Yes, I have had this conversation with obviously gullible people here on Lemmy over the past year. I remember some guy saying how Tim Pool is such an intellectual. I found out that it's caffeine. I always thought i just naturally wanted to stay up until 2:30am, and then be okay waking at 6am for work.

Turns out that when I drink even a single cup of coffee, it totally fucks up the thing in my brain that tells me I'm tired.

So I started the lengthy process of cutting out all coffee.....and after a week or so...holy shit...I was EXHAUSTED by 9:30pm. Like, I'd fall asleep in my computer chair at like 10:30. My sleep started to regulate. I felt so much better.

Like, you don't realize how much of your brain is operating in this hazy fog...until you've slept properly for a couple weeks. I could concentrate on things, I wasnt so lazy. I WANTED to do more things.

    Yeah, sorta.

    • 311 is a shit show. You have to pretty much get involved with your local government officials to get literally anything done, otherwise you can just live with your pothole.
    • City officials have had a hard on for a minor league baseball stadium for fucking YEARS. They asked Richmond citizens for their vote on it, and every single time people said fuck no. It's $110 million that could have been used to repair crumbling infrastructure, provide support programs, add additional affordable housing, repair our busted streets....noooo, why do that when we can go to a fucking minor league baseball game. Good idea Stoney. It's getting built by 2026. That'll for sure bring in money Stoney. Wonder what sort of kick back he's getting as he's only been pushing it for like 5 years.
    • City officials also hard a hard on for a casino to bring in additional "needed money" that they planned to throw in absolutely terrible locations. No one wanted it. I think we had to vote it down like half a dozen times. Petersburg, a crumbling ruin struggling town is now voting to add it. Just what it needs.
    • Look up the history of Jackson Ward.
    • Shcokoe Bottome still has buildings were destroyed in the flood back 30 years ago that have yet to be revitalized (but a fucking stadium is fine, right?)

Thats just off the top of my head. Love it here though. Just....lots of annoyances.

That only introduces new problems. Your advocating essentially for socialism as a replacement for capitalism.

....and socialism will never work without a central authority overseeing it.

....so you'll need a revolutionary war in order to wrestle control from the bourgeoisie....

....which will lead to massive bloodshed and economic turmoil.

I think a more realistic approach would be to instill socialist ideals on our current capitalist system, such as salary caps, wealth taxes, inheretence tax tiers, UBI, socialized safety nets, etc. Rather than trying to redo our entire economic and governmental system.

Communism inevitably will always lead to dictatorship and totalitarianism.

In order to become a communist state, you have to: 1.) Get a bit army or group of people to enforce the upcoming rules. 2.) Force people to get rid of private ownership or threaten them to give it up. This will piss a lot of people off. 3.) Get rid of them if they don't. This will piss a lot of people off. 4.) Realize that you've pissed a lot of people off, and that your the only power in the land, you definitely don't want to give this up. 5.) Enact a single party system.....oh, fuck....

Communism doesn't work on a large-scale, and it's not sustainable. By it's very nature it's extremely prone to abuse, and fundamentally impossible to install any sort of checks and balances on a single party-system. Look how bad it is with a two-party system in the US.

Yes, let's create a martyr of Trump. Fantastic idea. No way that would have backfired. Nosiree.

Democrats tried to do things by the book. Legally. You know, the way things should be done. Not by escalating tensions with more violence.

Democrats are absolutely infuriated by all of this. The shear frustration that more is not able to be done. Hell, look at Jack Smith and everything he's been fighting for and trying to get pushed through. There have never been lawsuits like this brought against a former President - shit has to be airtight. You can't just walk into court and say, "Trump sucks, he's a menace, lock him up," and expect Trump to get hauled off to jail.

Your not being remotely realistic about how things SHOULD happen. Sure, the reactionary in me would have loved to know that the traitor got drawn and quartered, but the realist in me knows that it wouldn't have done anything but beget more violence and extremism from the right. Trump cronies structured the Judicial System in his favor, and yes. He's a fucking menace, but it's not likely we've lost here, Kamala will win and he'll get fucked. Let's do this legally, and not take the "Nuclear, who cares about the fallout" option.

I highly highly highly recommend making gummies instead. I purchased gummy molds so I know EXACTLY how much I'm dosing. They take like 10 minutes to make (but a couple days to dry). You can't burn them, and if you fuck anything up, you can just remelt and pour again.

You can you make a half cup of oil last like 2months. Do it with the right weed, you have a clean, consistent, amazing high.

According to ASME Y14.5, I believe you are correct. You can establish a central axis, but you still have to establish WHICH surface dictates that axis. So I'm entirely unsure where everyone is getting the Note Call-out from.

Only thing I can think of is a bigger company like Boeing or Airbus has been calling out something similar on a drawing and people are just going "oooooh, that's an acceptable thing". It started somewhere....

GD&T: When did companies start thinking that Total Runout could lack a datum?

I've been dealing with this for months. I've received yet another drawing from a company calling "Diameters on a common axis/center to be 0.XX" TIR U.O.I. " Total Runout requires a Datum. Your "common axis" is not a datum and can not referenced. It's driving me mad. Like, where did everyone get this notion that it's acceptable? It'd be one thing if it was just one or two drawings, but I'm into the dozens at this point. It's getting to the point that I'm starting to question if I'm either the one in the wrong or everyone has some sort of mass psychosis. Am I in the wrong here?

Need some advice...is the dough supposed to be this sticky?

I tried my hand at making a starter years ago and it went poorly. I was gifted some starter earlier this week and have been bulking it up in order to bake some bread this weekend. The starter is MUCH better than any of the ones I've ever made, so Ive had high hopes all week that my sourdough will actually come out decent this time. I've been following [this](https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/rustic-sourdough-bread-recipe) recipe, and it's been going....not well. Everything was weighed to the gram, including the starter, and "lukewarm" water was about 80ish degrees. The dough is so unbelievably sticky that I can barely scrape it off the sides of the bowl. Is this normal? It's been years since I've done this so I'm back to questioning everything. I'm planning to just drop the whole thing into a Dutch oven and cook it, but I understand that I'm deviating from the recipe. My Dutch oven cooks were just so much better. Cna anyone provide a better recipe for just a basic sourdough boule that you've had decent success with? I'd really like to continue baking bread, but I know for a fact that I'll wind up giving up again if I have too many failures (I think I baked 8 different times a few years ago, and I gave up because they were always so dense, and flat.). Really want something with a good, fluffy, stretchy crumb. Any advice or questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Little bacterium may make big impact on rare-earth processing https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2023/12/231218130041.htm

A tiny, hard-working bacterium -- which weighs one-trillionth of a gram -- may soon have a large influence on processing rare earth elements in an eco-friendly way. "Traditional thermochemical methods for separating lanthanides are environmentally horrible," said Buz Barstow, assistant professor of biological and environmental engineering at Cornell, the corresponding author. "It's difficult to refine these elements. That's why we send rare earth elements offshore -- generally to China -- to process them."

Surprising discovery shows electron beam radiation can repair nanostructures https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2023/10/231012111712.htm

Not sure how useful it is yet, but it sounds like with some AI and proper cameras you could use it to completely repair certain components. Theres something similar to this using electrochemical plating to repair microfractures throughout a component - only downside is that it takes like weeks to do it properly (I'll see if I can dig up the paper later)

Researchers create method for making net-zero aviation fuel https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2022/11/221129112706.htm

The proposed fuel is not SAF, it's a combination of magnesium and hydrogen mixed with hydrocarbon fuel. It's estimated to give 8% more range over other existing aviation fuels.

Need help sourcing viscosity and density vs temperature for JP-8 and other aviation fuels.

Why is it so difficult to find a good source for this information? I can find half a dozen research papers but no real good centralized source for these things.

MechE's, what would you like to see in this community?

Hello everyone! I'm looking for suggestions in how we can grow and develop this community. We have a chance to develop something interesting and the impetus of this change will rely upon all of us to make it happen. Are there any ideas that you'd like to see implemented here? Community events? Challenges? Support? I'd love to see this place flourish, and anything that I can do to draw interest would be fantastic. Thanks for your suggestions!

    Nemesis or Nemesis Lockdown?

My local board game shop sells Nemesis lockdown and I'm trying to decide if I should buy it or not. The game looks awesome, however, it's a little pricey. Heard some people state that lockdown was a little harder to learn, and then they'd recommend newer players learn the original prior to getting the lockdown version. I did have a few other questions about it though. Do the expansions work with lockdown? Is there any additional player expansions that you can add on to it? We have a gaming group regularly with 5 to 7 people, it'd be really nice if we could fit those additional two people on.

Discussion Thread: How has AI affected your workflow?

I understand that this could be rather controversial, but I feel like AI is coming whether we wanted to or not. I know some companies have already started taking steps towards AI and automation in general, others are avoiding it until it becomes more robust. How have you or your company integrated AI into your workflow so far? Do you believe that you've benefited from the use of AI at your workplace, or do you feel like it's introducing more problems than it's solving?

Inventor Worldcup Challenge! Anyone remember these?

The goal was to time how long it took you to generate the model on your first attempt. It relied on user honesty as you don't really win anything, but atleast you could see how you stacked up against other CAD users. You can confirm if you have the right design by checking the Volume of your component after you feel that you've "completed" the design. I've done this one before. It's very fun. If your interesting in trying it out, post your time below. I'm curious to see how you guys do. I'll post my time on Monday.

How many people have worked on "configurators" or "smart assemblies"?

I've been interested in possibly pursuing a new business opportunity doing this. I've noticed that almost every single company is interested in automation, however very few people within the company are actually able to do something along these lines as it's a twofold problem: you need someone that's extremely proficient in both CAD software and coding. And I'm not talking about just configurable parts, I'm talking full assemblies that have logic built into them, capable of updating or generating full drawings. So I really wanted to gauge how often you guys have been exposed to it, and I wanted to know how many people in your company are likely even capable of doing it. In my company of around 50-60 engineers, there are about 3. The third one would likely struggle a bit, but he'd likely be able to figure things out after enough time on forums.

Got tired of waiting for an ME Community...So I made my own!

Hello everyone, there's nothing here yet, but I want/need this community within Lemmy. Assistance is sometimes necessary to learn and grow, and I'm trying to stay off of Reddit - which can be difficult when you've got questions to ask or things you need to discuss. I'm hoping that we'll be able to create a robust and thriving ME community. Let's make it happen!
