LPT: Say "Complaint" to get through to customer service.

We've all been there. Something goes wrong, so you call customer service. What answers is a bizarre, arcane mess of an answering machine where you have to puzzle out exactly how company x categorizes customer issues when all you want is to talk to a human being. Saying "Complaint" cuts through all of that, but you might need to wait on hold for a bit. Just make sure you're nice to the person on the other end.

Use vegetable oil as a fire lighter.

A couple glugs of olive or sunflower oil into tissues or paper towels makes a great easy firelighter for wood burning stoves etc.

To save on chocolate prices: If you crave chocolate, you might be magnesium deficient. Take a magnesium supplement.

48% of Americans are magnesium deficient. From googling, the hard to absorb inorganic ones are magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride. The easy to absorb organic salts include magnesium citrate, lactate, aspartate, and glycinate. I also found when I eat eggs, I crave chocolate less. I think it's the fat content. (But I expect many just like the sugar.)

[LPT] Call and threaten to cancel your subscription services once a year; their retention department will give you a better rate

This only works by phone. Be nice, but firm. Don’t be satisfied with their first answer – make them escalate you to the retention department. They’re often authorised to give much larger discounts because it’s cheaper for them to retain customers than to recruit new ones.

LPT: Microwave your donuts for 15 to 20 seconds

Everyone loves the simple joy of a donut, but you're just not living life until you've had a hot donut. Edit: Change this up based on how many you're warming up and how strong your microwave is. It takes a little bit of getting to know the donuts from your local shop and your microwave and how they interact.

LPT: If you're ever in a conversation circle at a social function, keep an eye out for people trying to get in and get them up to speed

This feels like a common courtesy I don't see enough, particularly the second point. In a conversation circle, always try to keep your side vision open to people trying to find their way in. It can be awkward to try and find your own way in so giving them a spot tells them they're included then drop a quick brief on the conversation "We're talking about pineapples on pizza, good or bad" gives them context to jump in immediately.

LPT: A really cheap and effective way of getting rid of roaches, without even using poison...

Get a medium to large metal coffee can, or any old metal can I guess. Make sure it's cleaned out and dry to start with, and is *not* rusty. Then get some spray cooking oil and a few scraps of bread. Spray the inside of the can with cooking oil, then drop some bread scraps in there. Now you have a roach trap, set it near where the roaches are generally at their worst, and they'll crawl out of the walls and into the can to get their munch on, but won't be able to crawl back out. Check it every couple or few days or so, eventually the roaches will start piling up and most of them that have been in there for a bit will end up dying because they're covered in the cooking oil and apparently can't absorb oxygen. Take the trap as necessary and either dump it in the toilet and flush them away, or if you have access to a bonfire burn pile, bag the little demons up and burn them. Then clean the can out and reset the trap as necessary. Even with the worst infestations I've ever seen, this tends to eliminate over 99% of them within about two weeks, if not less. A few thoughts about the different approaches between my trap vs poison... If you poison them, then they just go back into your walls and die, further stinking the place up, is more dangerous to people and pets, and honestly isn't even nearly as effective as people would hope. But roaches are simple and stupid. They're really easy to trap, and why the hell would I want them going back into the walls in the first place? Especially when I can just flush them instead?

An affordable technique to repair peeling shoe soles..

This is my approach to fixing peeling shoe sole layers. I cleaned and even Dremeled the inside layers of rubber to help glue adhere, but I was like "How the hell should I apply pressure while glue dries?"... So I figured I should easily be able to do that with some thumb tacks in the sides of the sole, and temporarily stitch it down with dental floss for a day or two while the glue dries. Wish me luck, I used silicone glue. Not sure if that's the best glue or not for the purpose, but it's tough and flexible. Of course I did both shoes, just figured it would be more obvious what I did with one shoe showing the initial damage. Anyways, thumb tacks and dental floss for the win to hold it together while it dries! Edit: Confirmed, my fix is solid, even holding better than the original factory glue! Haters gonna be haters though, carry on with your downvotes if you want. Just sharing my technique of salvaging shoes for less than $5 of glue and stuff around the house.

Don't leave your phone in the sun

Don't leave your phone in the sun. Aside from the devastating heat, it'll also burn your camera out just like it will your eyes.

LPT: Reduce or increase friction to accomplish goals or to help establish habits

Don't depend on willpower. Lower (or increase) friction. If you have trouble with not eating cookies, increase friction by keeping them out of sight, or just don't keep them in the house. If you have trouble getting to the gym, reduce friction by getting everything ready the night before - put coffee or your workout drink in an insulated flask, have your gym clothes out (or sleep in them), etc. If you have trouble waking up in the morning, increase friction (for staying in bed) by moving your alarm clock to the other side of the room.

Life Without Goals

If you search on a search engine for "no goals" or "life without goals" you get some sites that emphasize the importance of setting and achieving goals, but there are some other voices who say that setting goals is often an issue for them, so they try to live without goals. Some of the problems they indicate are that goals often end up being achieved differently or on a different schedule, so it seems pointless to set goals, or they can get things done without making it in to a "goal". I was curious if you've seen this philosophy and experimented with it: what are your opinions on "living without goals"?

[LPT] If you’re laundering a thick comforter and want it to dry quickly, add a 100% wool throw with it in the dryer

Real sheep’s wool is a moisture wick. Your comforter will dry in one cycle. Your wool throw will still be damp, but read wool doesn’t mildew like down or synthetics do.

LPT: If a device is telling you to install an app, try using it without the app first. You may avoid giving your personal data over to a random company.

Bought a UE Boom 3 for my partner, and it demanded we download the app and connect to WiFi in order to use it. We did not obey the machine, and now the machine obeys us. (It works fine with no app or internet, because why the hell should a Bluetooth speaker need an app or internet to work). Unfortunately not going to be applicable to everything, but thought I’d throw this out there. If at least one person can avoid installing an unnecessary app to use something they’ve already paid for, then I’m happy.
