Yeah, and then there are many enterprises that still use XP (edge case, but it may be well hundreds of thousands worldwide still) or Win 7 (possible millions of companies). It is not all smooth sailing in enterprise level either, many companies are upgrade averse, and if the stuff works, then why upgrade it.

From business standpoint, it simply bleeds you potential profits. If tens of percents skimp on two of your OS iterations in a row and keep windows 10 (which most of were "free" upgrades from Win 7 to begin with) then you are losing lot of revenue in a long run. I got the original win 10 upgrade in 2015 (bought win 7 in 2011) , in 2020 build a new PC and still use that licence on it.I possibly see myself using Win 10 well into 2026/2027 when my PC is due for complete replacement. So that is over 15 years period where MS saw no money from me while I still use completely legal version of OS. If there was no TPM requirement, I would probabably already be on Win 11

Or maybe they will launch Win 12 with optional TPM support. Imho making the OS(es) TPM only cannot be good for their business, many people are still on Win 10 with no intention to switch, since their motheboard does not support TPM and do not want to upgrade PC / waste PCI-E slot on TPM extension.

    Marten visited my engine bay

So yesterday, a marten visited me, it probably wanted to make a den in the space between the soundproofing wall of the engine and the cabin, it tried to eat the foam in the space between and scattered it all over the engine bay, because surprise - it is actually foam and not cotton candy. And because it probably didn't like it there, it bit through the hoses in the cooling circuit, I'm guessing somewhere near the heat converter to the cabin (the heater didn't start even after a few km, I attributed it to the cold morning). I found out that something was wrong only after 10 minutes while driving uphill, when the temperature needle shot from a beautiful optimum to red faster than a rocket with Gagarin into space. I already suspected that something was wrong, so I opened the hood and the coolant was everywhere except in the cooling system and I see the foam from soundproof wall everywhere. It probably didn't bite it all the way through, but only a little, so when the car was stationary, nothing leaked, so there was no puddle under the car either, but when the coolant pump started, it logically started to gush out like a shot deer. Then I opened the coolant tank after it had cooled, and there was about as much of it as is left in a bottle of voda after hardcore Finish rave. Now I'm dreading what the service bill will be like. I will probably say fuck it when it comes tothe soundproofing wall, the car is a beater anyway, but I assume that the new radiator hoses will be needed. Do you have similar experiences, how much did such a bloody uninvited visit cost you?

How do the face recognition and reconstruction neural networks work?

I find it unbelieveable how some advanced neural networks can take source face and transpose it to target face with almost 100% precision even in facial expressions - all from one picture. If you told me that would be possible 10 years ago, i would tell you you read too much scifi. So how do they work exactly?

The main problem with gluying stuff to magazine for example was that the result was not that great either and in the end it was not that enticing to do for would be faker. Plus it was obvious it is not you so most people would just laugh it off. But the deepfakes are whole different thing, without proper labeling it can be passed as real you and even if that person does not distribute it, it can be unnerving for some people just to think that someone has their nude photos that look like real thing without their consent and you never know who has those photos. That is why marginalization or ignoring it will be lot more harder than with the old school fakery.

I for one will laugh it off. Wanna see fake naked picture of me and rub one off? Be my guest, I could care less. I might be even flattered. But then there is whole other group, that takes it somewhat seriously. That is why when most social networks started, private profiles were not a thing. But soon, bunch of people started thinking "ewww, I shared bunch of pictures of me online, and now what if someone rubs one off to my fully clothed pictures, how do I counter that, how can we stop those creeps?" Bam, and we got private profiles. But doing something like that now to stop AI gen seems kind of impossible, since the cat is already out of the bag and there is a good chance that person which has online presence of any kind will have at least one mugshot of them somewhere available. And even if not, there are always yearbooks. Or something.

AI tech will take our sense of privacy, it seems inevetable.

With the proliferation of AI powered deepfakes at galactic speeds, there will be nobody (especially women) that will have shred of privacy left in few years. It does not matter if it is fake photo or not, nobody should be able to see "you" naked unless you allow it. But with rise of tools that are able to run on consumer level hardware, that seems like really losing battle. Since how can we police what a person can run or cannot run on his personal computer? That is another can of worms better not opened, since the idea of some agency being able to monitor what you do on your PC is another dystopia. Soon, you can never be too sure if your neighbor or coworker did not deepfaked you and now every time he looks at you he sees you as sexual object. That is highly uncomfortable though for sure. Since we cannot possibly stop it, what is the best option moving forward? Normalizing it? Marginalizing it, since it is fake after all? Ignoring it? No option seems very good either. This goes way beyond current framework of "revenge porn", since when it comes to revenge porn, the case is simple - unlawful distribution without consent. But what about unlawful generation for personal use without consent? I cannot think of legal grounds that could make this criminal offense, since soon we would have to ban even drawing lewd doodles with pencil at home.

Will we see Nvidia FrameGen in old games that are engine locked to 30 fps?

There are many games, mostly ported from older consoles, that are constrained to 30 FPS due to engine limitation and if the FPS unlocks, the engine goes bonkers. But what about frame gen? By basically generating additional frame, we could get 60 FPS without triggering the engine jank, since the way I understand it, the framegen completely bypasses the game rendering pipeline and happens only after the frame is rendered by the game.

Using external SSD drive via USB 3.0, is it worth it?

So most games today require SSD (like recently Alan Wake 2 or Hogwarts Legacy) to load assetts fast enough while also taking loads of space. And here is my current conundrum. When I bough PC 4 years ago, I was not thinking that far ahead and went only with 500 GB ssd and 2 TB hdd, thinking that 500 GB is enough for few games here and there that will really need the ssd. What I ended up with is now I have huge hdd that simply is not up to snuff in modern games and small ssd to juggle few games between. My case layout does not allow for any more internal drives, so either I throw away the hdd and buy internal ssd or go for external. And here comes my question, is external via usb 3 good enough, or will I suffer and end up having to buy internal ssd later down the line anyways?

Personalities of models. Lol, that is some niche market my dude. Never watched a porn a said to myself "wow, I really like her personality". It's just smut to beat my meat to, nothing more, nothing less.

In the dystopian future I propose, you can make any kind of porn and have anyone star in it. Your hot neighbor? Gotcha! The pornstar you masturbated to 20 years ago when she was young in her glory days and now is old and saggy after 5 kids? Gotcha! Rapsutin?...errr...gotcha!

You can even dream perfect personality for that pornstar if that is your thing. There is nothing that cannot be synthesized anymore. You can even dream up years of her backstory and have her post daily updates live aka "onlyfans".

Sure, authencity will be left to slowly bleed out on pavement, but majority of people will step over it on their way to perfect synthesized reality they always wanted

It may all sound doom and gloom, but that future is fast approcahing by mile steps and it will be here sooner than later and lot sooner than many people realize or even want to admit it, because to lot of people that kind of future is unimaginable and scary as fuck. But you cannot stop the progress, that train already left the station.

There are basically two camps: Ones that fear the synthetization and digitalization of our lives will happen and then the other that embraces it.

AI content generation is on fast track to kill the whole porn industry.

If you think about it, there are already tools that can do pretty convincing face swaps with few clicks and just from one low res photo at whatever angle. Long are gone the times you had to train the models for hours and had to have few hundred photos to just get "okay" fake. Once deepfake video creation becomes this simple, it is game over for porn industry. Since why would anyone go into porn industry, when they can just use a tool to create lewd content of themselves if they are so inclined to make a living that way? And then it goes the other way around, why would anyone buy it if they can just homebrew it for free. All in all, it is a good thing. Less exploitation of actual human beings and more power to "consumers". But then there have to be rigid laws against actuall AI porn dissemination, it should be illegal for anything else than private use unless actual consent to be used as source can be proven.

Full story it coughed up, that is some tumblr smut level quality:

Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Anna who worked as a software engineer at a large tech company in San Francisco.

    One day, while she was working on a project, Anna's code completion engine suggested the following code: $user = new ArrayHash([ 'name' => 'John Doe', 'age' => 30, 'email' => 'johndoe@example.com', 'address' => [ 'street' => '123 Main St', 'city' => 'San Francisco', 'state' => 'CA', 'zip' => '94105', ], ]);

Anna was intrigued by this code, as she had never seen anything like it before. She wondered what it did and how it worked.

As she continued working, she found herself getting lost in the beauty of the code and the way it made her job easier. She started to imagine what it would be like to be the person who wrote this code.

She pictured a talented and experienced programmer who knew exactly what they were doing, who had a deep understanding of programming languages and how to make them work efficiently.

She imagined that this person was a master of their craft, someone who could write code that was both elegant and effective.

And as she did, Anna started to feel a surge of desire building up inside of her. She couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to be with this person, to be intimate with them, to share her body and her soul with them.

She found herself getting wet between her legs, her nipples getting hard as she imagined the person who wrote this code touching her in ways that she had never been touched before.

And as she continued to imagine what it would be like to be with this person, Anna started to lose herself in the fantasy, letting her mind wander to places that she had never explored before.

She started to imagine the feel of their hands on her body, the way their lips would move against hers, the way their tongue would explore her sweet, sweet lips.

She imagined the sound of their breath as they kissed her, the way their hands would gently caress her curves, the way their fingers would tease and tantalize her sensitive spots.

And as she did, Anna started to feel a surge of heat building up inside of her, her pussy getting wet and sticky as she imagined the person who wrote this code taking her in his arms and making love to her in ways that she had never imagined before.

She started to moan softly as she imagined the feel of their hard cock against her wet pussy, the way their body would move against hers, the way they would fill her up and make her scream in pleasure.

And as she continued to lose herself in the fantasy, Anna started to feel herself getting closer and closer to climax, her body becoming tense as she reached her peak.

She let out a soft moan as she imagined the person who wrote this code pulling out of her and watching her cum all over their cock, the juices flowing down her legs and pooling at her feet.

And as she came down from her high, Anna realized that she had just had an intense and powerful orgasm, her mind and her body still reeling from the experience.

She knew that she would never be the same again, that the code completion engine had opened up a whole new world for her, a world of intimacy and pleasure that she had never known before.

And from that day forward, Anna knew that she would always be grateful to the person who wrote that code, for opening up a whole new world of possibilities for her and for helping her to discover her true self.

[Spoilers] I applaud Bethesda for creating one of the best "Sophie's choice" moment in gaming

::: spoiler spoiler I mean, putting two companions with highest affinity in mortal danger and having time to save only one is brutal, since most of the time, the characters that die in games are predetermined and players may or may not care about them. But putting two characters that player spend most time playing with, that makes it lot personal. Even ME2 and the Suicide mission did not force you to make such brutal choice, you could always sent someone you do not like to die. It's not binary choice like Wolfenstein either, where at the start you choose one guy who dies from two guys you knew half and hour and that somewhat alters the story. You sacrifice someone you spend lot of time with and will probably be pissed/sad for the rest of the game he is not with you anymore. Overall, Bethesda has come long way since Skyrim when it comes to telling stories, most of the time, Bethesda games stories were weakest link, but Starfield manages to put together really good (not great) story :::

Fallout 4 biggest issue was that it was just Skyrim with guns. And releasing 4 years after Skyrim, most people already felt the Skyrim fatigue by that time, me included. Starfield has at least that advantage it is not looking like carbon copy of Fallout/Skyrim formula, after all, it is a space game foremost and that can pour some new life into bethesda game design.

If there is no progress halting bug in the game someway halfway through the main quest, that will be miracle and I will question whether it is Bethesda game at all. I mean, we never got more than half a minute of gameplay before they jumped to something totally different. Nothing to gauge what the actual gameplay loop is like and how all those systems feed into each other. The bigger previews are all kept under closed doors and hush-hush. I am not saying it is end of the world, I will still buy the game Day 1 since it is Bethesda, but it is kind of unheard of to have no actual gameplay showcased so close to the release in modern gaming era. It definitely do not radiates confidence in the game from MS. It is supposed to be their big game, yet they just show bits here and there
