[TC Letters to the Editor] Let’s make big plans for large new ferries

With the B.C. Ferries fleet having reached capacity, I think it’s time to accelerate the plans to purchase new vessels for the major routes. To help to make them more future-proof, I think the new vessels should be at least 200 metres long, preferably a good deal longer. As well as increasing the capacity, plus enabling greater efficiencies by transporting more people and vehicles at a time, it would allow for the greater possibility of changes being made to on-board amenities over the coming decades. It would also allow for improvements over the current ferries, such as more dining options, a larger shop and a very large kids play area. Unlike some people, I love getting the ferry. With improvements to onboard amenities, I believe that other people would, too, and would look forward to that part of the journey. When the route between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay takes one hour and 35 minutes, plus waiting time beforehand, it is hardly a route that daily commuters can take. Instead, let’s adopt a different philosophy, of providing comfort, relaxation and enjoyment, rather than a bare-bones platform to be transported on. Matthew Cousins

Somewhat clickbait title, it went from 80% to 89% of new unit starts for this one month period compared to last year. Apartment units have been the majority of new units for more than a decade now.

What are some cafes/pubs to get some work done?

Does anyone know any good cafes/pubs where one can work on a laptop for a while when they're not busy? Preferably somewhere with Wi-Fi and a patio.

Walmart put family planning merchandise behind locked glass

Just noticed while shopping today that Walmart locked up the family planning products. This includes pregnancy tests which I think should not have another barrier to getting them. The same with birth control like condoms. I really doubt a lot of young couples are going to want to get staff to help them access such personal things like condoms and lube.

How much do you tip for beer?

I always thought tipping $1 a beer was the norm. Unfortunately, the waitress looked disappointed when I gave her $3 for three beers. Maybe it's because it was table service at a touristy pub? What do you guys think?

Ship out of service means extra busy long weekend in Swartz Bay, Tsawwassen: BC Ferries www.cheknews.ca

Good luck to anyone that's heading to or from the mainland this weekend. They're running 3 ships instead of 4. BC Ferries is encouraging anyone without a reservation to go as a walk-on passenger.
