Which defensive midtfilder do you want now?

Liverpool probably need a more established defensive midfielder, in addition to Stefan Bajčetić, now that a couple of deals recently did not go through. What do you think would be a good signing considering quality, price and how the player would fit in the team?

[James Pearce] Liverpool's next transfer priorities: Midfield additions and young defender theathletic.com

Paywalled so pasted below: Before Liverpool had even unveiled Alexis Mac Allister as their first summer signing last week, the rumour mill had gone into overdrive about who would be next through the door. Nice’s Khephren Thuram? Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone? Gabri Veiga of Celta Vigo? Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch? Southampton’s Romeo Lavia? It’s no secret that Liverpool are in the market for at least one more midfielder to complement the arrival of 24-year-old Mac Allister. That department of Jurgen Klopp’s squad was an area of glaring weakness for most of last season and it’s been depleted by the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain following the end of their contracts. The signing of Mac Allister officially marked the end of Julian Ward’s time as sporting director with the handover to his successor Jorg Schmadtke complete. Over the past week, Schmadtke, head of recruitment Dave Fallows and chief scout Barry Hunter have been involved in discussions with clubs and agents across Europe. Where Liverpool turn next is currently unclear as they continue to weigh up their options. Mac Allister was the priority and since then it’s been a case of taking stock and establishing who else is available and at what price as they seek to maximise their resources. From Liverpool’s perspective, there is no rush given that the transfer window only officially opens for English clubs today and any signings from overseas won’t go through until the international window opens on July 1. Ideally, Klopp would like all business to be completed by July 8 when pre-season training starts at Kirkby, but there’s also a realisation on his part that things might drag on. The situation is complicated by international fixtures, including the Under-21 European Championship in Romania and Georgia which starts on June 21. The quintet mentioned above — Thuram, Kone, Veiga, Gravenberch and Lavia — have all come under consideration. However, that isn’t a definitive shortlist. One name who doesn’t feature on Liverpool’s shortlist is Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse, despite recent reports linking him with a move to Anfield. At the age of 28, he doesn’t fit the profile. Chelsea’s Mason Mount, 24, is also no longer an option with an asking price of £70million ($88m) to £80million deemed vastly excessive for the England international, who only has one year left on his contract. Manchester United remain his most likely destination. Twenty-two-year-old Thuram, the son of former France international Lilian and brother of Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram, is valued at around £50million by Nice and has attracted interest from a number of other Premier League clubs. Senior sources at Liverpool have dismissed speculation that they have already agreed personal terms with the player’s representatives. Celta Vigo’s Veiga, 21, would be a cheaper option given that he has a release clause of around £34million, while Lavia, 19, already has Premier League experience under his belt with Southampton. Positive discussions were held with 21-year-old Gravenberch’s camp but any hope of signing the Netherlands international hinges on Bayern Munich changing their stance with the Bundesliga champions having been adamant he’s not for sale. Whether Liverpool sign one or two more midfielders this summer will be heavily influenced by the cost of the deals available. The club’s stance isn’t that they must sign two more regardless in order to fill gaps. Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain only started seven league matches between them in 2022-23. Thiago is down to the final year of his contract but Klopp is planning for the season ahead with the former Bayern Munich playmaker on board. The expectation is he will leave on a free in the summer of 2024, when he will be 33. Liverpool will welcome back Stefan Bajcetic from injury in pre-season after the 18-year-old Spaniard missed the final two months of the campaign. It also helps that Curtis Jones made rapid strides forward during the 11-game unbeaten run which lifted morale after a season of struggle. Harvey Elliott is another expected to kick on again, and Tyler Morton will be assessed in pre-season following a productive year on loan at Blackburn Rovers. Fabinho finished the season strongly after fighting his way out of a slump and Klopp still views him as integral going forward. Fabio Carvalho is set to be loaned out after Liverpool turned down a bid that was deemed to be derisory from RB Leipzig. Academy graduate Leighton Clarkson is expected to leave on a permanent basis after a productive season on loan at Aberdeen. Midfield aside, Liverpool are also considering centre-back targets. Ibrahima Konate has firmly established himself as first choice alongside Virgil van Dijk but injuries have limited the France international to just 53 appearances across two seasons. Ideally, they would recruit a young, dynamic defender this summer who is capable of providing high-calibre back-up. Reports in Germany have linked Liverpool with Bayern’s Benjamin Pavard, who can play right-back and in the middle, but he’s 27 and not viewed as a potential option by recruitment staff. Like Thiago, the expectation is that Joel Matip will see out the final year of his contract rather than move on. It remains to be seen whether Klopp perseveres with Trent Alexander-Arnold in the hybrid role that re-energised him during the run-in, but either way, Liverpool are not looking to buy a right-back. Klopp intends to give opportunities in pre-season to teenager Conor Bradley, who will return to the club after an impressive loan spell at Bolton Wanderers. The Northern Ireland international says the time away toughened him up. Liverpool will no longer have Milner to provide cover but Joe Gomez can also operate at right-back. Calvin Ramsay, who was bought from Aberdeen as Alexander-Arnold’s understudy a year ago, will spend next season on loan at Preston North End as he looks to put an injury-ravaged 12 months behind him. The situation with goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, 24, remains unchanged. Liverpool insist they have received no offers for the Republic of Ireland international and want him to stay as Alisson’s understudy. It remains to be seen whether a top-flight club tests that resolve. Liverpool do not intend to add to their attacking options, despite the departure of Roberto Firmino, who scored 13 goals in all competitions in 2022-23. Cody Gakpo effectively filled the Brazilian’s boots, adjusting to the false-nine role with aplomb following his January arrival from PSV Eindhoven. Klopp has five frontline attackers in Gakpo, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. Reports in Italy have linked Liverpool with a £30million move for Juventus’ Federico Chiesa but that is not the case. Next season will bring the added complication of losing Salah in January for the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. However, there are high hopes for teenage winger Ben Doak, who is expected to play a bigger role after clocking up five senior appearances in 2022-23. Klopp also has gifted young attacker Kaide Gordon on the comeback trail, while Jota is another option on the right flank if required. There’s more business to be done as Liverpool seek further injections of quality in midfield and defence, but after acting swiftly and decisively to sign Mac Allister, patience will prove to be a virtue among an expectant fanbase as Klopp and Schmadtke consider their next move.
