Upgraded to 0.18.2! Apologies for the downtime

To start -- apologies for the extended downtime. I ran into several issues with the server, but was finally able to get it back up, and upgraded on the newest release of Lemmy. Thank you to everyone for the patience while I worked through it! I've been working on some major updates related to Wirebase. I'll come back in the next day with an announcement.

Welcome!

For the new ppl here to the community, just wanna say welcome! This is an exciting time to find your way to the Fediverse. It's a massive network and has potential to be even larger. I see so many new and interesting communities pop up daily with members that are here to share knowledge and collaborate with others as well simply be social and chat, even large social platforms are now finding their way to the Fediverse as well. Threads by Instagram/Facebook is now part of this huge space. This is a great thing, I feel with large social platforms finding their way here network stability will increase. There's some cons to this too. We all know when big business moves to town the ads come as well. What is everyone's thoughts on this? 🐈‍⬛

Why can’t I find certain communities when logged into my WireBase account?

There seem to be many communities that should be discoverable if I search for them by name, but don’t appear in search results for me when I’m logged into my WireBase account. I can see them when I’m logged into my Lemmy.World account. It doesn’t matter whether I’m using an App or web browser. Why?

Creating a new community

Hey all, I'm a newer user interested in creating an Oregon hiking/backpacking community, but have been unsuccessful. I believe I need permission to do this, but wanted to see if anyone had any guidance.

Thanks @tyfi

Hey @tyfi, thanks for making an instance for Lemmy that works pretty good from Spokane. I am sure that this place will soon start to get more and more people. One question I have is, how can I make clicks that take me away from Wirebase open in a new tab/window? Is that just not a thing for the LemmyNet code?

Email Verification and Password Resets added to Wirebase

Small update tonight. I provisioned email for Wirebase, which will now unblock a couple features: - Password resets are now possible through Settings - New sign-ups will require email verification (this wasn’t possible before)

**There are those that say a picture is worth a thousand words...meh, I require only two...for those interested you can help Christian (Apollo app) refund the yearly premium subscribers of Apollo by getting what may be the last of Apollo merch here https://cottonbureau.com/people/apollo also you can apply the promo RIPAPOLLO for a 10% discount. I'm as of now unsure how to support the devs and Narwhal community but there are talks on various forums, once I find out more I will post the info here. Much respect to those that stand with and contribute to this irrational move by Huffman. 🐈‍⬛**

NoT WrOnG www.staygrounded.online

I just checked the and noticed Polygon has been steadily decreasing in value since Huffman's ridiculous price for use of the API....well ya know. Now for the creators there their once valuable avatar NFT's are slowly beginning to take a tumble and feel the heat as well. Thought this article was quite fitting. Also I noticed Christian from Apollo has got some Apollo merch for sale at a discount to cover refunds to the Apollo app premium members. Use promo code RIPAPOLLO and you get 10% off at his site. I find this truly bad for the platform and don't see it recovering anytime in the near future. Its good to have another platform (here) and kickstart something that I hope to see go mainstream and be a wonderful and valuable asset to others. 🐈‍⬛

What is Lemmy (and how do you use it)?

# What is Lemmy? Lemmy is a discussion platform similar to Reddit. Users create posts, post pictures, make comments, and group up in "communities" to exchange ideas and talk about topics they are interested in. ## How do you sign up for Lemmy? You can sign up at [wirebase.org/signup](https://wirebase.org/signup). That's the Lemmy server that this post is on. Unlike Reddit, anyone can host a Lemmy server. All Lemmy servers talk to each other (a "mesh"), so regardless of which server you sign-up for, you'll be able to participate in worldwide discussions. ## How do you use Lemmy? After signing-up, you'll want to find "Communities" that you're interested in. These are like subreddits from Reddit. To find one, first click "[Communities](https://wirebase.org/communities)" on the top menu bar, and type in the search bar. If the community you're looking for is listed, then great -- you can open it and start reading and commenting on posts. If the Community you're interested in isn't listed, then it most likely exists, but has not yet been added to [wirebase.org](https://wirebase.org) (or whichever server you're using). Subscribing to a new Community is straight forward (next section). ## How do I find and add new Communities (subreddits) on Lemmy? To add a Community, you need to: (1) Search for the Community; (2) Copy its address, and; (3) Enter the Community address. Keep in mind that you only need to do this one time, ever. **1. Finding Lemmy Communities:** The easiest way to find Communities is by going to [browse.feddit.de](https://browse.feddit.de). On this site, you can search globally for a Community you are interested in. If there are multiple servers hosting the same Community topic, then you should add the one at the top with the most subscribers (this will be the most active). **2. Copy Community Address:** After finding a Community, just click on the "copy address" button (image below). ![](https://wirebase.org/pictrs/image/c7c23a75-9b33-4dfe-a74d-d7daea107ada.png) **3. Add the Community:** On [wirebase.org](https://wirebase.org), on the Community screen, enter the address which you copied in the last step into the search bar (it's a URL). This adds the Community to the server. Refresh the Communities page and it will now appear. ## How do I subscribe to a Lemmy Community? To subscribe to a Lemmy Community, just go to the [Community page](https://wirebase.org/communities), search for it, then hit "subscribe" on the right side.

ActivityPub platforms are very different

I've been on the Mastodon for a few years now and while I knew other services existed on ActivityPub, I rarely used them and I didn't have an account on any of them until now because I thought the content would be the same because they're all federated. You can view a Lemmy post just as well on Mastodon. Now I'm finally trying out Lemmy and I'm discovering how different it is from Mastodon. Totally different content! I thought it was pretty cool to see.
