Woman Fights Off Tiger With Bare Hands To Save Baby Son

25-year-old Archana Choudhary was in a field on the outskirts of the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, when a fully-grown tiger appeared from the bushes and began to drag her one-year-old into the undergrowth. Archana managed to wrestle her son away from the tiger, receiving serious injuries to her back, waist and arms in the process, as well as a punctured lung. Her screams brought locals running and they chased the tiger away with sticks before rushing the young mother to hospital. Amazingly, her son had only minor injuries, and both are expected to make a full recovery.

No Kerosene, No Food - Sri Lankan Fishermen Crisis

The crippling fuel shortage in Sri Lanka has left many of the country’s fishermen unable to go to sea, forcing them to work odd jobs for half their previous salaries (as little as $0.70 a day) as national inflation sits 65% higher than last year. Kerosene supplies have resumed but with prices around four times higher than before as government subsidies have been slashed, despite power and energy minister Kanchana Wijesekera promising direct cash subsidies. For some the only option left is the black market, but with those prices reportedly 20 times higher than previously subsidized kerosene it is a pointless exercise.

India to Become Asia’s Fastest-Growing Economy - Morgan Stanley

A young workforce, business investment, and economy-boosting reforms are the main contributors to the projected growth - which will see the country add 28% and 22% to regional and global growth, according to experts. Service exports and domestic consumption are also expected to fuel the boom - which predictions say will see GDP grow 7% next year. “The economy is set for its best run in over a decade as pent-up demand is being unleashed,” the analysts said. New Delhi cut corporate tax rates and revived private investment - producing ‘healthy’ balance sheets and boosting business confidence.

Sri Lanka: no ‘IMF to the rescue’ for now

President Wickremesinghe says the Fund is holding back due to the unrest in the country - at least till end of August. He added that there was no point blaming his predecessor, urging parties to come together instead to help pull the bankrupt nation out of crisis. He also claimed that it was useless to pin hopes on other countries as these have signalled they won’t help either till the IMF deal is done.

Crisis-Stricken Sri Lanka Elects New President Ranil Wickremasinghe

Sri Lankan MPs have chosen six-time PM Ranil Wickremasinghe as president Wednesday in a 134 to 82 vote ballot against nearest candidate Dullas Alahapperuma. 73-year-old Wickremasinghe has led the negotiations with the IMF over a critical bailout package but remains deeply unpopular with voters; only a small handful of lawmakers declared their support for him publicly. Predecessor Gotabaya Rajapaksa had appointed Wickremasinghe as his PM in May before fleeing the country and resigning by email last week. MPs loyal to Rajapaksa have reportedly offered their backing to Wickremasinghe under assurances he will crack down hard on protestors who burned down their homes in May.

Sri Lanka FUEL CRISIS: Schools Shut, Public Sector Told to Work from Home

Sri Lankan military were forced to hand out tokens to people queuing for what little fuel is left on Monday, with schools in the capital Colombo shut and public sector workers asked to work from home to ease consumption. Some have waited in line for over 4 days, with no petrol left to even get home. Government stockpiles have dwindled to 9,000 tons of diesel and 6,000 tons of petrol with no new shipments, due to drained foreign currency reserves. An IMF team is visiting until Thursday to discuss a $3bn bailout program.

At least 25 dead and Millions stranded as floods devastate India and Bangladesh www.theguardian.com

At least 50 people have died as floods, triggered by heavy downpour, left millions of homes underwater across northeastern India and Bangladesh. Police in Bangladesh said on Saturday that monsoon rains have killed at least 25 people and unleashed devastating floods that left more than four million people stranded. At least 16 people have been killed in India’s remote Meghalaya, and at least another nine people have died from flooding in India’s Assam state. Meanwhile, the homes of two million people were submerged in floodwaters. Both countries have asked their respective militaries to help with the situation, which could worsen as rains are expected to continue over the weekend. Bangladesh, a nation of 160 million people, is low-lying and faces threats from climate crisis-related natural disasters such as floods and cyclones. According to the UN, about 17 percent of people in Bangladesh would need to be relocated over the next decade if global warming persists at the present rate. ![](https://lemmygrad.ml/pictrs/image/f3e5a459-edf5-4ece-9ac9-13563cd32f44.jpeg) ![](https://lemmygrad.ml/pictrs/image/8e188c70-f9ca-4ebd-991b-4dfec519be2c.jpeg) ![](https://lemmygrad.ml/pictrs/image/202d6663-b26e-42f0-858c-9ac3398a1374.jpeg) ![](https://lemmygrad.ml/pictrs/image/727be272-251b-452f-88bc-192978a15a02.jpeg) ![](https://lemmygrad.ml/pictrs/image/799539a5-aff2-46dc-af50-82fc4bd120aa.jpeg)

India will spend $30 billion to overhaul its tech industry and build up a chip supply chain

India will spend $30 billion to overhaul its tech industry and build up a chip supply chain to ensure it is not "held hostage" to foreign providers. The key aim of India's $30 billion initiative is to build a complete supply chain ecosystem. Around $10 billion of that sum will go toward two chip facilities and two display plants. About $7 billion is planned to be given to the electronics industry, including those manufacturing giants like Foxconn and fellow iPhone assembler Pegatron. The remaining $13 billion will be reserved for affiliated services like telecom, networking, solar photovoltaic, advanced chemistry and battery cells. -- Nikkei Asia

Debt-Laden Sri Lanka Eyes Discounted Russian Oil www.rt.com

Sri Lanka may start buying oil from Russia amid a critical fuel shortage and an unprecedented economic crisis, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said in an interview with the AP. According to Wickremesinghe, Sri Lanka would first look to other sources to get the much-needed fuel, for instance, to its major suppliers in the Middle East. “Certainly, we are looking at the Gulf as our main supply… If we can get [oil] from any other sources, we will get from there. Otherwise, we may have to go to Russia again,” he stated.

Because nothing screams "akhand bharat"^[1]^ more than making racist "memes" that divide the country. [1] Akhand Bharat means "Undivided India" it generally refers to the 1947 pre partition border which includes modern day Bangladesh, India and Pakistan all in one country as Akhand Bharat ~___~
