Control is the game for people with money and power whether it is graceful or not. Some of what Elon has done seems like he wants to control the narrative around his jet. Some of what Elon is doing seems like he just wants to keep testing the waters to see how many people still use twitter after crippling the system. Like some sort of “I slap them in the face and they ask to be hit harder- that’s how much power I have over them. People are obsessed with me”.

I don’t think his goal was to kill twitter. His goal was to remain on everyone’s lips without his jet being mentioned. And if that’s at the cost of organizational tools being destroyed, so be it- in fact, destroying twitter has had more people taking about him than ever.

I think the annotations are just backing up the claim that the videos are being too rushed- which is definitely true. It’s a video of a guy in front of a green screen, not some off-site video. They could’ve easily reshot the entire thing in an afternoon if they weren’t so rushed. The fact that it wasn’t reshot probably means that the video editors are likely being too tightly managed as well.

The only obnoxious thing about touring-specific tires is the fact that they’re so obnoxious to put on or take off your rim. It’s certainly a hand workout. I used some Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires on a 4,000+ mile tour and only had to replace tubes once (due to truck tire beading getting stuck in the sidewalk of the tire).

Would apple just roll over on this? Or would they fight to make sure safari is also an option to freely use the internet (or at least severely limiting apples ability to do something similar) And websites that depend on ads, the number of Firefox and safari users have to be greater than the number of users who use ad-blockers. So wouldn’t it negatively affect ad income on websites if they implemented it and cut out all non-chromium browsers?

Yeah the revolution has to be done very carefully or else a TON of people will die of starvation in the transition. I think dissolving the state is necessary, but disrupting things like farms and power plants etc would remain and would be worked by the people who worked there under capitalism (though, no bosses). It’d essentially make all businesses a worker owned co-op, which we know to work since there’s quite a few successful co-ops around now.

I don’t think governors or mayors or bosses are the people who gets their hands dirty to help the water start flowing in a community again. And I doubt the workers need to be threatened with homelessness so they do that job. Just have average people do the job that needs being done. They are able to fix community issues similar to people who know how to build houses. Similar to people who can set up local networking. Similar to farmers. Similar to doctors. Their needs are also met by people who are able to provide to them. Specialists can still exist, but they don’t have any sway over how the community is run more so than anyone else in that community.

“The state is the institution or complex of institutions which bases itself on the availability of forcible coercion by special agencies of society in order to maintain the dominance of a ruling class, preserve the existing property relations from basic change and keep all other classes in subjection.”

To not have hierarchies of power means to not have a state. Thinking that a state could be just a group of people who settle issues that need to be settled is one interpretation, though that’s not what many, if any communists think when they say “state”. The structure of power currently resembles a pyramid scheme in a lot of people’s eyes. The people at the top have made the game (capitalists), maintain the game (through politics), put people in place to uphold the game (police), and the people at the bottom pay for the game (workers).

I don’t really think you need a state to have administrative powers over large things like food production, power, and other utilities. Ideally the communities would be fully self sufficient in power, food, water, housing, etc. Big power plants that supply power to a massive amount of people would be difficult to set up, but is still possible with enough community effort.

The biggest threat to communism and socialism is that capitalist countries will starve them out of international trade (or do more active things to try to prevent a successful communist movement) because they won’t play ball. It would be extremely easy for a capitalist team to destroy a few small crops and kill any chance of self sufficiency- meaning they’d have to depend on trade with those capitalist countries.

Yeah it’s not a perfect metaphor. Though, I guess even if an admin is terrible and abused their power, it has way less influence on Lemmy as a whole than if Spez abused their power on Reddit. Also, you’re free to create and host your own instance and run it however you’d like.

To make the metaphor more apt, every member of the server would own a part of the server and could vote democratically on how they want the server to run. It would involve no hierarchies of power, so there’s no mods and admins. Though, I really don’t know how this would work technically in regards to having thousands of people own a server (or if it’s even possible).

So like the Lemmy platform, communism would be easier to manage the less people are involved. That’s why people say that communism only works in tribes and small villages. I’m not under the illusion that it wouldn’t be difficult, and I think communism would lead to a bit more of an insular society as a whole, but I think that if everyone had realistic expectations and goals, it definitely seems more ideal that the current situation where we’re just being yanked around by the whims of ultra rich people trying to skim more from the top of the people doing actual work.

Communism is when no state as central power.

Communism is a community dictating how it should behave itself and how it allocates skills and resources.

If authoritarian centralized power focused on capital is Reddit, decentralized independent federated communities that dictate how they should behave themselves and allocate skills and resources would be lemmy

I used pods to move from California to SC because I can work remotely, get paid a CA wage, could afford a house for the first time, while living close to family in SC.

Covid lockdowns in big cities made them feel much smaller and that started to feel a little claustrophobic- living in a tiny apartment, not really leaving that much. At least there’s more room to stretch out in smaller cities, but now that things are seemingly going back to normal (not that I think SC had any shifts in that aspect to begin with), I’d much rather be somewhere that doesn’t feel so hostile.

That being said, after a couple years of being here the vibes here are bad and I intend on moving possibly to Minneapolis as soon as I can.

It's not the numerous postal service designations that people are pissed at though. It's the bills that are making my friends flee the state that people are rightly pissed at. Not every republican is an extremist, but the extremists have control over the party and the rest of the party seems completely fine with them at the wheel. Either it's extreme apathy or tacit agreement.

“We wanted to reduce the effect of the membrane as much as possible, since it’s heavy,”

Aren’t speaker membranes the lightest part of a speaker? I’d figure these things would still need amplifiers, would be highly dependent on where you sit (possibly amplifying unpleasant noise if you shift your position even a little bit due to phase), would generate ozone, and they don’t even really sound good when playing music, which means the ANC capabilities of them would be limited in the best case scenario.

I don’t know. Other “whole room ANC” devices have come and gone and none of them seem to work. It’s a great idea in theory, but I don’t know if this tech is any different in nature to just using membrane speakers.

ANC is already used in cars with moderate results, but you generally sit in one spot and there’s already speakers in your car.

It’s such a great show! I wish it wasn’t killed by the HBO/Discovery merge, but each season is kind of self contained, so while the major secrets of the story are still pretty hidden due to it being cancelled, every season stands on its own really well and wraps up main character arcs.

I don’t think you can find it on HBO anymore, but you can certainly find it other places online.

I desperately wanted this movie to be Arcane or Mitchell’s vs The Machines or Infinity Train levels of emotional jabs, but being a kids movie, I think it does a good job.

[ obvious spoiler alert] I do wish it resolved a bit differently. It being a trans allegory, it was kind of tiring seeing nimona be sacrificed in the story to make things better, though I’ll agree the changes don’t seem to go nearly far enough. (people felt bad nimona is dead because they saved the city, but I doubt the citizens changed their minds on what it means to demonize someone different to themselves in general) There’s a shot where people are traveling outside of the wall, but there’s still a wall. The citizens should feel shame over the wall. They should feel shame over the institution that uses violence to harm those who are different. And yet at the end, they’re happy in their little perfect utopian society with a little memorial wall to make themselves feel better with no more diversity inside their city walls.

I’m torn. I don’t want to think this is a bad movie just because of an ending that fell flat for me. I think it is just a bit “safe” for me. Other than the ending, the messaging was great and I loved the comedic timing.

Tangent here: Not sure if you've seen Owl House, but they show a tamagotchi-like device in the second season** where you can send little pictograph messages to your friends and WHAT I'D GIVE TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT. It reminded me a bit of Pictochat on the DS. But I know any device that was made would be pretty expensive since it would need wireless even if it wasn't internet-connected. So that means it'd have a high resolution screen to justify the price, which would make it more expensive, then thicker for bigger batteries. It just doesn't seem realistic or even something I'd want in the end with all the upgrades.

I do really miss little devices with low resolution displays. A lot of charm goes away for me when you don't have to use your imagination at all- same with furbies that speak in clear english. There's SO much room for expanding on the ideas of furbies and tamagotchis that hasn't been explored, but unfortunately, I'm not sure if that'll ever actually exist until a group of nerds get together and makes it happen. Being able to fight and collect things and have actual permanence in the game without babying the digital pet constantly would be amazing!

Oh! I actually thought the Furby Connect was another mainline furby, but I honestly didn't find it good looking, so I passed on it completely (I've been more of a tamagotchi person anyway). I think a lot of the "furbies are creepy" opinions are just rehashed fear from the lies that were spread about the first couple furbies. I wasn't allowed to have one when I was a kid because the people on tv said it was creepy because they might have cameras and would record children.

If my parents knew I have a stripped gen 2 furby with a single eyelash on my shelf looking like a skeleton, they'd definitely think it was creepy haha

Didn’t the terrifying Furby Connects of like 2016 have the ability to connect to internet-connected apps and would send OTA updates to the furby on a weekly basis? I think the furby itself was receive-only and wouldn’t send anything, but I might be wrong. I still think it’s fair to say that furby was at least semi-connected to the internet.

    What's everyone's remote work setup?

Not sure how many of you are still working remotely, but I've transitioned to permanently remote with contract work between gigs. I was just wondering what everyone else's setup is when it comes to remote work and if you're still trying to reach for a better setup. I bought an M1 mac mini back in 2020 as a "temporary" setup when our company switched to remote work. Since all the processing was done on in-office trashcan macs and we used screen sharing software to remote in, it didn't matter how fast my home machine was; only that my internet was fast. Since then, I've gotten a few clients and have had to upgrade my computer since the mac mini was really struggling with RAM. Anyway, here's the list of things I use for my daily editing: **Remote work software: ** Jump Desktop **Home office setup: ** M2 Max Macbook Pro Mac mini is sitting headless, attached to a 2.5g switch with external storage attached to its thunderbolt and USB ports. I basically just use it as a rudimentary NAS so I can work off network storage. There is probably a way better way to do this, but I figure I should use the stuff I have rather than build a dedicated NAS with TrueNAS Core.
