Just received my PineTime

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.zip/post/18591166 > Ordered a PineTime (and a Pinecil) direct on 6/26/2024, it shipped from China on 6/28 and I received it today 7/5. I'm on the west coast of the US and I'm really impressed with the shipping time. > > Charged it a bit, then updated to the current InfiniTime 1.14. > > Bootloader is still at 1.0.0, there hasn't been any updates for that, right? > > It also says to update the recovery firmware, but I don't see which version I'm currently on and couldn't find an updated version. > > Otherwise, it seems nice so far. I'm on Android and setting up with GadgetBridge wasn't difficult (since I knew to pair directly from GB and not using the phones BTW pairing).

finally got myself a pinetime https://feddit.de/pictrs/image/ed0a76db-7452-40dc-8f0a-2ab2af48a0e1.jpeg

Already connected it to gadgetbridge and updated to 1.14. Now I was wondering what the best way is to compile InfiniTime myself so that I can play around a bit myself. I already found [infinitweaks](https://github.com/toastom/infinitweaks) as well as well as [InfiniTime-Builder](https://github.com/ZephyrLabs/InfiniTime-Builder) but maybe I should try [the official documentation](https://docs.infinitime.io/en/latest/build-flash-and-debug/index.html) first?

InfiniTime 1.14 released github.com

Quick overview about the changes, more details found on Github (post link). > - Reduced memory footprint in flash memory: the analog watch face draws the background at runtime instead of using a pre-defined background picture and we moved the font for the navigation app to the external memory. > - Improved raise-to-wake algorithm and new lower-to-sleep functionality > - New weather service and new setting to select °C/°F > - The build system now allows to easily select which user applications and watch faces are built into the firmware > - Replace the node.js tool that convert the images (lv_img_conv) by a custom re-implementation in Python > - InfiniLink, the iOS companion app has a new maintainer! I will probably wait with the update for a week or two, as 1.13 came riddled with bugs. Edit: Ah, have to wait for the new Gadgetbridge update anyways. > Unfortunately there is a bug with v0.77.0 of Gadgetbridge on Android 14, that means that it can't update InfiniTime. We have submitted a fix, which will be available in the next release of Gadgetbridge. In the meantime, you can use another device to do the upgrade or use a nightly build of GadgetBridge (it's recommended to use the no pebble flavour, as that can be installed alongside your existing GadgetBridge app).

Favorite non-standard app

What's your favorite non-standard app? I'm still using the standard apps, but looking for other options. Can you recommend something?

Buying tip

This post is for you if you consider to buy a PineTime. The incredible low price of ~25 $ in the US makes buying new a viable choice. If you'd buy the watch based in the EU, VAT and shipping will be added onto the price, and the costs explode. The [EU shop](https://pine64eu.com/shop/) offers the watch for ~60 €, including VAT and shipping costs, and a way shorter shipping time. 60 € is a lot of money, compared to the 25 $ as the original price. My solution: Look on the second-hand market. There are **new** or barely used watches available, ranging from 20 to 30 €. The PineTime is something you don't necessarily need to buy new, as it is still in development and you should try it out first. Maybe you need to look a bit longer on the second-hand market, but as the PineTime is still kind-of in development, this isn't a bad thing. Every update makes it better!
