Nuclear Resistance Movements in India https://doi.org/10.18452/24187

The paper illustrates dynamics of nuclear resistance movements in India and how people’s power rises in response to subversion of justice and suppression of human rights. The need for democratising nuclear policyruns implicit through the demands of the people protesting against nuclear programs. The paper analyses the rationale behind developing nuclear energy according to the mainstream development model adopted by the state. Whether the prevalent nuclear discourse includes people’s ambitions and addresses local concerns or not is discussed by focusing on the nuclear resistance movements at five sites in India— Koodankulam (Tamil Nadu), Jaitapur (Maharashtra), Haripur (West Bengal), Mithivirdi (Gujrat) and Gorakhpur (Haryana).

Security breach in Parliament as two persons jump into Lok Sabha from public gallery https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/parliament-sees-security-breach-as-two-persons-jump-into-lok-sabha-from-public-gallery/article67633757.ece

The Lok Sabha witnessed shocking scenes on December 13 when two persons jumped into the House from the public gallery, carrying what appeared to be tear gas canisters. As soon as the duo entered the House during the Zero Hour, one of them was seen leaping over the benches while the other dangled from the public gallery, spraying some kind of tear gas substance. This led to chaos and confusion inside the House. Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the two persons were carrying tear gas canisters. He described it as a “serious breach of security” on the 21st anniversary of the Parliament attack. Sources said one of the persons was named Sagar Sharma, and that the pass was reportedly sponsored by BJP MP from Mysore Pratap Simha. Some eye-witnesses said there were two more protesters who remained in the gallery.

Facing pressure in India, Netflix and Amazon back down on daring films https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/11/20/india-netflix-amazon-movies-self-censorship/

'Today, a culture of self-censorship pervades the streaming industry here, manifesting in ways both dramatic and subtle. Executives at the India offices of Netflix and Prime Video and their lawyers ask for extensive changes to rework political plots and remove passing references to religion that might offend the Hindu right wing or the BJP, industry insiders say. Projects that deal with India’s political, religious or caste divisions are politely declined when they are proposed, or dropped midway through development. Even completed series and films have been quietly abandoned and withheld by Netflix and Prime Video from their more than 400 million combined viewers worldwide.'
