Geographic location, defederation and word filter policies

In the interests of transparency around how this instance is intended to be run, and so that prospective users can make an informed decision before joining, this post will serve as a living document briefly outlining policies and information about Leminal Space. #### Geographic location The server resides in a data centre on the US east coast. This was chosen because it is intended for this instance be a general, international one, and the fact that most countries have a relatively fast and fat pipe connecting them to the US made this a practical choice. That said, cached content will be served to you via the nearest global Cloudflare server. #### Defederation policy We will actively and pre-emptively defederate from predominantly fascist, far-right and alt-right (or troll) instances. To reduce the likelihood of legal issues, we do not federate with porn/NFSW instances and suggest you use an alt-account if you wish to interact with those. We do not and will not federate with Threads or any other Meta entity. Either leave a comment below or post a thread to [/c/leminalspacemeta](https://leminal.space/c/leminalspacemeta) if there is an instance you believe should be considered for defederation in line with the above policy. We will remain federated with all leftist instances (yes, even the sh*tposting ones). #### Word filter policy We do not implement any word filters.

Updated to Lemmy 0.19.5

EDIT: Update complete. Service will be interrupted from 0:00 UTC (~1 hour from now) due to updates to both Lemmy and the database version. This is a major update and downtime could be up to to two hours (but hopefully less). As ever, you can refer to [status.leminal.space](https://status.leminal.space) if we're down to see if it's planned and what the reason is. I’ll comment here once the updates are complete.

New web front-end: Tesseract (Photon fork) https://tes.leminal.space/

The featureful Photon fork Tesseract is now available to use at [tes.leminal.space](https://tes.leminal.space). It has significantly advanced upon Photon's already excellent interface and really come into its own. As such, the list of features is extensive, so I encourage you to check out the [repo](https://github.com/asimons04/tesseract) for a full description if you're interested. Tesseract also works well on mobile, especially when installed as a PWA, so give that a try, too. If all goes well, it's likely Photon will be retired in the next couple of weeks with Tesseract taking its place. (EDIT: This has now been implemented.) ![Tesseract screenshot](https://leminal.space/pictrs/image/631c3166-23e0-459a-96d7-a6d1acceb08f.jpeg)

Comments missing from posts

We had an issue over the past 24 hours or so that stopped incoming federated comments from making it to the database (you may have noticed highly-upvoted posts with 0 comments). This has now been resolved and comments are being received again. This issue should not have impacted outgoing comments reaching other instances.

New web front-end: Photon https://photon.leminal.space/

[Photon](https://github.com/Xyphyn/photon) is now available as an alternative web front-end at [photon.leminal.space](https://photon.leminal.space) - link also in the sidebar.

Image service degraded

The image service is currently degraded while a database migration completes. It may be hit-or-miss whether images appear, but should be 100% within an hour or so.

Scheduled outage 2024-01-13 @ 6:00 UTC

Service may be interrupted from 6:00 UTC (~7 hours from now) due to planned updates to both the Lemmy and image service back-ends. As this is a major update for both, with each requiring database refactoring, anticipated downtime is up to two hours (but hopefully less). If Lemmy is still up during the above period but you notice images aren’t being served or uploads are failing, it is be due to the image service being down for the update. I'll comment here once the updates are complete.

Scheduled outage 2023-09-26 @ 3:00 UTC

The site will go down at roughly 3:00 UTC today (~4.5 hours from now) for a server upgrade. Downtime should last less than five minutes.

New status page, 0.18.3 update

The Lemmy base was updated to 0.18.3 on the weekend with just a couple of minutes of downtime. This version includes database efficiencies that reduced this instance's total database size by about 60%, as well as federation efficiencies that reduce CPU overhead. A big thanks to the development team for this significant update. In other news, a Leminal Space status page has been created at [status.leminal.space](https://status.leminal.space) to show service advisories and keep track of outages. This is hosted on an external server and should work regardless of the status of the main LS server.

Alternative front-ends added

In a blatantly obvious effort to [keep up with the Joneses](https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/keep+up+with+the+Joneses), I have decided to follow the lead of some of the larger instances and host the two alternative front-ends that you may use to browse Lemmy. I intend to keep these updated as the projects evolve and will monitor their use for detrimental impacts to performance. The first is [Alexandrite](https://github.com/sheodox/alexandrite), a free and open source project by sheodox released under the AGPL license. A pretty and highly reactive UI designed for desktop use, it features infinite scrolling and viewing posts in a pop up so you never lose your place. This UI lives at [alex.leminal.space](https://alex.leminal.space) The second is [mlmym](https://github.com/rystaf/mlmym), a recreation of the "old" Reddit UI for Lemmy (for those pining for the beforetimes). This project is also FOSS and released under the AGPL license. Try it at [old.leminal.space](https://old.leminal.space) If there is demand for it, I will consider adding [Voyager](https://vger.app) at *m.leminal.space* with an automatic redirect for mobile devices. However, I believe that the default Lemmy front-end works well enough on mobile browsers for the few who will be using the site without a dedicated app.
