra that played sound-a-like knock-offs. Then when people started wanting their money back they claim everybody loved it and that the NZ government is somehow crippling culture and arts. What a bunch of dicks.

Nah, I took it as a joke.

It's just that it hadn't occurred to me that there was no place for the spectators until then. Which seems stupidly obvious in hindsight. It would have been a fantastic location 3 years ago though.

I happened to open Lemmy for the first time this weekend while the server was down. I got a bit worried before I headed over to the chat and saw you were onto it.

It seems like keeping bots away is going to be one of the big struggles for Lemmy. At least for the time being. Though to be fair, it seems like a problem for all social media. At least Lemmy isn't profiting off the controversy stirred up by a lot of them.

Yeah, it depends on the relationship. Like, if you were friends mostly because you had something in common, and it's not relevant to one or both of you anymore, then it usually doesn't work. Or if you weren't that close.

But there are other friends that kind of transcend common interests or activities etc. Those are the ones you can just pick things up with after many years. That's my experience anyway.

I just reread the article and it's full of unusual wording that suggests it was only created for a demonstration. Basically a promo for NZ and the cup.

Just had a crazy weekend catching up with an old friend I haven't seen in years. It was awesome.

I love how when you see close friends for the first time in ages, it's like they never went away. You just pick up straight where you left off.

Welcome to today’s daily kōrero! Sorry it's so late. It doesn’t have to be the mods making the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it! Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, your weekend, what you have planned for the week, etc. So how’s it going?

Absolutely. My first thought was that it could screw up the land, but the Herald article says

The full-size pitch, measuring 105x68 metres on the tussock plains of Mackenzie Country in front of Aoraki Mt Cook was created by hand over six weeks using the strictest environmental and sustainability principles to ensure the land could be restored to its pristine condition after the game.

[...] Tourism New Zealand worked with local iwi and the Department of Conservation to ensure the project respected mana whenua and had no lasting impact on the land.
