Here's how the app keeps you safe: - Decentralized authentication: No central server is required for login, making it harder for anyone to gain unauthorized access. - Unique IDs: Your ID is cryptographically random, adding an extra layer of security. - End-to-end encryption: Your messages are encrypted from your device to the recipient's device, ensuring only you and the recipient can read them. - Local data storage: Your data is stored only on your device, not on any external servers. - Self-hostable: You have the option to host the app on your own server if you prefer. A decentralized infrastructure has many unique challenges and this is a unique approach. Ive taken previous feedback and made updates. Here's what I've found: - [Iroh](https://iroh.computer) - early days alternative to IPFS promising improved performance and application control - [Appleseed](https://github.com/cblgh/appleseed-metric) - old-ish proposal for a distributed trust system - I'm thinking of using it for moderation (i.e. if you block/report similarly to someone else, that will get automated; you could also explicitly trust someone else [e.g. a CP-detector bot]) - [TrustNet](https://github.com/cblgh/trustnet) - builds on Appleseed - still reading through the paper to know what it adds over Appleseed, if anything Goals: - distributed storage - worried the fediverse will scale poorly (become too expensive) - distributed moderation - power-hungry mods suck - local-first - cache/host stuff you care about, reserve some space for preservation Non-goals: - make money - it's a hobby for now, everything would be FOSS - image/video hosting - legal issues if you get random CP or something - preserve all data - I'd rather sacrifice older/less popular content than lose users - community can run caching servers - fediverse compat - P2P makes that difficult, but a bridge should be feasible Thoughts? I only see posts dating up to Sep '21 and nothing more. I've cleared my profile, reinstalled a new profile, etc, but still Sep '21. I also noticed neither the blog, the community nor their Twitter account shows anything past Sep '21. Now I'm starting to think maybe it's not me.... But how does a P2P network just stop working, if so?
Hey, I just discovered [manyverse](https://manyver.se). It looks interesting but I kind of understand why I had not heard of it even though it seems to have been around for a while now...It looks like it's a little bit complicated to discover and follow people, I know it's a common issue for decentralized tools but with this one it's even harder since it only works with invites (correct me if I'm wrong). Have you heard about it? What do you think of it? Apparently the best way to discover people is to join a room server but again, I need an invite for that. Can one of you guys invite me to a room server please?

Friendica is a decentralized open-source social network which federates with many other social networks including diaspora*, Hubzilla, and the Fediverse of social networks. It can mirror too with Twitter and IFTTT, or export posts to Discourse, libertree, Tumblr, Wordpress and e-mail. It is a good candidate for being an alternative to Facebook, and you can either join a public server, or self-host your own instance. In this video I give an overview of Friendica's functionality and features, a comparison with Hubzilla, a look at it's interface, and a tour through the settings menu. We are all in love with decentralized social topology, aren't we. But to make society reasonably decentralized, we need to remodel more than one level of it. I would like to bounce around some thoughts that may help establish a multilayer model of decentralized society. ::: Longwinded 1. Assumptions. 1.1. I use communications as an example of social activity that is a key to all other processes. 1.2. I assume that a decentralized network of heterogeneous communities is a good model for human society that we need now, as the all-crisis unfolds and neither democracy nor (even less) capitalism can offer any constructive approach. 1.3. I assume that the **minimal** provisions for an individual must include the right to participate in more than one community at the same time, the right to opt-out peacefully at any moment and the right to form a community (and participate in the network) on an equal basis. 2. Layers 2.1. "Fediverse". What we now see as fediverse is an implementation of communications pattern, where instances of various services can be associated with specific communities and their local users considered community members. Federation protocol provides a routine way to regulate interactions with other communities. 2.2. "Community Intranet". To control their collective memory, their policies/rituals and their boundaries, communities need to have control over the physical infrastructure of their "village intranet". It applies mostly to "natural" (local) communities, while "virtual" ones may need a trusted and neutral virtual hosting environment. The control should not, however, influence individual participation in remote communities. 2.3. "NetCommons". To keep the information flowing, society needs a non-owned, collectively managed transmission backbone. We can draw analogies with watershed management that is a known example of advantages and shortages of the commons approach. 2.4. "Platform Cooperatives". Economic (and, effectively, political) control of the means of production is a key to stability of the ecosystem. Thus, decentralized ecosystem of user cooperatives provides cohesion to the whole multilayered model. Every user becomes a member of the co-op(s) operating their community(ies) infrastructure. Community co-ops then form the "NetCoooperative", managing and maintaining the backbone systems and providing support, R&D and exception handling to communities in need. 3. Essential question is, whether such a model is comprehensive and complete enough to provide scaffolding for an attempt to implement proof-of-concept project. Questions and comments welcome. :::
